My 22 year old son informed me he is joining the US Army. He has already tested and is working with recruiter... I went and met this recruiter...they both described the process to me...I also found out he tested for the Marines a few months ago...They wanted to sign him...I am in shock...I am, and always have been proud of my son...but honestly I am shocked...I want him to do what he wants and feels he needs to do...but the ARMY...oh my...this so much to process...thanks for listening...

Best Wishes,
Lisa

LisaOnline2009-08-13 13:29:34 I can imagine what a jolt to the system this must be for you, but as you have mentioned, he must do what he must do.

I can only offer my thoughts that he remains out of harms way and that jolt which you are feeling at the moment turns into pride.
Bodak2009-08-13 13:52:13My son is in the army and he loves it. He is so happy its where he wants to be. I provides job stability (which is not good where we live), It is exciting at least with what he does. Most of the kids from his graduating class joined and are currently military. He has been home for 1 year and cannot wait to go back active he is miserable. So really if thats what he wants let him go enjoy life and support him lisa. My son is also 22 and wants way more then he can get here around our town. The military is not a bad place to be. He will learn self respect and loads of other things.  My son fought hard in 9th grade he weighed 365 lbs, he met someone who got him interested in wrestling so in september he asked the wrestling coach could he join the team, of course he was to heavy but they said come workout with us and we will try to get you matches with other heavywieghts when the time comes. The weight classes started at 270lbs and below. He worked hard 5 days  a week for 3 hrs everyday after school and he also did tikwondo 3 evenings by jan 1st he wieghed 279 lbs ( now dont worry he had seen a doctor who had given him the go ahead) He started wrestling and hasnt stopped the next school year he was wrestling in the 215lb weight class. I took alot of hard work he also played football his junior year and during that summer between 10th and 11 th grade he lost his gallbladder and under the permission of the surgeon 2 weeks after surgery  was playing tackle football. He lifts weights runs 5 miles a day now even though he is back up to 260 in weight. But I am proud of him, honored to be his mom and will back him and support him no matter what, especially with the army because he likes it there as he says thats where he belongs. He was one of those kids from a very early age that you knew he would be in the military and he is and proud

Hi Lisa!  I'm the proud mom of two United States Marines.  One of them was like Doob's, he's loved the military since he was a little boy.  The other one surprised us when he joined, but both are happy with their decision, and neither has any regrets.

I'm glad you're supporting your son in his decision to join, that'll mean a lot to him.  I understand that it's scary to see your son join up during a war, please tell him thank you for being willing.  And thank you for raising such a young man.  And if you ever want to talk....I am here.  :)

The United States Military IS the MOST honorable profession one can have. I hope he does what ever makes him happy.

I can only imagine what you must be thinking. Especially since it seems that he's been exploring this for a while with no notion of it to you. I know this is hard for you and I hope you find peace with his decisions.I can certainly understand your reaction and the difficulties in beginning to process all this. Like Linncn I congratulate you on your son's ability to take this step and your son on his decision. I would also like to thank you and him.

Best wishes. Shug
Thanks for the responses...I am proud of him. I should of wondered why he has been running 5 miles a day...He hasn't worked out so hard since he was a wrestler in High School...He has some college and he gets credit for this as he enters the Army. I am proud of him. I must admit I believe he will be a wonderful soldier. I just have to believe that he will be safe. I know he will be sent overseas...He is excited about serving our Country...It just come after my daughter and her husband with my BEAUTIFUL baby boy grandson relocated to Florida...she is a teacher with a special ED endorsment and her husband a police officer...We are going to retire there and I have 3 trips planned before the first of jan...just hard to believe they are all moved and now my son...sigh...
I have discovered the joys of SKYPE, my daughter puts the laptop infront of my grandsons high chair or bath tub and I have dinner with him or talk to him while he is bathing...it is SO much fun...he can hear his Grandma and SEE me...I can't wait until Sept 11, I fly down for 10 days...his birthday is the 13. He will be 1 year old already. I have posted his pic in the past I will post recent pic in the future.
Thanks guys for your responses. Makes me feel better to kinda just put it out there...

Best  wishes,
lisa
Skype is the BEST!!  I can actually sit in my kitchen and see/talk with my son in Iraq.  Crazy.  Well I am proud of your son. It is a great deal for a Mother to process. The best of luck to both of you. Military parents,
thank all your children for me, such courage. Makes my heart warm.
