Does anyone follow a gluten free diet?

My friend, who has Lupus, wrote me this morning that she is following a gluten -free diet and is feeling much better.

She said that she "knows" when she accidently gets something w/ gluten because she hurts alot .

I'm considering trying this and wonder if anyone has applied this to our disease and what your concensus is.

Thanks!!
Babs, I have heard from many people that going gluten free has improved their overall feeling and I have considered doing this many times. If you are interested, I have a few really good recipes, a flourless chocolate cake, and a really good pie crust recipe plus some others. To me, I don't think it would be hard as I love corn and I can deal with some of the weird flours you have to use, but it is a bit spendy to eat like this as my soon to be ex son in law was celiac and I would bake for him when he visited and the flours are expensive. Good luck and if you would like my recipes, let me know. Also, the pamelas brand of gluten free mixes are fantastic. The brownies and chocolate cakes are excellent. Hey, Babs...this may possibly be helpful. This young woman was on here for a while maybe 18 months ago. She had used gluten free and other dietary changes to help her RA and it also helped her young son who was dxed with Autism.

This is her blog which is quite comprehensive and may answer some of your questions. I think you can email her through the blog also. I can't do actual links on here but I'll write the address and you may have to cut and paste the link in. Sorry.

Hope you get some useful ideas from it.
wow..  thanks Cordy!

I am seriously considering this... though I realize it is a HUGE undertaking..

someone assure me that Diet Pepsi won't be taken off my diet and I'll be able to survive this!!  Hey Babs, thats funny because I have been looking into it also I think I saw it on one of the shows some actress or something talking about it also some people with stomach issues use it to control their symptoms. I know that when my son was young I put him on a no perservatives  no food coloring and he did much better with his behavior. He could eat red food coloring stuff and he turned into a monster. Who knows what they are filling our foods with nowadays. Its hard to eat healthy. But considering giving this a try. Lauraoh Laura!  I would have someone to commiserate with!!??

I am going to stop at Borders Books on my way home and see waht's available.. I see a Gluten Free for Dummies... That sounds like me!

Well,

I want a drug that allows me to continue with one of the very delicious parts of life. Eating what makes me and my taste buds smile. So far with the retuxin, I can eat just about anything and not have any pain. And hopefully the drug allows me to be active enough to burn off the fat and calories and then if I get fat then I deserve it. I believe everyone should try what ever they want for relief. For me, being able to eat whatever I want is relief, but wish those that alter their habits good luck with that.

LEV
oh I get that, lev......  I so get it.

with enbrel I can't eat whatever I want... I already follow restrictions on my diet that I am unhappy about... I LOVE sausages and soft cheeses and I can't have them due to listeria fears......

"IF" and I know the chances are low that I can help myself with this diet... and eliminate some meds?  I have to at least give it the old try....

Babs, I have looked into the gluten free diets as well.  Not so much for the pain issues, but because I have noticed when I eat items with wheat, I have excess bloating and abdominal cramps.  I really did not tie it to wheat until last fall when I got pneumonia, even though I had a slight sensitivity to wheat when tested for allergies.  I was so ill, I was not eating much of anything.  I had a craving for yeast bread and with in one hour of eating it, I had the above symptoms.  I just avoid wheat now and look for gluten in the label and I can tell a difference in how my abdominal symptoms go.  I really can not say it has helped RA wise, though I certainly do not feel it has hurt - a good, healthy diet always helps.

If you are looking to go gluten free, do be wary of corn too.  My allergist said corn is a very common cause of allergies and can cause the same gastric disturbances if you are the least bit sensitive.  I found the following web site helpful as a quick reference to what you could eat and what you can not;  http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/UVAHealth/adult_allergy/wheat.cfm
There is a really good sliced bread - Ezekiel bread - that is commonly available in the frozen food section of the grocery store.

Home made bread and pizza is my kryptonite!  I still indulge occasionally, I guess I should just break down and try the gluten free mixes!

Lev, you are so lucky to have found the drug that works for you!  I am really happy for you and your taste buds!  Have a slice of warm bread with a pat of butter for me, will ya?

It is worth looking into, Babs.  I think I have found some measure of relief just by cutting out preservatives and wonder where I would be if I had not... but that is another thread!  Good luck!
So far Waddie,

I love bread and real butter. Even if I have a hard salami and american cheese sandwich or a ham and american cheese sandwich I use butter as a dressing, oooh, so good.

LEV
I love ezekiel bread!!  I have the flour to make it myself......  good thing.. forgot about that.  Hard salami and american cheese!  I am drooling now!  You have created a craving where there was a vague thought! pfffft.. I can't have salami anyway..........

listeria fears!!!  OMG!!

I may as well be relegated to eating rabbit food and drinking only water      I LOVE Brie and Camembert!  But the list does not stop there!  UGH!  IDK if I should thank-you or not for this heads up!  (I won't shoot the messenger!)  Did we discuss probiotics and these drugs?  Any worries there? IDK,.... I eat good natural yogurt every day....  probiotic.
IF You're going to have a hot dog or sausage...it must be STEAMING hot when you eat it... where's the fun in that?  burn your mouth?
Well,

while I can completely agree with your perspective,Cordy and lev......
I think watching my diet is an easy thing!  and if it makes a good difference, it's even better.

but, I think I'm a fool if I do not at least give this a try...

Yeah..I'll miss all my goodies and sweets .....but guess what? I don't need them to lead a good life...   Food is a little diversion to what's really important to me...... my family..... and living a good long life.... and if making a dietary change is going to help me do that and do it in a way with quality of life .. to be around longer to enjoy my family...... It is such a small price to pay...

so, while I do understand your perspectives, this is mine.
Babs,

I follow a Mediterranean based diet plan.  I do so because I like the foods that I can eat on it and because it's heart healthy.  Diet has never affected my RA.  I was a vegeterain when I was diagnosed and for a couple years after.

I hope going gluten free helps you feel better

thanks,Lynn!!

I'm remembering in the 90's when I tried the Atkins diet...... well, let me tell you, I felt like a million bucks on that diet!!  Honestly! (It's carb restricting if you are unaware)

gluten free is just a little bit more control of carbs by restricting gluten....

I like mediteranean foods anyway!!  I may just do that, Lynn!!

I could absolutely never give up my artisan bread oh I make a mean artisan bread myself.....

see..I love it too....... but I love feeling great more.....

Im not saying that  you don't.... YOU are in remission!!  wooohoo!!

but I need to feel better.....  and I'll try anything once. ;)
I know people who do.I agree with you Babs, cutting the bad for me things out of my diet has been a true non issue.  I much prefer being proactive in what ever way I can... if it makes one joint on my little toe feel better then it is worth it to me!  In my case, I know preservatives were contributing to my rashes and I know wheat causes a negative reaction.  I can still eat those things, but why would I wish to?  If I choose to do so, it is an occasional indulgence for me.

I don't deprive myself by any stretch of the imagination.  I will still enjoy the occasional slice of a birthday cake or a glass of wine (and probably that bit of camembert!).  There is a huge difference in the pleasure of occasional indulgence and living with that cake in the house!

The Mediteranean diet Lynn follows should be called "lifestyle" rather than diet, as diet implies deprivation.  I am pretty sure Lynn does not feel deprived.  That is the way I think of my dietary changes and I don't just view that way of thinking as a matter of semantics.

Lev's sandwich still sounds good to me and I may still have one!
I know people who do.
You know people who do what?  Give up bread, eat healthy, are vegeterians....I guess I"m having a difficult time following your train of thought here
You are correct waddie, it is a lifestyle as opposed to a diet

I know people who do.

I know people who do.
I often wonder what Jan's train of thought is.....

I don't think I'll be terribly deprived.. I was reading some of  the things I can eat....and mexican food is #1 since alot of the "breads" are corn!!  wooot!  Love me some corn tortillas ...meat... lettuce tomato...  you can have potato chips...  My middle son's girlfriend must follow gluten free (except when she's on prednisone for her allergies/asthma) and she said there's a wonderful bakery she'll take me to that is ALL gluten free..

I really don't see alot of loss here.

Lynn... You're "there" darlin... You're in remission....... I'm not.. it's easy to see why I am willing and you aren't.. you already have what I"m striving for.... you don't need to do this..
well.. I had no idea that my little revelation would take this course.....

First, let me assure you that I am not someone who believes I need to squeeze into teener clothes and dress like them to be happy and /or healthy..... not at all.

Nor, would I ever suggest that someone else do what Im doing......  never.  I posted because I thought that maybe someone had tried it.. found it helpful or not.. and could or would give me some suggestions.....

in no way shape nor form am I trying to get someone on my band wagon... influence any of you in any manner or wayl.......

It's just something I may try based on my Lupus friend's recommendation......... nothing more.. nothing less.

IF it gets me to where I feel better...... YAY!!  if  not... I'll stop....... simple as that.

Hope everyone understands where I am coming from a little better.
I am gluten free and have been for the past 5 years or so. i dont do it for my joints though. I have celiac disease, so i must be gluten free....otherwise i get to deal with incredible stomach pain, diarrhea..all that stuff even with being gluten free my stomach isnt 100%. so i vote for gluten free IF it helps, i think its a fad lately, everyone says how good it is, but really you can eat healthier without being gluten free, cut out bread fine, but a little flour mixed into your soup to thicken it isnt gonna kill you...you would be suprised how many things have gluten in them! Babs, love, I sure did not mean don't give this a go, especially if your instincts are screaming loudly that it's worth a try. Absolutely, go for it sweetie. I think a diet change like that needs to come deep within you and you listening to your own voice about what you need.

I just like to remind people that pleasure in life is a good thing and I do think many people punish themselves with, like I said, many different things in life.

I don't think you are doing that here but I find it an interesting idea to discuss.

For me, with it being difficult for me to even get enough food into me, my few food pleasures I am not prepared to relinquish at this point.

SnowOwl, is right...there are tons of Food Nazi's out there and we can also Food Nazi ourselves.

I hope, Babs, you glean so great information to help you get things started for you.

Oh, and Gluten Free For Dummies, sounds like a great place to start.

So go for it woman
. Oh Babs, I don't think trying a gluten free diet is a bad thing for you and really, I'm not judging...Especially since I'm sitting here eating what's left over from making rice krispie treats

Can we say...extra time on the treadmill tomorrow I quickly ran to PM SnowOwl that I hoped I didn't offend her and she had sent the same to me!!
Please don't go, Snow... no need to leave..

and as I said in PM... who has the right to tell someone ....a stranger! about what's in their grocery basket!!  shame!

no worries darlin'....no worries at all
Thanks, Cordy and SnowOwl andLynn49 who PMd me too...please know I am fine w/the thread drifting.......I think  that's how conversations grow.....drifting from one thing  to the next...I am so okay with that...
I am also okay w/ you discussing your own observations and opinions.......

I wasn't okay with you guys thinking I was saying "this is a cure" "do this"  or that I wanted everyone to do this.

I didn't...I don't...but, I will let you all know if it works for me at all...  thats  a promise.

It seems... very unlike this board lately, we were all just concerned about each others' feelings... which I think is so very cool and just lets us all know that we have some really great members on here..... despite recent behaviors of some... and that those members who really care... who are strong opinionators and influence this board positively should make themselves heard..........ALOT.

Off my soapbox........

thanks,friends

Babs,
I'm curious too. I've been learning just this week that the symptoms of wheat intolerance can be similar to RA. Could be denial but being seroneg and once upon a time taking a year to figure out I was lactose intolerant, makes me wonder if I shouldn't explore this as well.

Mo
I am curious how your gluten free diet is going.  Are you having reduced RA symptoms?   Have you had blood work done by your physician that shows declines in your numbers?
Thanks
