Hydroxychloroquine use for pregnant women with AI | Arthritis Information
Sperber K et al. – Study provides evidence that hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) is not associated with any increased risk of congenital defects, spontaneous abortions, fetal death, pre-maturity and decreased numbers of live births in patients with auto-immune diseases.
Methods
- Study to compare:
- Incidence of congenital defects
- Spontaneous abortions
- Number of live births
- Fetal death and pre-maturity
in women with autoimmune diseases taking HCQ during pregnancy
- MEDLINE, Cochrane data base, Ovid-Currents Clinical Medicine, Ovid-Embase:Drugs and Pharmacology, EBSCO, Web of Science, and SCOPUS literature searches
- All clinical trials identified from 1980 to 2007 regardless of language or publication status
- Cochrane Central Library and www.Clinical trials.gov were also searched
Results
- Odds ratio (OR) of the following events in women taking HCQ during pregnancy were:
- Congenital defects in live births: 0.66
- Live birth: 1.05
- Spontaneous abortion: 0.92
- Fetal deaths: 0.97
- Pre-mature birth defined as birth before 37 wks: 1.10
