Resveratrol In Red Wine and Inflammation | Arthritis Information

Scientists from Scotland and Singapore have unraveled a mystery that has perplexed scientists since red wine was first discovered to have health benefits: how does resveratrol control inflammation? New research published in the August 2009 print issue of The FASEB Journal, not only explains resveratrol's one-two punch on inflammation, but also show how it - or a derivative - can be used to treat potentially deadly inflammatory disease, such as appendicitis, peritonitis, and systemic sepsis.

In this study, researchers administered an inflammatory agent to two groups of mice. One group was pretreated with resveratrol and the other group was not. The mice that were not pretreated with resveratrol experienced a strong inflammatory response, simulating disease in humans, while the group pretreated with resveratrol was protected from the inflammation. The scientists then examined the tissues of the mice to determine exactly how resveratrol was able to protect the mice from inflammation. They found that resveratrol used a one-two punch to stop inflammation in the mice by preventing the body from creating two different molecules known to trigger inflammation, sphingosine kinase and phospholipase D. This finding suggests that resveratrol may be harnessable as a treatment for inflammatory diseases and may also lead to entirely new resveratrol-based drugs that are even more effective.

WOW... and I really really miss my Red....
I used to enjoy a drop of th red stuff and still do today.
These days I just restrict my intake to one or two a month.
Glasses that is.
I have a bad history with red wine. I start off with one of the nice crystal glasses and end up a few weeks later just tipping the bottle and then going for another bottle. I just enjoy that drunken buzz too much. I sure wish they could find something medically good with Heinenken.

                                                  My fridge, help yourself

I love my red..... hate what it does to my teeth while drinking it.. but LOVE the stuff...   I was working my way toward becoming quite the connoisseur before DX and MTX.....  *sigh*

I could enjoy a Heiney here and there too!  thanks lev, I think I shall!!
Your fridge looks inviting Lev, I'll be over in a coupla days. Is it the alcohol or the red grapes?  Or perhaps a combo.    And! for not much more than our monthly rent we can buy it in pill form from any one of half-a-hundred miracle supplement marketers.

No wine needed.

I LOL, I agree Lev, that is a nice 'fridge!
I have been considering taking Resveratrol and after reading that report will check with my Doc and may take the plunge!
Costs around US monthly here..... not too bad I guess.

Lately I've been drinking a bit more red wine than usual and have been feeling terrific.  No pain whatsoever, no flares.  However, the pounds are beginning to come back, after I struggled 2 years to get my BMI in  normal range.  Now I'm getting mighty close to the "overweight" catagory.  Just can't win........ Resveratrol has antibiotic and antifungal properties in plants which produce it which might prevent free radical cells from damaging the body.
