Drug withdrawal symptoms! | Arthritis Information

Hi guys, just thought I would tell you what happened to me last night.  I kept waking up regularly feeling really jittery and as if ants were crawling all over me.  Then hubby woke me up at one stage and said that he thought I was having fits at first but it was more like body shivering on three occasions.  I know in the past I have had the crawling ants feeling and I usually have missed a tablet or two accidentally (Oxycontin), so I was a bit worried and thought it could be the Tramadol as I have been taking 7 a day instead of the prescribed 4.

I phoned my GP and she said it is definitely the tramal but she is seriously worried about my pain medicine regime, she said it is very messy, and I have to stick to the 4 tramal only. I was crying as I spoke to her as the pain was so intense and unbearable, every joint in my body felt on fire and my spine, hips and pelvis were incredibly sore with OA, my hands and fingers , wrists and shoulders, neck were the worst, so she said she was ringing my RD to organise some hospitalisation for pain mangement urgently, so I am hoping it is not going to be a waste of time like the last time and that I get this pain under control, and that they do it in time for me to accompany Liam for 3 weeks into Brisbane hospital.  Hugs Janie. Janie, Im sorry you are having such a bad time. I take tramadol and you have to be very careful with it. I missed a day as i forgot to renew my prescription. I was so ill, had chills, shaking, sickness. I didnt realise it could be that bad, so i should imagine taking too many like you have would make you feel a lot worse.
When my pain gets too bad my Rheumy gives me a steroid shot ( i dont know if you are alowed this) and i can only have so many a year.
I hope they can get you pain under control. How is Liam doing?
Hi Mrs P, thankyou for your reply, I can have steroid shots but the pain is in all joints so I may have to have prednisone I.V, I just wish they would hurry up and organise something.  Liam has improved quite a bit thankyou, while waiting to go into hospital, we are so relieved.  He still tells me he is in pain but he is trying to do it without drugs.  I really hope the hospital stint is successful.  He has been diagnosed with Separation anxiety, particularly from me, turns out, he dreams I am dying and he is really worried about me when he leaves me, so I think psychology will help him too. Thanks again, Janie.

Im glad Liam is improving, my daughter was suffering with swollen , hot knees and i thought the worse but she has bursitis and in her hip.Its calmed down now thank goodness.

My eldest who is 21 had seperation anxiety as a young child, so many kids seem to get it, she eventually out grew it but its scary for them at the time. The best thing that ever happened was a school trip she went on to Paris. She wanted to go but got so over wrought about it , then a teacher took her aside, assured her if things got too bad she would send for me...I didnt hear a thing for 4 days, when she came home, she was so proud of herself...lol. A stint away is good for both of you, unfortunetly Liams is hospital . I hope you are able to go.
What a great deal is piled on your plate...I can only begin to imagine how overwhelmed you must be and I send you my very best wishes for a speedy resolution to at least some of your current difficulties and a gradual solution to the rest.

Cheers, Shug

edited to lasso a missing 'r' and get it back in its proper place.
Spelunker2009-07-06 06:34:11My heart goes out to you!!!  I hate that you're going through such a difficult time!  It's so very hard trying to manage pain.  You're lucky that your GP is so understanding.  My RD won't even prescribe pain medication.

I hope the hospital will be able to get your pain levels down to where you will be pain free.  In this day and age, there's no reason for a person to suffer like that!  I hope you get this under control as soon as possible.

Hang in there, sweetie, better days are ahead!

Renee

I hope you feel better soon Janie. I'll say a prayer for your comfort.

Much & many hugs to you, Janie. I hope this trip helps you with your pain.

janie.... I hope you are feeling better very soon.I hope things start to get better for you soon I experienced opiate withdrawal several years ago (pre-RA).  I had injured my back, and was taking 6 to 8 vicodin 5/500 per day (along with medrol, NSAIDs, ice/heat/etc).  Vicodin dulled the pain, but as soon as a dose wore off I was back to where I started from.  After repeated visits to the doc, I finally said WTF and went to a chirpractor.  Keep in mind I didn't "believe" in chiropractors (still don't know if I do or not...) but after that one visit (various manipulations, followed by deep massage) the pain was GONE.  So I stopped taking the vicodin.  Big mistake... 10 hours later I had typical withdrawal symptoms.  Nausea, agitation, cold sweats, lower GI distress... I called my doc and was told to go ahead and take a vicodin, and VOILA.  The withdrawal symptoms stopped.  Over the next couple of days I was able to completely stop taking it.  But man did that suck!
Many gentle hugs to you! I hope things get better quickly. Janie,
Sorry you are having so much pain.  Be careful about taking so much Tramadol, the max daily dose is 400mg/day.  The medication has been known to have seizures associated with it.  Sounds like a stay in the hospital to get your pain under control is a great idea.
Phats
Edited to clarify 400 mg =)
