Down to 5 mg pred and hurting. | Arthritis Information

I have been doing pretty good on 7.5 mg pred.  In an effort to get off this med or get it down further, I dropped down to 5 mg a couple of days ago.  I am pretty miserable at this time.  I feel like I have the flu, my face feels warm and has a redness to it.  I have a sore spot between my shoulders that hurts when I move or try to turn my head.  I am achy from the waist up.  Is this pretty much what to expect when we get down too low on pred?  I was trying to hold out to see if I get better with time but I think I'm going to have to go back up to 7.5 mg.  One reason I'm trying hard to reduce the pred is I had a bone scan recently and it shows some thinning of my bones.  I am taking calcium with Vitamin D and my doctor has now started me on a weekly dose of Alendronate to try to counteract the bone loss.dalton, yes, that certainly sounds familiar, what you might try is swede's method of tapering, do a search on what he does successfully.  i have toughed it out with nonsteroids,  but yes you will feel the difference.  he alternates with new dose, old dose, makes sense entirely to trick body into accepting new dose. do not try to change too soon to a lower dose, also, your body is not accepting the lower.  keep at a dose that you can tolerate for a longer period of time before tapering.   just what has worked for me, but evryone is a little different. Welcome Dalton     at least this is a great site!

Sounds like you are too low on Pred. Maybe not ready to go from 7.5 to 5. When this has happened, and Yes, it seems to go this way as we go lower with the doses! Some one a lot brighter than me worked it out by %s.
I used to go back to say 7.5 for another month and then try again, but by alternating days of 7.5... 5....7.5..5..ect and do this for 2 weeks. If still comfortable then go to 5 but not before. I was at 5mg for 12 months before going to 4 and I am now adding Plaquenil and recently Methotrexate trying to get that comfortable feeling back! Now in my 4th Year! and with a wedge fracture.

I understand your wanting to get off it..  but you are taking Pred for PMR and its not an easy disease to control. You are doing what you can to build up your bones ect.

How long have you had PMR? Its no fun feeling miserable, flu like and achy pain anywhere. Do you take any pain meds? How about giving your Dr or Rheumy a phone call / or appointment , for advice. If these are  new symptoms for you , Your Dr needs to know, please get some help.  For now Hugs Lyn
Thanks, Lyn, for the advice.  I am feeling some better today.  Still can't turn my neck very far with a lot of stiffness in my shoulders.  This is my second bout with PMR.  This one has lasted about 6 months.  If I continue to get better, I will stay on the 5mg.  If not, I will try your suggestion to alternate back to 7.5 mg.
DaltonThanks Cowgirl.  As I said to Lyn, I will try alternating if my symptoms don't continue to improve on the 5mg.
