since some of u ppl know i have diabetes sorta

then u know i gotta be careful about what i eat

when i checked my blood this morning
it was 82
so that means im doing good

but i dont wanna be high today
what should i eat?

for breakfast im having-

an egg
oatmeal
oh instead of a bagel, my mom switched it
so now its mini pancakes w/ sugar free syrup
yogurt
and a banana

what should i eat for lunch?

and for dinner
on saturday night's we usually get pizza
do u think that would be bad or not??

oh and btw, my parents decided that on friday night i dont get mcdonalds anymore
cuz it was so high, only every once in a while now

so do u have any suggestions of what i should eat on friday nights now??
StarPerson1212009-06-27 05:13:57
so do u have any suggestions of what i should eat on friday nights now??
Without knowing exactly what you doctor have recommended regarding caloric intake, distribution of calories over the day, food restrictions and food recommendations it is very difficult to answer your question in even the most general terms. Especially since you have already indicated you do not eat vegetables and that you shun salads.

There are literally hundreds of online sites that offer menu suggestions based on caloric recommendation, restrictions, and recommendations.

My suggestion would be to do the necessary research, create a week's worth of menus and discuss that menu with your mother. Have you and your parents considered making an appointment with a nutritionist?
thats the very difficult part. my diabetes doctor, didnt say what i could eat. she didnt say how many calories i should eat. or how many carbohydrates i could have per day or per meal. she didnt even give any reccomendations of what to do. all she said was NO high carb meals, but she didnt say what was high. she basically didnt do  anything but give me a meter and let me go.

when my grandma became a diabetic she at least got a paper that told her what she could eat and how big her servings should be. but i didnt tho.

nope my parents havent considered making an appoinment with a nutritionist or dietician.
or anyone, maybe we should.

and also, the weirdest part is, we never have an appoinment with the diabetes doctor. all we do is call her on mondays.

i wish i had some help, at least she shouldve told me how much carbs i could have a day.

but im clueless and my parents dont know how much i should eat, so basically it seems like a guessing game

and thats why i asked u ppl
Monday is coming, sit down with your parents and formulate a detailed list of questions to ask the "diabetes doctor" during the weekly call.

I, for one, cannot be part of a guessing game that might endanger you health. I could make suggestions 'til the proverbial cows come  home, but more important to your health and well-being is to question your physician and get some guidelines.

Best wishes, Shug
yup i'll think of some questions
we already have one
lol
when i went to the ER that day
she had ordered that the took blood to send to a lab in California
and they were suppposed to have the results back last week
it had been 3 weeks and they were due
the test, tells if u have the antibodies to get diabetes
so she would know if i had it forever or not
but she didnt get them, she didnt even mention it

well im gonna eat lunch in about 40 minutes
if u have any better suggestions than what my mom decided
then tell me

she thinks for lunch today i should have
a hotdog and some mozzerella sticks
its sounds yummy, but im not sure its so good if i wanna keep my sugar down

so if u or anyone else has suggestions, than feel free to share them
ok
so i ate lunch
i had:

2 hotdogs
some low fat or maybe it was fat free cottage cheese
the 3 leftover mozzerella sticks that i didnt eat yesterday at lunch
and some strawberries with whipped cream
and a glass of milk

i hope that doesnt make my sugar high tonight

oh and instead of having pizza
i decided i'll get ravioli's tonight
when i eat pizza, me and my friend eat it on saturday nights together
when we eat it, we usually eat a whole large pizza together
so i think the ravioli's would have less carbs, than half of a large pizza
hopefully...

but anyways im gonna try and be careful today
good luck!

Half of my family is diabetic or pre-diabetic. None of them eat right, EXCEPT my mom. But she learned how diabetics ate because she use to be my uncles in-home nurse and he was a diabetic. So... I guess it was kinda like pre-training for her, when she became diabetic.

Oh and if you do order pizza, ask them to make it with marinara sauce, instead of the regular pizza sauce. My sister makes my moms pizzas that way for her... my sister works for a pizza joint. You cannot really tell a difference, just not as much sauce. The regular sauce has a lot of sugar in it, as where the marinara sauce does not. Oh and ask for wheat crust too, if it is available. Wheat crust produces less sugar after being digested, where as regular crust produces a lot of sugar after being digested.

There are a lot of foods that produce sugar after or while being digested, but you would not think they did since they did not contain that much sugar when you consumed it.
Star,
If you find out that your diabetes is Prednisone induced, you might want to see if there another type of medication you could try.  Prednisone always makes my sugar levels and blood pressure much higher than normal.  Does your Rheumatologist know that the Prednisone is making your sugar levels higher?  Prednisone is generally used as a quick fix, with RA, so maybe the plan isn't to keep you on it for very long.

It must be hard for a 13 year old to have to learn to eat healthy.  It's hard enough for old people, like me.  LOL!

Hang in there, sweetie, I'm sure things will get straightened out with time.

Renee
oh ok
all u ppl are really helpful lol
so thnx i guess

yeah my rhuematologist doctor person knows that the prednisone made my blood sugar high, after all he was the person who first told us to go to the ER cuz of it

oh SnowOwl, i did terrible
we decided not for me to eat pizza
so we had bought frozen ravioli's at the store
and cooked those up for me
and oh, i thought id be fine
or at least not too high

but after dinner, when i felt really sick
we all knew i would be high
but at 7 tonight when we checked, we hadnt expected it to be so high
it was the highest its ever been since the day at the ER

it was 281
my mom and dad were really mad
but my mom was the one who cooked my food
and put it on my plate

but now we arent gonna do that again
my mom is going to be more careful she sayd
and i'll be careful too

my grandma, showed me a list of good food suggestions for diabetics
thats what her doctor had given her
lol

so anyways i was bad
and now i really gotta try harder
yeah i hope it came down
after we checked it
i had an ice cream cup
and some sugar free jello
but thatz cuz my grandma gave it to me

i guess i was bad today

yeah i'll drink alot of water
and try to do exercise
just to keep my blood sugar lower
until we can talk to my doctor

cuz its bad to be so high
so often
it could damage some things

so my mom is gonna tell my doctor
and ask her about what we can do

yeah
i guess i should be drinking water
too bad my parents are both sleeping now
and i dont know how to use my meter lol

or i would check it
just to see what it was

but idk how to do that

i guess i'll just be careful
and hope it goes down

and tommorow i wont eat bad stuff
i'll be really careful
yup so anyways i didnt feel too sick at night
and we checked my blood at 7 in the morning like usual
it was 72
so thats good
but today maybe i'll follow ur advice
cuz i dont wanna have high blood sugar again tonight

oh i had a hotdog yesterday
hmmm.. is there anythin else i should eat instead? cuz two days of hotdogs would be boring, even tho i could have one if i wanted it

so my mom decided my breakfast, im sad i didnt get to pick
it doesnt seem like i get much to eat

so i get:

cereal
yogurt
a banana
and 2 mini cresants (or however u spell it)

and we're going to check my blood 2 hours after i eat
Doesn't the white breads and white flour turn to sugar in your blood stream? A simple switch to wheat products might be helpful. I've been dieting for the last couple of month trying to get in shape....and get healthy. I'm not that over weight but I've lost about 14lbs with simple changes. There are so many low-fat options out there now that taste so much like the full fat stuff it's amazing to me. Ice cream is one of them. Bryers makes a no-sugar added ice cream that's really great.

Do some research on your own Star. Google diabetic diets and pick and choose some easy things that will help lower your sugar. Make a list of items you think you could easily incorporate into your diet and give the list to your Mother before she goes grocery shopping. In my opinion these are things your Mother should be doing....and for all I know she might be. I don't know; but if not maybe you could take the lead on these things.

Maybe the diabeties is only from the predisone and it will change back once you've stopped using it. I hope that's the case but it sounds like it runs in your family. Isn't diabeties heriditary? (Sorry about spelling) You might be looking at that in your future anyway. No better time than now to learn to control it.

I know you're young....but you appear to be pretty bright. You mother has a lot on her right now. Show her how smart you can be by being of assistance to her managing this problem.

We'll be here to help you. Good Luck.
star- are you on medication for diabetes? I don't remember you saying so. You're morning numbers sound good. Whenever you take you blood after you have been eating you will get higher numbers. It's my understanding that the morning numbers and the test that they take to show the average over three months are the important tests.
Keep up the good work of being careful with your diet!
yeah Lovie, ur right wheat products r supposed to be better for u
too bad my dad went grocery shopping yesterday
maybe next week, he'll get foods that r better for me

nope i dont take any medicine for diabetes
and thats what im tryin to avoid
if my sugar keeps going over 200
my mom sayd she WILL tell my doctor
and then i'll have to use insulin
my mom's been giving me a break
and not tellin my doctor cuz she knows my other problems r bugging me alot too
and the insulin would just add to the pain

so thats why im being extra careful now
and checkin more than twice a day
so i can plan my meals easily, and hopefully i'll be ok

yeah my grandma has diabetes
and my grandpa
and my dad's brothers have it
and my mom, has high blood sugar but not high enough to be diabetic
so it seems like a family thing

but thats the uncertain part
if its a "family" thing that wont mean anything to me
since im adopted lol
if it was hereditary, then it doesnt matter for me anyways

hopefully tho its just cuz of the prednisone

anyways in about 30 minutes im checkin my blood again
i hope its low
ok we checked my blood sugar
so 2 hours after breakfast, my blood sugar is 219
so for lunch
my mom decided that i get

chicken
stuffing
mashed potatoes
and brocoli

i hate brocoli
its gross

I dont know but it seems to me that you eat a lot of carbs.  Stuffing AND mashed potatoes?  Why not just one?  Also for breakfast you had mini croissants. Cereal, yogurt and fruit was a good meal all by itself.  You really need to watch how many carbs you take in and your Mom needs to plan better for you, sorry, you should not be coming to a message board for this, your Mom is the adult and she needs to take control!

ok so i just ate lunch lol
it was sorta yummy
except the brocoli
for desert i had 3 sugar free chocolate cookies

yeah i think i eat alot of carbs

well i didnt come to a message board just for this
i had other reasons, and stuff but
lately this is my biggest problem
so thats why ive been talkin about it alot lol

i hope my blood sugar will be ok tonight tho
I dont know why you ask when you dont take the advice you are given and do what you want anyway.  A lot of people have given you good advice yet you continue the way you want.  Sometimes you have to take the advice you are given and not just do what you want, what is the point then?  Sorry but I just want to wake you up a little because it doesnt seem like you are listening or maybe even understanding what people are saying!well everyone seems to give slightly different advice
so im not sure who's to take

anyways tommorow is monday
and monday is the day we call the diabetes doctor
maybe my mom will ask her for some advice too

id prefer if she gave me a list of choices to eat
thats what my grandma's diabetes doctor did
and for her it worked

and anyways its my mom decision
i just suggest stuff
but most of the time, she gets the final choice of what i eat
unless we eat at a resturant or something like that

but my mom's the one who picked
that i got mashed potatoes and stuffing

Ok she picked mashed potatoes and stuffing but you do not have to eat both or either!  It is simple as that! Eating too many carbs when you have high blood sugar is not good!  I am very surprised your doctor hasnt given you a diet already, that is the first thing they usually do!  You ate raviolis yesterday, first high carb--the raviolis and second high sugar-- tomato sauce and your blood sugar skyrocketed!
well everyone seems to give slightly different advice yeah my diabetes doctor had decided not to give me a diet
or any insulin, i got nothin from her but a blood meter

now if i had a diet, then it would be easier, maybe.

oh and with the ravioli's i didnt use tomato sauce
i used alfredo sauce instead, i looked on the nutrition facts
and compared it to the tomato sauce one
and the alfredo cheese sauce had less carbs and sugars than the tomato sauce
so i used that instead
Maybe, just maybe that is an indication that it is time to use your favourite search engine and along with your parents research diabetic diets, food exchanges, and gaining control over your blood sugar.
well

i did this morning, i googled diabetic diets
and got somewhat of an idea of what to do
and my grandma yesterday helped
by showing me her diabetic diet paper she has from her doctor
that tells her what she might want to do
of course she doesnt follow it exactly, but it helps

and according to her diabetes food paper, it seems like im eating a little too much
but maybe not, her's is for type 2 diabetes only
maybe type 1 works different
im not sure
I am sorry but I agree with Shug, I dont think we should give you any more advice, you should see your doctor or have your Mom join a forum for people with diabetes.  In any event this is a support forum for RA and although we do give each other advice about things it is always best to see your doctor.  So that is what I suggest you do because it is not responsible for us to give you advice, your Mom needs to take responsibility for you. You are only 13 after all.hmmm
i guess ur right
oh SnowOwl u didnt do anything wrong
my mom did some sorta stuff online
and it happens that
type 2 diabetes diets r very similar to type 1 diabetes diets
so ur advice was pretty good

and the diabetes doctor will probably give similar advice
if she gives advice... the only thing she told us before was
NO high carb meals, altho i dont exactly know how high, high is

so ur advice was good SnowOwl, dont be upset or anythin
ok
My husband's a type II diabetic, and we've had nutritional counseling at the hospital.  Some nutritional concepts are simply common sense, but Star I'm sorry if I gave you foolish and risky dietary advice.  I don't think we've given Star any bad advice. Yes, we're all saying different things, but if you put them together we're giving Star several ideas that he can give some thought to....apply a little more research (Definately advised several times by several members) and get started applying to his life right away. My mother has type 2 diabetes. The things you need to know are a lot of the same things...they certainly can't hurt. You talking to your Grandmother was an excellent idea. Find things on her menu plan that you can incorporate into your own.

I don't disagree about the parent thing. You should involve your parents Star. But let's face it.....I'm totally embarrashed for his parents to check out our lovely site here lately. I sure don't want anyone to see the kinds of stuff that been going on here at time.....but they probable need to see it. I know I wouldn't want my daugter coming to a site like this if she had health concerns.

yeah most of the stuff u ppl suggested seemed right compared to my grandma's menu
like how one person had mentioned wheat products instead of the other
her menu sayd to use wheat stuff

yeah i know i should involve my parents
and i probably will

ooh and remember what day tommorow is
its the day we call the diabetes doctor
i wonder what we should tell her
my mom has some questions for her
of course i do to
but idk if she would wanna answer my questions

anyways i check my blood in about a half hour
i hope its good tonight
hasnt been the last 2 nights

ok i did good today

i mustve been really careful
when we checked my blood tonight
i was ONLY 138
yay
so u know if im careful
i can obviously control it without insulin
i just had gotten carried away the two days before today
and i ate too much of the bad stuff

but if im careful and do the right thing
i'll be fine
but she's the only endocrinologist i know about
she's doesnt answer questions much tho
she doesnt have the time
she says
so she just gets my numbers for blood sugar
and then she either says good job
or ur doing bad this time

and then she usually hangs up the phone
but my mom has questions this time
and i hope they get answered
