Raspy Voice - Non Smoker? | Arthritis Information

Curious if a raspy voice is a symptom of early RA? My voice has been pretty raspy for the last few weeks  (not sore, just  kind of like when you get up first thing in the morning and your voice is a little "deeper").  It stays this way throughout the day. For the record, I'm a non-smoker which keeps me leaning towards this being a RA symptom.

Thanks for any insight.

I have never heard of a raspy voice being connected to RA.  Hopefully someone else will pipe up with other insights.  I do know that GERD, thyroid problems and a whole host of other problems can be the causes of raspy voices.  Good luck getting to the bottom of it.

Cricoarytenoid arthritis can cause changes in the timbre of the voice, however it is usually accompanied by a feeling of fullness in the throat and/or a signs. If your rheumatologist is unable or unwilling to diagnosis, I strongly suggest you seen an ENT for evaluation...sooner, rather than later.

ETA: a quick WWW search will bring more information re: cricoarytenoid arthritis than you might wish!
Spelunker2009-08-30 17:15:13I complained of a raspy voice/sore throat upon waking and a feeling of something "catching" in my throat to my RD back in CO. She told me there is actually a joint in your throat that can become inflamed. Can't remember the name of the joint though...I get an RA sore throat that kills.  Figuratively.  Really it just hurts a lot.

Tech, I can't say where, but I'm sure I've read that RA can cause a rsapy or hoarse voice.
techzit, i have developed a raspy voice over the past several months. I have developed nodules on my voice box from severed Gerd and now...LERD. If you are a refluxer, you may want to have your voice box checked out.Go see your doctor.  I can always tell when a friend's thyroid meds aren't working properly because her voice becomes raspy.... Cricoarytenoid joint, often abbreviated as CJ. An interesting case study can be read >>HERE<<.
When I flare my voice gets what my DH calls "whispy"  its weak and sort of raspy.. it happens when I get sick or real real tired too..just don't forget while you are going through this that raspy voices are sexy and everyone knows it.
