What type of shoes do you wear? | Arthritis Information

Hi Guys-

Anyone have any shoe brands or types of shoes you can pass on to me that work well for you that I may be able to try?

I have been on a hunt for the perfect pair of shoes for years now to help my achy feet and so far my saucony tennis shoes are the most comfortable but to wear them to work doesn't exactly look nice when you're trying to dress up. I will wear sandles but can ony do it for a day and have to go back to my tennis shoes the next few. My feet hurt to walk during the day in them.

It's the balls of my feet that feel like i have a lump in them at times or a hard marble when i walk on them, and my toes hurt to bend them when I walk. I've tried aerosoles, but too thin, tried flip flops but cant wear those to work, anything with memory foam doesnt work well, i need really cushiony , soft (like foam) in that area I guess, most shoes have it in the heal area I've noticed.

Any brand names you can pass on , or types of shoes you wear that you love, please let me know! I'd be very greatful!!

I also wonder if I should see a foot dr. to consider orthotics??

Thanks

Kelly
for work.. I buy dressy ballet slippers and slip in a support in gel.......  that's the ONLY thing that works for me that can look nice for work..

sandals .. I can wear some from naturalizer in wide....
Oh I know exactly what you're talking about...you just descibed my feet :-)  here is what helped me after going to podiatrist(sp) and being dianosed with a neuroma ( RD later dx RA) I was fitted for orthotics. never helped me.. later learned about a insole that is similar to orthotic called Powerstep Love,Love,Love them... they make any shoe feel better.. it really evens out the pressure that the ball of foot gets (if that makes sense?)

I wear Sas shoes at work..oxford style.. when I need to dress up I find that clog style heel  works best, I guess cause the sole of the shoe is pretty much the same level. I hope you find something that helps, this is the biggest issue for me with Ra...
Naot makes a line of shoes (I think called "Eden") that features a feminine yet supportive pair of Mary Jane-style shoes that I can wear without too much trouble. They come with a silly clip on bow that is easily removed. I love their sandals; a foot bed that conforms to the shape of your foot, has excellent built in arch support and a nicely designed toe shape that does allows space for toes to naturally spread and grip. There Mary Jane-style "sneaker" is my favorite slip on.

Finn Comfort also makes comfortable shoes that are not too clunky; Pedor's makes shoes that are comfortable, but not too stylish; P.W. Minor makes superb athletic-style shoes that feature removable insoles that wash and dry without shrinkage or wrinkling.

To happy feet!

At onset I couldn't wear anything but slippers. Now most days I am back to my 4" heels- means a lot when you are only 4' 10".

You guys are fantastic!!  Thanks for all the info, I'm looking online right now at some of the stuff!  Anymore ideas, send em my way

wanttobe: That is awsome you can wear heels! My feet were horrible in the beginning, better with medications, now they're starting to hurt again..so frustrating!

i wear crocs....and only crocs...they have such a brilliant range now, not just the clog style...I have some  cyprus ones for going out and they feel as if as if I have my flat ones on

I know that a great many people swear by the comfort and durability of Crocs. I have three different styles and, for me, they do not provide enough arch nor ankle stability. I find myself constantly off balance and floundering around.

I am always pleased when anyone finds comfort and support in their choice of shoes.
Klynn- I have to say giving up my pretty shoes was one of the most depressing parts of RA for me. I was wearing low heels and finding my ankles still hurting. So I put on my pretty shoes and I found they didn't really hurt any more in those then they did in the low ones. They just plain hurt! So I said why wear shoes you don't like?
Then the best thing is they stopped being a trouble area for me.  Hope yours stop being a trouble area too!

Me too Wannabe, me too. The day I finally knew that I would never again where high heels or sexy slings I cried as I boxed up each of 112 pairs of shoes to take to the resale store. Pisces love their shoes!

I will have to vicariously enjoy pretty shoes through you!
I've got some Minnetonka moccasins that are very comfortable for summer.  I also like sandals with velcro straps that are adjustable across your toes, because as the feet swell you can make more room for yourself.

I know it won't help for work, but for casual wear I found that skate shoes are extremely comfortable.  What I mean are shoes for skateboarding.  They're heavily padded all around, and roomy, being actually shaped like a human foot, imagine.  Some fit better than others, though, so it's necessary to try them on.  Some also have elastic between the tongue and the bottom, on the sides, which I cut off.

Obviously, at age 53 and with RA, being non-athletic in every way despite my stabs at playing golf, I don't skate.  But I love the shoes.  Since I wear boot cut (what we called "bell bottoms") jeans, my feet in skate shoes don't look huge like those of the teenaged boys with their baggy, butt-crack showing shorts.
I had a field day at DSW shoes one day and bought alot of SKetcher brand shoes.. casual slip on easy to wear....not too ugly ;) and comfy!!  like Bluehour says they are a "skater" brand but are branching out and their stuff can look cute... if not dressy.I just ordered my third pair of Wolky shoes, they are the most comfortable and lasting.  I had one pair of sandals for 3 years and I wore them almost everyday.  They're washable.  Also wear Danko shoes.  They can be pricey but my shoes last forever.

My feet are a good investment.  Here's the site. Lindy

112 pairs Shug!!!  And I thought I had shoes!

Speaking of skater shoes I happened upon a pair of black suede trimmed in pink with a little skull & crossbones here and there on them by accident. My son ordered a hat and in the box came this pair of shoes in my size! I emailed the company and told them they were sent in error and would they send me a return label. There had been no charge for them. They didn't answer so I emailed one more time and now I consider them mine.
I think I am a little old (nearly 49) for the skull & crossbones but since I hear they are so comfortable maybe I'll use them for walking.
I have severe plantar facitis and I work in a grocery store so I stand all day long and I swear by Dansco clogs. I have a couple pairs, they're expensive but when you have serious foot issues it's worth it. I have several pair of various Land's End and LL Bean shoes and sandals (both sell several styles in wide widths, which I need).  I also have a couple pair of MBT's which I love.  But most of all, I just go barefoot.  I always have an extra pair of shoes in the car in case I forget to wear them when I walk out of the house. Oh, and I think I've only owned 1 pair of "high heel" shoes in my life, and that was back in junior high.  They weren't even all that high, but I decided then and there that I was not going to wear something so painful and pointless. omg if I couldn't wear my favorite shoes at least a little while just go ahead and shoot me
Shoes are my passion and splurge...have every kind under the sun, lotta heels cause I'm short. 90% of the time I wear flip flops year round at home...Nike and Tommy Hilfiger flips have just enough support to be comfortable for me. Dr Marten, Mudd, Steve Madden, and Angolini  have great flats and pumps I can walk in pretty well.
Work boots and only work boots, guess they don't fit into the look nice style you girls are discussing. What I wouldn't do to wear my high heels again.  I actually kept one pair.  Just couldn't part with them.  They're too beautiful, like a piece of art.  I know they're terrible for your feet but I spent 16 years wearing nursing shoes and my high heels were always special.  Those days are long gone.  Lindy[QUOTE=JasmineRain]I have several pair of various Land's End and LL Bean shoes and sandals (both sell several styles in wide widths, which I need).  I also have a couple pair of MBT's which I love.  But most of all, I just go barefoot.  I always have an extra pair of shoes in the car in case I forget to wear them when I walk out of the house. oh.my.god.Jas!!!  I've never heard anyone confess to my issue!! I am always barefoot in the house...and anywhere in good weather..... I too, leave a pair of slip on somethings in my car because if I get stopped or have an accident or car troubles.. Im screwed....
when I go out to pick up my teenager at  night, I never wear them.....just go right out the house, into the car.......over to his friends' and back........ who needs shoes?????

this is nothing new for me either.........always been barefoot!!
I get my shoes at the Walking Company.  There are so many differnt styles to chose from.  I have the MBT tennis shoes and three more pairs of sandles and dress shoes.  They are pricey but worth it for me.  www.thewalkingcompany.com
ToBPainFreeAgain2009-07-16 03:57:02I have found Propet brand to be the most comfortable.  Having to get rid of almost all pre-RA shoes was definitely very difficult. I have 3 pair of Propet sandals from 'the bad years' when first diagnosed - had them for about 5 years. They are very comfortable but pretty clunky. At the time I was thrilled to have found anything that I could actually be pain free in. The look was definitely further down on the list of requirements.  This summer I bought two pairs of a ballet slipper style from Propet that are suede type of fabric and light summery colors. They look much better when I'm dressed up than the 'old lady sandals' that's for sure.  I use zappos.com to look for styles. Sometimes the extra wides are already sold out so then I google the style and brand name and have always been able to find what I wanted at other online shoe stores. Free shipping usually and no problems with returns. I wear dansko for work, nike shox when I'm off and running around town.  I generally buy high end shoes because they seem to work better for my feet.  I have a couple of pairs of uggs, including a really, really ugly pair of sandels, but they are soooo comfy.

I only wear Birkenstocks -- would try earth shoes but can't find them in my size in this part of the country.

Want!  Wear that skull and crossbones proudly!  You might jump on a skateboard and zoom away.

Barefoot has always been my choice too. But since RA, my feet ache abominably without shoes.  Yes, shoes feel better than barefoot.  Makes me sad!  I still go without in the house but I limp, and I absolutely cannot walk outside without shoes.

Like you, I can't go barefoot.  Feels much better with shoes, less pain and I need the support.  Zappos is a good site for shoes if you know what you want.  I order from Zaps when they have a sale.  Lindy
For the gentleman who have to dress business casual, Clark's has a line called 'Unstructured' that is awesome. I've got 3 pair...they rock.

I could live in my Clarks Treks.  They don't have much support but are truly comfortable. When the RA first hit, my feet hurt so bad I could barely walk.  Barefoot was out of the question - a huge lifestyle change for me!  Prior to that, I usually even went barefoot at work (in my own office or cube farm lane, not the common/warehouse/non-geek areas).  Thankfully with the RA under control I can even run barefoot outside again!  The bottoms of my feet are like shoe leather. I've always had a mega hard time finding any shoes which are comfortable and look nice. I've tried shoe inserts (like Janlee suggested) to cushion my feet but they just end up causing more trouble in the long run, (although it's fair to say I'm not very good at cutting them to size)
I've finally settled with Marco Tozzi for work shoes, because they look stylish and I can wear them for 6 hours before my feet start giving me gip again.
For the rest of the time, I just try not to wear shoes at all! :) (But if i have to, Crocs are the best)

For errands and a lot of walking, I wear SAS tie shoes.  For casual I wear SAS loafers and for dress up it's SAS kind of a loafer style but plain top.  All have to be flat or I topple over.  I sure do miss high heels too and I also kept one pair of 3" red open heeled shoes just for the "memory".

What a great thread!!!!  I have a big ol' wide foot, near impossible to find something 'cute' but I am way beyond cute!  I love Merrell's but can only get them in men's sized (yes, my foot is that big!) and I like Keens too for walk-about shoes.  I do wear Croc's and had no idea they now make "pretty" shoes! (Thanks Pinny!  I can't believe Crocs might be going! sophiek2009-07-21 08:52:24

Oh wow, these shoes look soooo comfy...I wonder how they really feel?   Marigold said she buys Propet, so I took a look online:  I would love to wear my slippers all day if I could!!

I was pleasantly surprised by their look. The biggest _problem_ with them, at least right now, is how hot they are: Bob went to town and bought me 18 pairs of Thorlon hiking socks and we, yes it takes both of us, change my socks 3-4 times a day.

I had a doctor's appointment yesterday and wore a mid-calf length broomstick skirt and a tie-dyed t-shirt with a pair of turquoise and silver cascading earrings and thought I looks quite spiffy. Shug, I love that word "spiffy" and strive for that look most times!!  Lindy

spiffy is good!

Babs, better than no "Spiff" at all.  Being "Spiffy" makes me feel so much better about myself.  It's strange what a little makeup, the right hair cut, and putting on a bright colored piece of clothing does for your soul.  It doesn't take much.  I have days where I'm not even close to the definition of "Spiffy", like the last couple of months but most days I try. Not sure if anyone else has already mentioned this, i have heard MBT shoes are excellent for pain and can help with alignment, although they are very expensive and to be honest not the prettiest, but for those with alot of pain they are meant to be fantastic
