Hello again! I hope everyone has a safe, fun, relaxing, pain free 4th of July! We are having people over for a BBQ but we are calling it the "Pre Surgery Get Together" since my Surgery is Monday morning (I am getting my tonsils and adenoids removed, deviated septum fixed).

Anyway to get back on topic, I just want to hear suggestions, advice, etc on different things.

1.) How do you deal on a day to day basis with your arthritis?
2.) What type of exercise do you do to keep your joints strong?
3.) What do you do (other than medication) when you have a flair up?
4.) Do you use any herbal remedies?

For me:
1.) I just try to ignore the pain if it is a 1-5 on a scale of 1-10. 6-10 I usually take tylenol arthritis (along with the celebrex).
2.) I am a member at Bally's and my fiancee helps me with leg exercises (30 minutes on the eliptical, 15 minute weight training, and 2 laps around the track). When I go to a place with a pool, I usually just go swimming.
3.) I like to take long baths and put warm towels on my knees.
4.) My mom tries to make me eat cinnamon and honey because she said she saw it helps. It just makes me sick, lol.

Any input would be appreciated, maybe there is something you do that could help me and vice versa!
im having an awesome 4th of July weekend lol

i barely have any pain today, yay

Ok time to answer ur questions

1.  i lay on my bed all day if i hurt ALOT, but if its just a little i try to do normal stuff
2.  for exercise, well i walk everyday now and that makes me hurt less lol
3. hmmm idk, im not even sure if i know what a flare up is, but isnt it when u hurt really bad? well when my knee was super swollen and warm and red last weekend, i didnt do anything except lay on my bed, but my mom suggested to use ice or some kinda heat thing.
4. nope i think herbal stuff is gross, cuz its like natural and isnt it supposed to be healthy?

so those r my answers to ur questions, i gotta admit it was sorta fun to answer the questions, especially cuz i used different colors lol
a flare up, as my drs have told me is basically when you have "an attack" whether its pain, swelling, or all of the above. My mom used to call it a "Knee infection" when I was a child.  oh sorta like what i had
cuz my knee was swollen and hot and it hurt a ton
my dad even thought it had fluid in it lol
it lasted for a few days

but its all better today
so thats good for me
Mrs. David, I hope your surgery goes well and you get lots of nice ice cream during recovery!  I guess you have to go off your meds for that... it is usual for surgery.

In answer to your questions;

1.  One foot in front of the other, doing what has to be done (usually with ice packs and hot showers!)
2.  Light weights, exercise bike, walking and outdoor bike riding
3.  I like ice, though some prefer heat, and I love, love, love a hot shower or a long, hot soak!
4.  Generally I feel pretty good most days, well as good as can be expected.
Walking is my main exercise .
Thank fully I have not had a major flare in awhile now, two years.
bump TTT1.) How do you deal on a day to day basis with your arthritis?
right now I'm doing pretty well.  I'm stable on my current disease and pain treatment regimine.  My day to day issues surround function due to RA damage
2.) What type of exercise do you do to keep your joints strong?
I walk the dog at least twice a day and I do water aerobics 4-6 days a week.  I also use my bands for strength and ROM training at least 5 days a week
3.) What do you do (other than medication) when you have a flair up?
depends on whether its a single joint or all body.  I use heat or ice to calm things down.  I adjust my workouts (usually tone down intensity)
4.) Do you use any herbal remedies?
fish oil when i remember to buy it :)
1.) How do you deal on a day to day basis with your arthritis?
It depends on the day...most days I can work around the limitations; other days I ask for help; still others I take an analgesic, or two.
I also try to remember that not all aches, pains, and problems are RA-related.

2.) What type of exercise do you do to keep your joints strong?
Garden year round; walk every day for at least 30 minutes; work with resistance bands twice a day along with isometric and isotonic exercises.

3.) What do you do (other than medication) when you have a flair up?
Again, it depends on the type and severity of the flare: heat and/or ice; analgesic balms; massage; PT for extended flares; reduce garden and yard work as necessary and limit other exercise if indicated.

4.) Do you use any herbal remedies?
Not currently. Recently all supplements, whether vitamin or herbal were discontinued on the advice of my physicians.

Other than having to take a handful of pills I don't really notice it.

No, but I take a large dose of omega-3 EFAs every day.
I dont do 4th of July but I hope you all had a great day today.

1.) How do you deal on a day to day basis with your arthritis?
Same as you if its 1 -5 ignore it best I can. Anything more than that I take Zydol and a very very occasionally a sleeping pill

2.) What type of exercise do you do to keep your joints strong?
I do pilates, walk, when I'm feeling energetic bounce on my trampette

3.) What do you do (other than medication) when you have a flair up?
Take more zydol, stop when the itching gets bad, take ibuprophen (even though it exacerbates my asthma) and when all else fails have a good cry and get hubby to give me lots of hugs.. am flaring badly at the moment and have acquired a new pet name 'his little snap dragon'

4.) Do you use any herbal remedies?
Take a StarOil tab every day, take a tsp of malt otherwise no.
Pretty soggy 4th of July here, but the husband and I are enjoying our lazy Saturday. .. anyone else?
