Shallow I know, but... | Arthritis Information

Hi I'm new here.  Still getting used to the idea of RA

I just started on methotrexate 3 months ago and so far haven't had any serious side effects.  I do keep hearing about hair thinning etc and that is what my shallow question is all about.  Until recently I have been colouring my hair and now I'm wondering if it will be strong enough to abuse without it falling out.  I have noticed the hair on my legs is much less dense and I hardly have to shave my legs now, is the same going to happen to my head?  I'd be grateful to hear from anyone on MXT and hear of any 'hair related' issues.

Thanks  Pam

Hi Pam...welcome,

I've been on MTX for about 14 years and have been colouring my hair for all of those years and way before the RA.  I've not had a problem.  I've noticed that I don't need to shave my legs as often as I had before the MTX.  I do notice more hair on the floor after I blow dry it, but as far as looking at my hair and noticing hair loss...nope..nothing like that at all.

Pam,

I've been on MTX for I guess 4 years now and I don't have any problems. I too have colored my hair for probable 19 or 20 years now and although the coloring process can cause your hair to fall out a little more so than normal, non-colored hair; I really have not noticed much of a hair loss.

I've got really thick hair, and I do notice some on the floor and in my brush; but thinking back I've ALWAYS had this. It's not caused by the MTX in my opinion.

Good Luck; and Welcome to AI. Gald you're here. Hope to see more of you.

I am on low dose mtx and Enbrel.  I don't color my hair I HIGHIGHT IT

By the way 50 is still a few years off (I had my first knee replacement at 42) so even more reason to want to keep what hair I have.

I am kind of loving this not having to shave my legs thing though. Especially down here in Australia where summer goes forever and its too hot for pantyhose and long pants for most of the year.

Thanks for all your positive feed back.  I get tired of everyone feeling sorry for me and treating me like china or just not understanding why sometimes I feel so tired I can't get by without an afternoon nap.  I like to think I just get on with life and do what I can and let go of what I can't.

Pam

Pam.   I am fifty and I LOVE MY HAIR

Welcome pammy I don't take many meds YET... so can't help you. But hope to see more posting. Pat Doesn't australia have alot of BIG bugs and BIG snakes?????

Yes to both bugs and snakes.  We are home to the most poisonous spiders, jelly fish, snakes and other nasties.  Don't often see them at home though.  Every once in a while someone gets bitten and you hear all about it on the news.  It took me a while to get used to but in 20 years I've only seen a couple of snakes and that was out hiking.  Mind you we have some ants that can give you a big wallop.

Its all relative.

Pam
