Hi,I have been diagnosed with this since December 2005, has anybody else been told about the 'question mark posture'?
Prednisone doesn't seem to be working for me, I have had no weight gain in around 6 weeks.
What kind of weight loss have all of you experienced, I have lost around at least 2 stone.
I am 62, and this came on very quickly, whats the time span for recovery?

My wife and I are beside ourselves with worry, I have not been able to work for almost 3 months now.

Any help that you can give me would be great. Thanks.

I don't have your type of arthritis so I can't comment on it but I have certainly not lost any weight. Since retiring from work I have gone from being thin all my life (almost 6 foot tall and no more than 11 stone most of my life) to being overweight (nearly 14 stone) in a just few years because even though I don't eat much I'm very sedentary and don't burn off the little I do eat so the weight has crept up.

Thankfully I'm not grossly overweight and could still take weight off with even mild activity because I've always had a fast metabolism that burns a lot energy easily and quickly when I am active. In fact just before I retired I was extremely thin because I was so stressed and busy that I failed to eat properly and lost a lot of weight to the point of becoming gaunt and unhealthy looking.

As far as posture goes we all tend to become a little bent as we age some more than others. My neck where there is a lot of arthritis is much too forward and has been for many years and my spine has quite a lot of curvature so I have a kind of question mark posture. I have pretty much had it most of my life and it is not getting noticeably worse since my arthritis became bad.

Even though I have this curvature it is within normal limits and I was probably born with the tendency for my spine to be this way. It would only be of concern if it were so bad it was obviously abnormal and unhealthy and I doubt it will ever get much worse so I don’t worry about it.

As far as prednisone causing weight gain I think you would need to be on it a lot longer than 6 weeks to notice any weight gain as a result of using it. I once knew someone that had been on prednisone for years and he had put on very little weight so it isn't necessarily the case that you will noticeably gain a lot of weight from using it.

dragon38761.685775463Dani,
How much Prednisone are you on?
Prednisone usually does cause some weight gain but it may take a bit for you to see the effects.
Maybe you'll get lucky and not experience it but most do - I've gained about 20 pounds but then again my diet and will power has been pretty poor - gotta turn that one around.
Quite frankly I'd take the weight gain in trade for the "moon face look" which it also has a tendency to give you as another nice little side present.
I definately have to start an exercise program and see what effect that will bring.
If the Prednisone is not addressing your pain issues from the get go - I'd queston if your initial dosage is high enough - one of the diagnostic characteristics of PMR is that it responds virtually overnight to Prednisone treatment. Great news for the short term but not so good for the long haul side effects.
