what do u take? | Arthritis Information

so im wondering, since all of u take different meds for ur disease (RA, and i know some ppl have others)

what exactly do u take? (this is sorta like a poll, again

well for me:

i take:

mtx, (and i need folic acid w/ that)
prednisone (i need pepcid w/ that to stop stomach irritation)

and thats about it, since pred and mtx supposedly cause headaches, i also frequently take tylenol

know whats weird tho, how some of u ppl take NSAID's and im NEVER supposed to use those, never ever ever lol. idk why tho, probably cuz of the mtx maybe

so WHAT DO U PPLZ TAKE FOR UR RA?
Hi SP
I take...mtx, plaquenil, sulfasalazine, celebrex and for pain I take oxycocet and fentanyl.
YOu can see in my signature what i take for RA.... and associated diseases.

Star.. you say MTX and Pred supposedly give headaches so you take tylenol..... do you take the tylenol if you dont' have a headache?    I would advise not to unless you need it.. tylenol isn't a med that has no bad side effects of its own.... so be careful w/ that too...
take it as needed, I believe is what you're told......   yes?
MTX isn't the reason they are telling you not to take NSAIDS. I don't know what it is....but it's not that. I took MTX for years as well as NSAIDS; so that can't be it.

Babs is right about the Tylenol. I was going to advise you to switch to Advil; but for what ever reason you can't take that. I've found Advil to be the multi purpose OTC. It will help a headache and is the best OTC medication I know of for inflammation. You're so young I wouldn't advise doing anything without your doctors advice though. Question your doctor about why.

Mine are in my signature line; but on a daily basis the only thing I take is Lyrica. I take Mobic, Flexaril and Tramadol as needed and Humira every other week.....but when I'm doing well; I only have to take my Lyrica for some NP & nerve damage. I also take B12 injection every few weeks to a month depending on how I'm feeling.
They are probably saying no nsaids because of your age and the side effects of these meds. They figure you are getting by on what you sre taking you are fine. Nsaids (some) can contain things that are not good for growing bodies.Nor are they aren't good for your liver or kidneys; Trust me on that one. I've had to cut back my usage after years of abuse. I've become more aware of the dangers. Sadly tylenol in large or long term dosage isn't good for you either. We have a chhronic illnesses and have long term medication usage in our future. Definately use the lowest dose possible to get by. I take MTX, Folic Acid & Prednisone. My doctor does not want me to use NSAIDS either. I think it is because of the prednisone- not sure. It might be the MTX though. Never Advil only Extra Strength Tylenol for headache or minor pain I was told.

I get emails from Arthritis today and just got this today.  Oddly enough; it applies to this discussion. Thought I'd share.

Good News for all who have Tylenol amoung their favorites.

Have you ever considered that it MIGHT be important for you to know? Personally, I would want to know exactly why I have been instructed to take some medications, whether OTC or prescription and conversely why some medications, either OTC or prescription are forbidden, as NSAID seem to be in your case.

Do you know why folic acid is recommended when taking MTX? well i take tylenol even if its just a little headache, altho i shouldnt cuz i heard that tylenol does bad things to ur liver
heard that on the news, a while ago

also when i DIDNT know about it
i had been takin advil, cuz advil works ALOT better than tylenol for me
so we told the rhuemy guy and he sayd NO, dont take those

and yeah i still throw away my calcium and Vitamin D pills, and my mom didnt buy those chewables either, id take the chewables, but i get nervous and stuff when havin to swallow BIG pills

i heard that mtx makes u not have folic acid, or somethin SO u need to replace it, or else thatd be bad, idk maybe im wrong, i wasnt sure, just guessing
well if i exercise and stay at a healthy weight, wouldnt that ensure good health too
and if i eat right and not eat junk food all the time

altho i guess u have a point, maybe i shouldnt throw my vitamin pills away
I don't take the calcium either because the pills are way too big, I gag and get them stuck in my throat when I try to swallow them.

Not saying it's the best choice....but it's a fact and I'm not the first adult here to admit it.
yeah same for me, when i used to try and take the calcium pills, theyd always get stuck and then i was freakin out thinkin id choke or somethin. it takes like 2 glasses of water for me to get down a calcium pill, and thats ALOT of water.

my mom sayd i shouldnt drink too much water, cuz thats bad. she sayd to drink about 6 glasses a day. ive already had 2 today, and im gonna have more soon, before i go back and exercise

Everything I've read recommend 8 glasses a day (8oz). I drink more than that on a regular basis myself. That's pretty much all I drink.

You'd have to drink a dramatic amount of water for it to be harmful to you. I don't mean to dispute what your Mother is telling you....but I doubt there's any fear of you drinking too much water.
Well I am a calcium pill hater too! I always took them but I was loathe to do it! One in the morning, one with dinner arrrggghhh! They are just disgustingly big.  I got lucky. My calcium levels kept coming back high. My RD said next test stop the calcium 10 days prior and lets see what happens. NORMAL! So that's how I got out of it! I still take vitamin D though. They are just little gel ball like things.
I don't take the calcium either because the pills are way too big
Most Calcium + D pills are scored and can easily be split in half and if that fails to solve the problem crushing them between two pieces of waxed paper and mixing them in a tablespoon of apple sauce, a teaspoon of peanut butter or four ounces of juice is always an option.

my mom even splits the pills in half

and i still have trouble, ive never tried them whole

id probably choke if i tried to swallow one whole

my mom and grandma take calcium pills too
for bone problems and stuff

BUT did u know, my moms calcium and vitamin D pill is actually slightly smaller than mine
thats weird, they have exactly the same amount of vitamin D and calcium but mines larger
wonder what kind she has? I need to take it but all the ones I've found are just too big. Why can't you take the same ones she takes? Are hers prescription and yours OTC, or what? See if you can get the name of hers for me. It's not that I don't think I need it.....it's just; well, we've been over why right?
my mom even splits the pills in half
Well, there we go. I have been wrong before and undoubtedly will be again. So, I will simple wish you good health and strong bones regardless the prednisone.

Cheers, Shug

ok, when she takes it tommorow morning, then i'll look at the bottle
and thats the weird part, idk why i cant take hers

we both have OTC calcium and vitamin D pills, with the same mg's
so idk why, maybe she likes hers and doesnt wanna share

even my dad has his own, wow seems like we waste money on all these pills when we could just share them, since there the same

anyways i'll check it out tommorow and tell u
Definately do. PM it to me just in case I neglect to notice this thread again. I know it's important to take it....for us both!

ok, yeah cuz if i posted it here
theres a chance u'd miss it

so i'll PM u tommorow morning, and then u'll be sure to see it
lol

hmmm, do u wanna know what kind my grandma takes too?
her's are also smaller than mine
but idk if hers have the same mg in them
i think her's are less

know what, i keep hearing commercials about calcium and vit. D
this is like the 2nd time this afternoon, what a coincidence
I guess the Viactin type which are chewy chocolate or caramel squares are not the correct kind to take? Does anyone know? oh ive heard of those
i dont think theyre the right kind tho

cuz, i had been trying to find different chewable types of calcium and i think i saw those before. i also found other good types that id want, some that i could actually take, BUT my mom sayd no.

hmmmm, im gonna ask her again tonight about chewable calcium, i wonder what she'll say...
oh ive heard of those No; WBF, those are the same. We could take those. Seems like i had one of those once and they were pretty gross. I might have to try them again; but I hate to buy the whole box and them can't stomach them.

You can get the calcium in these chewable things sort of like a bit tums too and their ok. I just need to force myself to at least take those. I'd prefer a swallowable pill though if I can find one i can take.

Until I had RA I couldn't swallow a pill at all!
so i decided that tommorow im gonna do the unthinkable
im gonna try and take my pill OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if i choke its not my fault tho, its my moms fault
ive asked her to get the chewables, but she doesnt listen

ooh if i end up choking, my mom'll do the heimlich manuever thing
ive never seen that before, my mom has tho
she choked on a cucumber once

well, wish me luck
u know i just learned to swallow pills last October
not even a whole year yet

can i break the pill more than in half? like in 4 parts? or what? and do u got any suggestions of what i could do to make it easier? like since i take it at breakfast, what kinda food would be good to swallow it with? eggs? cereal? oatmeal, yeah oatmeal seems like it would work.
tell your mom to take some of the money saved from not buying junk food and buy some chewable calcium with it.  I highly recommend Tums Smoothies.  Not chalky at all, lots of flavors. Enbrel, 50 mg weekly, and naproxen, 1000 mg a day. oh yeah
the idea of this was to see what medicine u ppl take! wow we went off topic

thnx Tee, u refocused me
cuz most ppl stopped talkin about meds and started talkin about calcium pills

but thats ok too, cuz calcium is VERY important, since a side effect of prednisone is that it makes ur bones more brittle

isnt Enbrel like a needle, shot type thing?
cuz ive heard some ppl mention it before
or is it a pill?
Yes, Enbrel is a shot - works pretty well for me. oh does it burn or sting when u use it?

cuz ive heard some other ppl say it burns
and im curious

since i never use things like that
idk what theyre like
