fluid in stomach | Arthritis Information

Does anyone know how you would know you have excess fluid in your stomach. I have been bothered by a bloated belly which I blamed on prednisone and my dr. said the same. But now I am not on prednisone and it is still bloated. I tried cutting out artificial sweetners and all the salads I eat thinking it might be gas- still bloated.

Now I just happened to be reading the insert that came with my MTX and it says inform your dr. if you have excess fluid in your stomach...how would you know? Would it cause bloat?
I mean I showed him last visit and he palpitated it and listened to it and said he can find no reason. he suggested going off the sweeteners and cutting out roughage but it didn't do anything.
Have you seen your PCP? Free fluid in the abdominal cavity can usually be palpated; excess fluid in the abdominal tissue is also palpable. However, in you situation it would be wise, methinks, to get a second opinion.

Meanwhile, all I can suggest is to reduce salt, increase fibre (although your dr. advised the reverse), add a high quality probiotic, and do some research on "diuretic diet".

I would -think- that excess fluid in your stomach would cause bloat, but that is more a guess than a 'for certain'.

To better days!
Excellent advice snowowl. Abd bloat can be a first symptom of ovarian tumors. Please be checked ASAP.

Thanks all- I do have a gynecologist appt. already scheduled for the 19th. It's my annual appt.  I do have trouble with fibroids. I had a myomectomy and edometrial ablation in 2006 but at my last exam Sept 07 he did say I had fibroids again- this was just with an internal exam. I do remember him describing something as being the size of a so many month pregnancy-can't remember how many months. However my belly was not this bloated then. Also my bloat starts at rib level- I don't think fibroids would bloat up there would they? The ovarian thing has crossed my mind....I had thought I heard belly bloat could indicate ovarian cancer...

I'll definately address this with him and if he finds nothing it will be time to see my GP.

WTBRF, some advice, just from experience of taking care of women with problems. Please insist that your gyno do an ultrasound of your ovaries. Many times, problems are not picked up by a palpation exam. Lots of insurance companies will not pay for an ultrasound, some will. It may be a few hundred dollars out of your pocket, but you will be able to sleep at night knowing nothing got missed. Insist on it. Thank you for the advice lorster- this has been concerning to me and my gut tells me you are right to pursue it fully. I'm going through the same thing, except I have had severe pain in my very lower right pelvic area. I'm not on mtx, just the Enbrel. I have started taking a probiotic because of chronic diareahha and have also made an gyno appt. I think it's a ovarian cyst. I'll let you guys know. Wtbf please keep us updated.Allymom2009-09-02 13:37:05WTBRAF, an update, please. GYN said it's probably peri menopause spreading of the girth. He says because I am there yearly and I am not complaining of pelvic pain he does not think Ovarian cancer. He knew exactly where I was going without me even saying anything. He says by the time your stomach bloats with ovarian cancer it's stage 3 or 4 I can't remember which he said...
I have a GP appt. early November- I will ask her as well.
Meanwhile I have been exercising for at least a month 3 x a week with no result.
Thanks so much for asking!
Wannabe, good news! I think it is wise to ask your GP for her input as well.

It is, unfortunately, true that with a change in hormonal patterns the shape woman's bodies do alter and often those changes cannot be reversed. I despaired over the deepening, prominent "Venus rings" on my neck, but once I accepted they were there to stay, I also accepted that they were a sign of the richness of my life and although my physical fertility was past, my emotional and mental fertility was/is flourishing.

Surgical intervention for reshaping physical traits has becoming a booming marketplace and many women who are disillusioned with their aging bodies opt for surgical make-overs. I admit to remaining vain enough that I would like my eyes done.

Cheers, Shug
ROFL After walking out of his office and standing in line to check out- I looked at the other women in line who were all about my age and yes- we were all thick in the middle.....
Wannabe will have a hard time growing old gracefully. I am very short and have always had a "youthful" appearance. Until RA hit I felt mentally and physically like a 25 year old (at 45). I find this very hard to accept but little by little...you have to do what you have to do.

I will continue to exercise and hold out for the GP who may tell me there is a magic pill to unbloat my belly. Looking pygmy like is bothering the heck out of me!
you better share if you hear of the magic, wantto!!!!! You know I will Babs!
