Anyone taking Sulfasalazine? | Arthritis Information

Hi everyone,

I saw a new Rheumy today and like her so far. Very glad to move to a different rheumy. She is thinking of having me start Sulfasalazine along with my other meds. If anyone is taking it i'd love to hear how you are doing on it.

Do or did you have any problems/ complications with it?
How long did it take to work?

Thanks!! I've been taking sulfasalazine for a few years now without any problems.  When I first started though, I noticed that I started getting quite a few headaches.  But after increasing my water intake, they stopped.

I take sulfasalazine along with mtx and plaquenil, and it's helped slightly I guess.
Hope it works well for you.
Kelly
I have been on a Sulfasalazine/Plaquenil combo for over a year with no ill effects at all, and I am currently in remission. The first 10 months also included 10mgs Prednisone so my symptoms subsided pretty quickly most likely due to the Pred. (gotta love that stuff...)
My wrists and shoulders have been uncomfortable lately and I need to use tools to open bottles and cans again. But that is a small thing! I function at 90% so Im very happy for now.

I hope Sulfasalazine works for you too. Good luck!
I took sulfas. along with mtx and placquenil for a long time without any problems; I understand that those who hve reaction to sulphur-based drugs have to avoid it tho. the rheumy discontinued it and I can't remember for just what reason - but am on Celebrex now.
Hope it works for u!
Kelly, I've been on Sulfasalazine for several years with no complications or side effects.  When I started SSZ I also started Humira and increased MXT by 2.5 mg. and I did great on the combo.  My RD prescribed SSZ as an additional DMARD due to Psoriatic Arthritis.  Hope you do well.  LindySulfasalazine was the very first DMARD I took. It worked well for a long time but after several years it slowed. At that point I switched to Plaquinel.

I've never used it in combination with any other medication; which I hear from our other friends here is the way to go.

The only thing I hated about it was those huge round pills. Very hard for me to swallow.
I have been taking it for about six months along with predisone, paxqunil, and i just started Embrel. My biggest problem is GI side effects. If I miss a dose I have a lot of problems.Thank you everyone!
