Root Canal, antibiotics and Mtx... | Arthritis Information

I'll be having a root canal in 2 weeks and was told to ask my RD if she thought I should have antibiotics prior to the procedure.  She said "it wouldn't hurt".  So I picked up my antibiotics from the pharmacy and was surprised to learn I'm to take 4 - 500mg capsules of amoxicillin one hour before my appointment.  Just seems like a lot to me.  Has anyone here had any experience with this?

I guess the reason I'm questioning this is because I've read a few articles that advise avoiding antibiotics while on mtx.  I have taken antibiotics before while on mtx....just not that amount at one time.
Is it four at once, right before the procedure? Or one capsule four times per day? Either one would be okay.

Sometimes, for dental procedures, a loading dose of an antibiotic will be prescribed. I wouldn't worry about either one of the scenarios I presented here. (Of course, you can  always call the endo doc if you're concerned.)

The thing that I would worry about, however, is getting a yeast infection. You might request a single dose of diflucan to be prescribed (which you can start taking on the first day of tx). My doctor told me to stop my MTX when I took a course of antibiotics. Yet I talked to him tonight about having a ginigival flap surgery which would include putting antibiotic inside the flap and possibly a course of antibiotics to prevent infection and he said well you could stop your MTX for a week before and a week after. When I complained I was afraid of a flare he said well you don't have to.
Your dose does sound high-
Kelstev,
I have heard of that...good luck with your upcoming dental work.

Kelstev, I always take a loading dose before dental work  due to cardiac issues.  If you have an infection or they suspect one, then antibiotics will be prescribed.  In that case MXT is stopped until antibiotics are finished/infection cleared.  I just went through 4 months of antibiotics, root canal, a persistent gum abcess and finally a tooth extraction and I was off all meds for 4 months.  Call your RD back and ask about MXT.  Sorry you have to go through this.  LindyKim H..yes, I am to take all 4 before the appointment.
wtb...good luck with your procedure!
Thanks, Kim, wtb, Phatgirl2 and Lin!
I think I'll go off of the mtx for a week or two.
Thanks Kel- I wish you a lot of luck with yours too!For what its worth, I have long had to have a loading dose of abx and in the manner (and dose) you describe prior to any dental work.  I think this is very common.  I didn't go off MTX for that, only for an active infection.  I never had an adverse reaction from doing the loading dose thing.

I hope your days are full of smiles, Kel, and you have an easy time of it!

Thanks so much, Waddie!  Maybe I'll just keep taking the mtx then..I really hate the idea of going off of it for any length of time since I've been in a bad flare this past week.I am sorry to hear you are flaring!  Do you take and NSAIDS?  I don't because of GERD and heart issues, but they do help.  I hope you have things under control soon and feel better!

Thanks, Waddie...I take celebrex. I've been taking oxycocet and have my fentanyl patch on but I just seem to hurt everywhere..
It'll get better soon though..it always does...eventually :)

Last year, I had a tissue graft, bone graft, and dental implant and I didn't have to stop my MTX for any of those procedures.  I also wasn't instructed to predose with antibiotics, though that sounds like a good idea.
