what do u think is worse?

the disease itself
or the side effects of the drugs used to make u feel better

i thought prednisone's side effects were pretty nasty
but ever since the doctor lowered the dose monday
the disease seems worse

so if i dont want the bad side effects
i guess i have to suffer with the pain
lol

and im even takin methotrexate too
but it doesnt seem to help
today was the day i take it every week
maybe i'll feel better tommorow
i hope...
how long have you been taking mtx?
um im gonna guess
that i started sometime in late May
of course the doctor sayd i probably wouldnt see any effects from it for a few months
like 6 or 7 months
so i guess until then i have to suffer lol
yeah..it takes a while to start working...
disease is the worse....yeah  it seems like it could take forever loland if it doesn't work even after a while, maybe you might have to have it increased....but, just give it time.
It's really worked well for me.  Hope it does the same for u.
i hope it works
lol
disease itselfyeah i think the disease is worse now too lol
before when i had been takin ALOT more of the prednisone
i thought "oh this disease isnt so bad, just slightly annoying"

now with the lower dose of drugs im thinkin
"oh this disease is terrible, i hope i can walk today"
lol

Hang in there, Star. I've been in treatment since November or so, and seeing improvement on MTX in some areas and some places hurt worse. I weaned myself off prednisone early on, so all I take is MTX and relafen for pain. My jaw used to kill me and now it's better. MTX does take a while to kick in. I suggest you keep track of how you feel each day. Sometimes it's hard to remember what progress (or lack of) you make. When I look through my notes, I realize that I used to be nauseated off and on all the time. But now, I rarely am nauseated. So some of the side effects from the MTX passed for me and improvement has been made.i hope the mtx works for me like it sorta did for u
my doctor had also sayd monday that if i needed it
he would add another drug, to help out
but idk what else he could add

he's tryin to stop the prednisone, cuz of all the side effects, so each time he lowers the dose
i see him again, july 20th, hopefully i'll feel better then

There are a number of combination meds available. If the MTX doesn't work, they can do something more, don't worry. You are far from exhausting everything possible to help you. I think getting off prednisone is a good thing. I might have less pain with it, but I also might have side effects which I don't want. My doc said that you WILL get side effects with pred, sooner or later. And I also have seen that you can get used to a bit more pain. It's not been anything that debilitates me, though I do limp! My feet are bothering me at this point. StarPerson121,

Definitely disease is worse than side effects.  I tried MTX but after a while, the doc decided it wasn't working and switched me to Enbrel.  I hope the MTX kicks in for you.  Keep us posted.
yeah with the prednisone theres tons a bad side effects
seems like i got the worst ones tho lol
i got
weight gain lol, now im so fat lol not too fat tho
steroid induced acne, which is really bad and annoying
and steroid induced diabetes, and that means no yummy food anymore

so i got some bad side effects, but the doctor sayd when i stop the prednisone i should be back to normal lol
yup
by the time its december i should know if its working
hopefully sooner tho... but i doubt it

The disease. Recently Lynn49 has posted many articles and links to articles about the bodily harm chronic inflammation can, and does, cause. Additionally, Levlarry posted an article (which generated a great deal of discussion) regarding why early and aggressive treatment is not only recommended but why it is becoming THE way to treat inflammatory arthritis.

The drugs used to treat JIA and RA not only make us feel better, they also prevent joint erosion and deformity and reduce the chance that we will experience extra-articular (occurring outside joints) events.

The disease, by a long shot.

Cheers, Shug
yeah the disease is bad
but dont u think the side effects r just awful too?
If the side effects are bothering you that much, perhaps a call to the rheumatologist's office is in order?  You can also try talking to your pharmacist - he/she is an expert on medications and adverse reactions.

You got some great advice!!!
I have to go w/ the gang and say the disease is definitely the worst!!!!

Hang in w/ the MTX..I started feeling better after about 3 months...  and gradually got a little better time after time....  then at 8 months we went to the biologic....  but you (hopefully) will have success w/ the MTX and not need the biologics.....

I am hoping for you, Star!!
hmmm i just had an appoinment with my rhuematologist monday
and i complained about all the side effects
thats why he lowered my dose lol
but now it hurts alot worse than before

so i guess if i wanna look and feel normal
i'll have to suffer with tonz of pain

at least until the mtx starts workin
[QUOTE=StarPerson121]yeah the disease is bad yeah i think next time i'll talk to him about it
i have an appointment july 20th
or who knowz? maybe the side effects wont be as bad then
since we lowered the dose of prednisone
and he's supposed to keep lowering it each time i see him

the side effects arent terrible
they seem to be easily manageable
like the steroid induced diabetes, i just have to be careful about my blood sugar
which isnt too hard, altho i almost had to use insulin and if it goes over 200 i'll need insulin

and the steroid induced acne, lol. well the doctor had given me a special medicine soap, to get rid of it. which isnt working so good, but ive only been using it for about 3 weeks.

i think the worst thing is gaining weight, cuz i cant do anything about that lol
It's even harder for you at your age, with the weight and acne and all that stuff that makes you feel self conscious.  But some of these things will straighten out when you get off the steriods, though the trade-off is more pain.  Like I said before, I was willing to have more pain in order to avoid the steroids, and reading your post makes me think I did the right thing.  Try to be patient.  Maybe now it's summer and you don't have to go to school it will be easier.yeah since its summer its easier
i was havin trouble the last few weeks of school
with kids noticing that i looked slightly different than usual

hopefully by the time school starts, i'll be almost off the steroids and i'll look normal again
