biologics and antibiotics | Arthritis Information

I am on Enbrel and have had several infections that rd made me come off my Enbrel.  I had a tooth pulled day before yesterday and it is abcessing.  My dentist is putting me on antibiotics.  I had been planning on doing my Enbrel injection on Sat.  I do still have a cold.   RD office is closed so My question is - Can I take my Enbrel injections while on antibiotics?  The antibiotics do not run out for ten days and I really don't want to wait that long.  Thanks guys.

I figured you would have remembered from the last time you were antibiotics.

jooniper38758.5658333333I just got off the Enbrel help line.  The nurse said that you can take antibiotics with Enbrel but that is only if you do not have a serious infection.  She said that your rd should evaluate how serious your infection is and if you need to stop the Enbrel.  Now I am frustrated because my rd is out of town.  I know some people have been on Enbrel with antibiotics so I guess it is another one of those gray areas.

I would not take my Enbrel, since I could not get a hold of my RD. Just to be on the safe side. I was not trying to be rude or anything, just answering your question since I had my Enbrel phamplets sitting right in front of me on my desk. I thought I would try to "support" you.

If it were me I would not take my Enbrel until after the infection cleared up, but that is me. It could set you back if you did take your Enbrel and you got sicker, because you made the wrong decision.

Roxy You do not take enbrel when you have an infection!!!  I had an infection from a cut on my leg and was on antibiotics and was told under no circumstances was I  to take the enbrel until I got the all clear on the infection being gone.  You can end up with a worse infection if you continue enbrel.  Roxy this is no joke please wait until the infection is gone.  meme

ps hope you feel better soon!!!

Hi Roxy,

Is there an on call doctor that may be able to help? However, it is best to err on the side of caution. If you have an abcess then you are infected. Finish your course of antibiotics and call your doctor on Monday or when she/he gets back. You most likely have enough Enbrel built up in your system that a couple missed doses won't hurt.

Get better soon.

I have only been back on Enbrel six weeks

Up in the mountains this week renting Brett's place.  That will be a relief anyhow to live in ONE household.

one of those kids at school gave me this cold and no one will fess up.

Pat, Lack of sleep I think feeds the RA monster.  Whatever it takes, you have to get some sleep.  I get headaches too, may be from lack of sleep.  Do whatever you have to to get some sleep.  A lot of people criticize meds, but I take muscle relaxers to sleep and it really makes a difference the next day.  When is you appt.?  Wishing you sweet dreams.

Roxy, My appt is at the end of FEB. Have a great weekend

Hey Pat.  I don't know an RAer that is not always playing catch up.  Give yourself a break

Is it the same with Humira?

I havent been sick at all ...(**knock on wood**).... but I was sitting here thinking - if I HAD been sick - I wouldn't have called my RD - just my family doc.  I didn't know this.

I will add this to my list of questions to ask my RD.  Thanks.

woobie

it can be so confusing and sometimes i get mixed up....

I don't think it is worth the risk.  You could set yourself back for weeks instead of the time you are on antibiotics.  I can only imagine how frustrating it is for you, but get your infection cleared up first.  I hope you feel better quickly.

Hugs

Niki
