i wanna lose weight | Arthritis Information

so u ppl know how ive been trying to lose weight

i had stopped eating as much as before
and i was doing exercise

well, after i hadnt lost a pound, i started slipping back into old habits
meaning, i still count my calories, making sure i dont overeat
BUT i dont do any exercise

i really need some motivation
maybe its just hard to lose weight, cuz of the prednisone
maybe it'll come off easy once im done with that
but maybe not

i just get so upset
like today, i noticed on the scale
i GAINED 3 pounds!!! i feel so hungry everyday, how the f*ck am i gaining weight???
i dont feel full, but its still slowly going up, not as much as before, but still goin up

does anyone have expierence (i spelled it wrong) with losing weight while takin prednisone??

or can somebody try to motivate me, im so frustrated/upset wah

im deffinately NOT going to be bullimic and binge and purge, thats a icky eating disorder, and im not doing that. so, what should i do?

ive tried everything possible, that i can do. obviously i have a sorta hard time picking what i eat, since my parents do the grocery shopping...

ugh, why cant this be easier??????????????before I met my husband, he was quite heavy......  He went to his doctor, who told him that he knew of a sure fire way to loose weight...
J was excited...  wow.. a sure fire way to loose weight!

Yes, said the Dr...

push yourself away from the table.

Translation....... eat less....

but exercise is really important to go along w/ that.

You don't look fat, Star.  Your face may be a bit fuller because of the pred..... but that will go away when you stop it....
Plus..I think we look heavier when we have alot of inflammation..

Good luck
eat smaller more frequent portions throughout the day...usually 5--6 times.  Breakfast md morning snack, lunch, midafternoon snack, dinner, after dinner snack if necessary.  Eat somuree kind of protein at each meal..it keeps you feeling full longer.  Eat whole grains, fruits vergetables, low fat milk and yogurt.  Check with your dr but you should not drop your calories below approximately 2000 calories per day ( 14 yr old males need the calories to grow upward too ).  Fiber in the form of oatmeal, leafy vegetables is important as well in order to keep digestion working properly.
Watching portion size is veyr important...measure everything.  Avoid fast food or minimize it.  Even at McDonalds or Wendys you can find healthy lower calorie choices.
Exercise is even more important when you are on pred...pred causes the bones to lose density and now is the time you should be building it...try walking..build it up slowly.  Put away the computer now and then and find something else to do.  Do you have access to a WII...Wii fit is a fun way to get moving.
Star,
You can also keep a log of what you eat and drink for a couple of days and see how many calories  you really eat/drink.  I know I really underestimated how much I ate until I started keeping track of it.
you have a swimming pool, right?  Can you swim?  You are on the computer A LOT, maybe trying to incorporate more exercise in is the key.
You have to decrease your food and increase your exercise.  It can be done, even on pred.
Good luck.
Phats

am I feeling de ja vu?  didn't we discuss the log and all that before...????hang in there Star,  Most of it will go away after pred. ends.  You will still need to lost, but all that puff in your face will go away.  and it will be easier to lose, because you won't be hungry all the time.  have they cut it lately?  I know how you feel, I been on it twice, not an easy drug.
am I feeling de ja vu?
Its like deja vu all over again to quote Yogi Berra. Its like deja vu all over again, all over again.

It has also be suggested, more than a couple of times, to use the internet to find reasonable, nutritionally balanced meal plans rather than simply count the calories of carbs and fats: mac and cheese for lunch and pasta with Alfredo sauce for dinner is not reasonable and certainly is not nutritious. Not all calories are created equally.

If you, starPerson21, would spend some time looking at your other topics where diet is the focus, there are many suggestions for eating healthy and controlling weight. Motivation should begin with a conversation in which you and your parents discuss nutrition. Purpose, direction, and goal all parts of motivation. Outline your purpose, what direction you have chosen to take to put that purpose into action and how you plan on reaching your goal and have that outline in hand when you engage your parents in discussion.

To living well and eating better!
You said you joined at Sparks didn't you? That website has awesome tools to help anyone lose weight and get in shape. There's no easy way to do it. I've lost 18lbs now with the help of that website. . I exercise....but not that much. Not saying it's not nessesary; but you don't have to kill yourself on an exercise bike for 60 minutes a day to incorporate some activity. Your a child! Go ride a bike outside with your friends. Play basketball.....Swimming. It's summer. If you have a pool utilize it.

I find it hard to believe that your Mother and Grandmother aren't helping you plan nutritious, balanced meals knowing that's what you what want to do and also knowing that you have dibetes. Nutrition has to be factored into your life style now.....hopefully not for long; but likely for the rest of your life.

I know predisone makes you hungry. I can eat like a horse while taking that stuff.....but you're going to have to find nutrious snacks that won't ruin your whole day. It is possible.

Start entering the things you eat into the nutrition log at Sparks. Review it after a few days and examine what you have. I'm sure there are a few things you can eliminate from your day that are adding fat and calories.

No one here is going to tell you an easy way to do it Star. You know why? Because there isn't one. For the record; no one here thinks you're fat anyway. I understand being young and worrying about what other people will think of you. We've all been there....but don't let it get out of control. That can become a big problem.

Also; no one here would ever suggest anything as stupid as binging and purging. That's just rediculous.
Yes pred will make you hungry. Also high blood sugars will make you hungry. On the same note it is hard to lose wt when on insulin. Been there. Watch the carbs and lean more toward protien. Exercise will help your RA and it is a proven fact. Even if it is just 3X/wk. Just do it. Oh I know. I was in tears about going back on the prednisone. Well I was in tears about not being able to walk so I went with the prednisone. I promise you when you get off of the pred your hard work will pay off. If you are gaining wieght. Have you gotten any taller? You are a growing young man. I would expect a little wieght gain from that. As I remember you are at the age when growing is really fast paced. We all need some support when on prednisone. It is a rough road to travel alone. I guess be glad you did not gain more wieght than you have. Starperson please go messure your height. Just for kicks it will give you one more thing to do. Also I would suggest that you follow a diet designed by your doctor. That is where you need to get your advise for your nutrition. You have different needs than us older people that are not still growing. The raise in your MTX may have you a bit out of sorts. Give yourself time to adjust. You will be back excersising in no time. I think we all cry over the wieght gain from the prednisone at one  time or another. You are not alone in that I promise you. Also with excersise you may not see imediate results but when your muscles reach a certain state they start burning off the wieght on there own. You have not been at this long enough to reach full benifits. So cut yourself some slack and try try again. Ask your doctor for some help thats there job. Make sure you are getting enough calcium for your bones to grow and what not. Come on Star! What is it you really want from everyone? You continue to post that you want to lose weight and on the 6th you posted you had a "tummy ache". Then you listed this gosh awful amount of pancakes you ate for breakfast and then had lunch. I think you want attention and love to whine. What 14 yr old says they have a tummy ache? None that I know. I don't think you have JRA or diabetes.

I, for one, think you have found a place to take advantage of caring people and I think your time is up. I am all for helping someone but Star you don't sound like any teenage boy I have ever known or been around. What teen boy would chose "Star" anyway? A girl maybe but a 14 yr old boy-don't think so. You keep coming up with the same topics over and over. If it got a good response you use it again.

As for your you mom and grandmother, if they are as you say they are, social services should be called because you are not being properly taken care of medically. IF you are really sick, which I don't think you are, the way they allow you to eat is endangering yourself and you need to be under close supervision. You need to be removed from this home.

Without a doubt, you must not have made it very far in school due to the fact that you speak as a 1st grader and write about the same.

This is where I come to the conculsion that you are a total fake and you need to find some where else to spend your time. We are all way too sick to put up with a smart butt teenager with nothing else better to do with his time.
Time for you to go.
so from what ive figured out, the most important parts of EVERYONE's posts r:

1. eat smaller portions
2. exercise
3. its hard to lose weight while on pred, so dont be discouraged
4. it might take a long time

and to say:

yeah i have a binder, that i mentioned a while back when i started my "diet" i was listing everything i ate, and the calories. then i'd add it up at the end of the day, sometimes it would be less than 2,500 calories a day, sometimes it would be over 3,000.

so i decided im gonna try monday, mondays seem like a good day to start something. its the begining of the week, ya know. so, i figure that'd be the best day.

TOBEPAINFREEAGAIN- ur such a super meanie, u dont have to hate my screenname being StarPerson121. i like it. same reason i chose it for my youtube account name, back in february. its AWESOME.

and speak like a 1st grader? wtf, ur so mean. i write awesome stories, which i had put a link to my blog, so some of u ppl saw them, and i had almost all A's on my report card, so i aint a dumb*ss.

if ur gonna be mean, i just will ignore u. but, u didnt have to be SO mean, i think u overdid it...

ANYWAYS thnx everyone else for ur support, i know i shouldnt have expected to lose weight so quick, but school is coming up and im super worried that ppl r going to bug me, then im gonna be embarassed. when i saw my school friend, at Friendly's last tuesday, i was so embarassed i didnt even wanna say hi to her. its a BIG deal for me...

so thnx everyone. u ppl r awesome.

First of all...you do NOT speak for me, so please refrain from saying "we all" in your rude reply to Star.
Second...if you are too sick to put up with this teenager (and who asked you to?) then why on earth are your reading and replying to him?
It is a big deal to all of us. You are a school kid WOW that is a big deal. Do not let the fact that we are grownups fool you. We have all eaten too many pancakes while on a diet pred or no pred it happens. I think that just makes you human.
I am starting to wonder the same thing.  In fact, I'm wondering if it isn't our resident neediest poster under an alias.  I think Star is seriously lacking attention at home and can get a vast amount of it here.  He is getting PM's and has numerous posts dedicated to him.  Only, he is asking the same thing over and over again.  Personally, I'm ready for school to start.
Ok Tobepainfreeagain, your post was not the nicest.  If you look at his videos you will see that he has the traditional moon face from prednisone.  So I think he definately has JRA and prednisone induced diabetes.

He is a teenager who does not belong on an adult JRA board and I agree, he is bored and craving attention and that his posts are repetitious.  That is why I have stopped responding.  It is simple as that, let the people who want to talk to him do so and if you dont like his posts dont read or respond.

I also agree that his Mom needs to be a little more involved in his care but maybe as his Mom she understands him the most and realizes the bigger a deal she makes of things makes it worse because Star does seem to be a bit of a hypochondriac.

Once school starts he will be occupied and wont be posting as much.

OK maybe I was too mean. It just seems to me that there is something just not right with the whole thing with Star. I have gone back and reread his post and TO ME something just isn't right.
I was only speaking in general of "all of us". It was my opinon that I was giving. My fault to think that every person with RA is sick. I know I would rather read things from suffers than from someone that has been given great advice over and over from the people here and still does the some ol' thing and keeps asking the same questions.
As it has been said so many times here, I will not be responding to him anymore.
What I love about this site is everyone is allowed the own opinon and this was mine. I am not a mean person in fact I am a very caring person. I never should have posted due to feeling so bad yesterday. I still stand by my post but I do agree I could have done it in a kinder way-my bad.
yeah, once school starts, i'll barely be here

isnt that awesome for u ppl!!

i wont be here ALL day and only some nights!

lucky 4 u ppl
so from what ive figured out, the most important parts of EVERYONE's posts r: FYI, StarPerson...

As you learn you then need to teach your parents how important healthy foods are for your overall well being and future status as a healthy, well fed, well nourished young adult.

Certainly eating healthy is easier to say that to do. But doing soon becomes second nature when you are determined and dedicated to feeding your body sensible and with restraint.

Ask your parents to buy you carrots, apples, raisins, and date4s to munch on and fresh in-season and/or frozen fruit to snack on and learn to fix soft boiled or coddled eggs instead of all those refined carbs for breakfast. Skip the ice cream cup and learn about the pleasures of a ripe mango, nectarine, peach, or papaya. Skip the ravioli in al fredo sauce and relish a salad of mixed greens, topped with turkey, ham, or even pepperoni and cheese accompanied by a slice of garlic bread or garlic toast.

If your parents indulge in junk food, it does not necessarily follow that you need to. Speak frankly with them about improving your diet in a effort of gain firm control of your blood sugar and assist your body to deal with JRA.

You can DO IT.
And another example of the good information that has been provided to you..
[quote=Topic:

what should i eat???]
Star, tomorrow have eggs for breakfast, with *one* piece of toast with some jelly on it.  For a snack, an apple cut into pieces with some peanut butter.  Lunch, a sandwich with turkey, cheese, and a big pickle on the side.  Snack, a banana and a piece of string cheese or some cottage cheese.  Try and not eat a lot of starchy foods like bread or crackers or chips or pretzels.  Drink a lot of water.  Exercise as much as you can, situps or running in place or just walking up and down the stairs a few times.  Check your blood sugar, have your mom check it, a few times.  For dinner eat some meat that isn't tucked into pasta, like a hotdog, if you like baked beans cut up the dog and heat it up in the beans.  It really is the bready stuff that's going to run up your sugars.  If you feel bad during the night please wake up your mom or dad and ask him or her to check your sugar, ok?  Prednisone's rough on us in a lot of ways and it is bad for blood sugar but there are ways to help keep your blood sugar from getting out of control.  Snack on a piece of cheese.  I know the Pred makes us crave starchy sugary stuff, but trust me, if you eat something that isn't so starchy or sweet and that takes longer to digest, you'll feel better in the long run!
StarPerson, there are literally dozens of other posts from members who expressed concern for and about you. It is time for you to accept at least part of the responsibility for eating healthy.

The ball is in your court, as they say, and you either will or you will not. The choice is yours.
Spelunker, are you bored this morning?  five post in less then an hour, and your repeating yourself,  hope this means you are feeling better and getting bored.  I amire you for the way you eat and take care of yourself.  It would be good if we all follow your diet.  Some way or another I want more.  I eat the health food, then I eat full meals  (meat and potatoes) It is sad what we put in our bodies.  You have a great day. Bored? Not at all, I can honestly say that I am seldom bored, sick, well, or anywhere in between. You actually counted my hourly post count? I don't even do that. I simply respond where I feel like it, and yes I did repeat myself, repeat myself, repeat myself to StarPerson21. It isn't the first time, and probably will not be the last.

You have a great day as well. So far mine has been superb, even forced to languish in bed.

Cheers, best wishes, and salute! Shug

Spelunker, I amire you, you alway make the best of whats going on.  I should have known your not bored,  me yes, I need to get a life...lol  I gusse I come in right after your last post and it still was early here in the west.  glad your day is superb.

I don't want to make you feel bad but I've managed to go from 250 to 214 and I'm on a pretty high dose of prednisone too.  For me the trick was to cut out a lot of the fast food I had been living on.  I know this stuff tastes good but the trick is really moderation.   I like McDonalds and giving up the sweet tea from there has been hell for me but I just keep trying to remind myself it will pay off in the long run.  Of course the real downside is that since I'm on prednisone if I don't keep a tight watch on things...it will all start to come back and fast!  Maybe if I can get the dose down more it won't be so bad then.
Don't give up..it's often slow going at first then you lose a bunch of weight and level off and will mabe gain a few pounds back before losing more.  The point is to not get discouraged.

Bob
Hi Star,

I have a teenage son who is struggling to lose a bit of weight also.  I'll tell you how I am helping him make good choices.  Today I packed his lunch for school - he started last week.  I packed a spinach salad with diced roasted pork loin (3 slices of meat because protein helps stave off hunger), a skim milk mozzarella string cheese stick (calcium also helps with hunger and growing bones) and a few fresh peeled carrots to have something to crunch and to have something to nibble on.  He will have water to drink (ice cold).

After his after school snack of frozen blueberries and roasted almonds he will head to the gym for 30-60 minutes.

For dinner I am preparing turkey dinner sausages cooked in the oven over many cans of drained green beans.  If you prick the sausages with a fork before putting them in the oven at 450 degrees some of the turkey sausage juices drip on the green beans and flavor them.  This is one of his favorite meals and one of mine also because it is so easy!  If it sounds good to you then mention it to your Mom.

Good luck to you.

but his mommy only makes stuff thats yummy in his tummy tum tum.  Little baby doesn't like to eat veggies because they're icky.  Boohoo. thnx bob, and the other person right below bob

good advice, i cant believe that bob person, lost that much weight while takin prednisone. it seems so hard.

and the person below bob, had good advice too, so thnx.

and U Henrietta, u sure do luv posting on my threads!! im sure...
I'm trying to gain wt. and still eat healthy.  Not easy. .this morning, small blueberry muffin,  shoestring potatoes, water. (should have been milk)  for lunch I'll have a loin chop on bread (1 slice dry mouth) with mustar, pepsi and potatoe.  snack same as yesterday, radishes, peaches and grapes.  supper will be a tv dinner. snack popcorn or ice cream.  I'm eating more then I ever did and don't gain.  Year ago I was over wt.  Wish it was a healthy lost,  The wt lost is cause from illness and I look sick and boney.  We don't seen happy no matter what our wt.  I just wish I could feel good again.  Could do better, if I felt like cooking and cleaning...Rusty...my husband is the same.  He's been wanting to gain weight and it just doesn't happen.  Doesn't matter what he eats, he just doesn't gain any weight.
He's actually going to see a dietician this week with a list of everything he's eaten in the last few days.  Maybe he/she can come up with a plan for him.
Kelstev, if they give him any  good tips let me know.  My doctors keep asking me if I'm eating....LOL,  they said I need to drink milk shakes and eat more protein.  One thing is I have trouble eating anything dry,  like breads, cookies, cake and sometime potatoes unless I have lots of gravy with them,  I do like mac and cheese.  melted cheese over fried (use oil to fry) potatoes. I eat a lot of cheese.  I do drink 2 or 3 pepsi a day and lots of water.  I keep a bottle of water with me 24 hours a day.  Rusty you want to gain healthy muscle not unhealthy fat.  Adding carbs and sugars like pepsi is not the way to go.  Think about adding things like protein shakes a couple of times a day instead of those pepsi's.  You'll have about the same amount of calories but loads more nutritionI've recently lost 53 pounds -- and yes, i was on pred for most of the 53 -- I joined weight watchers, stopped fooling myself regarding what i was eating and not eating. Started eating healthier -- lots more fruits and veggies and way less protein and fats. My niece joined with me and has only gained weight. Why? She's not "working the program" and continues to "sneak" foods that are bad for her. There is no magic bullet. And yes, you CAN lose weight on pred. But no more alfredo sauces -- and way more salads, fruits and veggies.
