Association Between RA and Poor Sleep in Women | Arthritis Information

According to a research abstract that will be presented on Wednesday, June 10, at SLEEP 2009, the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) negatively affect women's sleep. Sleep is further impaired by pain, depression and poor adherence to RA medications.

Results indicate that length of time since RA diagnosis, RA disease activity, level of pain, depression symptoms and adherence to medications for RA may cause women suffering from the disease to have poor sleep quality.

According to lead author Faith Luyster, PhD, of the University of Pittsburgh, Pa., findings emphasize the need for further research concerning poor RA medication adherence and sleep quality.

"Treating depression in women with RA may not only improve sleep but may also improve pain and adherence to medications," said Luyster.

Bumping for all the sleepless newbies

I can go weeks and sleep all night, never wake up, easy to fall asleep and then boom....I wake up every couple of hours and can't fall back to sleep.  Pain level hasn't changed, meds are the same.  I'm blaming it on old age, that's as easy to blame as RA!  Right now my sleep is interrupted by bilateral hip bursitis, miserable.  Worse pain than any of my joints.  OMG, I sound like my grandmother....please, someone make me shutup!!!!!  Lindy

Well I guess this would make sense !  If your in pain or just a little uncompfort.....sleep would be interrupted!  I have tried a lot of sleep aides myself!!!!  Finally came to a natural product (woo hoo!) and it is specifically for not stimulating sleep but helping you stay asleep all night which is what my problem was...just staying asleep and not randomly waking up!  This does help and when you look on the bottle it says chamomile!!!!! A herb I know and trust anyway....but I always resulted to Excedrine PM to "knock out" but was groggy.  Sleep Tite from .....www.todayinwellness.com....... really helps with not feeling groggy too since i get up at  5 am every morning!!! Very important to me!  Th esite has a huge list of product and I believ many are geared toward natural approaches to arthritis  (etc) so check it  out!!! If you need to try before you buy...I have loads of it since I am on automatic shippment!!!  I would love to give you some hhaha!  That is only if you feel okay getting something form someone through the mail!...let me know!  It has chnaged things for me and my LIFE!!!!
