I just started methotrexate about a month ago and am experiencing mouth and lip sores......I'm having a wrist fusion this week.  1.  has anyone else exp. mouth sores on mtx and what was done about them. and 2.  would this postphone the surgery?  thanks for your input!  trish

Hi Trish

Did the doctor tell you to take 1 mg of folic acid along with the mtx?  If not, you need to.  Folic acid helps reduce the side affects of mtx which includes mouth sores.  If you are take 1 mg, then you probably need to increase it.  Good luck!

I believe you also should drink a lot of water. You should ask you doctor about that. Sorry, about the mouth sores.
Hope it subsides.

I've gotten mouth sores since I was a young child....but also have them occationally now, MAYBE due to MTX. So horrible. Just getting over one in the back of my mouth now. OUCH. I've struggled with fever blister type sores on the outside of my lips for so long and they are very painful. Haven't found anything that helps much.

Someone recommended using equal parts of malox and benadril (Spelled wrong; sorry) and rinsing with that like mouth wash. Sounds gross but if this last one I had hadn't cleared up when it did I would have tried about anything.

Good Luck.

Hi Trish

When I was using Methotrexate I had mouth sores and they where not pleasant....the RA doctor upped my folic acid to 3mg a day to see if it would help to stop the mouth sores, it didn't, so she put me on Leucovorin.  That did the trick.  Might be something you may want to look into.  Also, when I had chemo, I had mouth sores with that too and the oncologist prescribed a mouth wash for me to use, which helped quite a bit.  you might want to ask your doctor about that too.   Now...for the question about the mouth sores and having surgery.  My first thought is that it might, because they may be putting you under general anesthesia, which could compromise your immune system even more and may cause them to get infected. I definitely would ask your doctor about that.

I hope all goes well with your surgery and you can soon find some relief with the mouth sores.

BASI BALTIMORE has an IRB approved Clinical Research trial paying Up to 50.00 respond ASAP.is this study baltimore is that just the name?? and what is IRB?? sorry to sound so duhhhh. That post is scattered all through the boards.  Seems to be a scam.  Found this company's website, but no info on this so-called study.  I'd say ignore them.I've been on MTX for a year... my Dr. has me on 5mg of Folic Acid... I"m curious as to why some of you are only on 1-3mg...?? When mouth sores appear, I use Orabase... it's a paste to cover the sore and seems to help it heal and not hurt so much...

I only knew about folic Acid when i joined this site my doctor never put me on it so i asked my GP. So she put me on 5 mg. I did not no about mouth sores only what i have read here witch am greatful for. From the people of this site. Thank you to all smurfette. ps hope they get better soon.x

I've been on Mtx since last July and the only time I get mouth sores is when I'm under a lot of stress, like now. I take 1mg of folic acid, per day except on the day that I take my Mtx. Plus I make sure that I take my silver Centrum too. I try to keep on a very healthy diet that contains low fat, lots of fiber, and little red meat.
When I do get the mouth sores, I make sure that I keep my mouth and teeth very clean and use a mouth wash solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide. This seems to help.
Still trying to work on getting rid of the stress.

Marisa Sue i have taken MTX for 10 years now and never had mouth sores. i had some tummie issues. i'm good now. sorry about your mouth sores i'm they make you miserable.
