O?T Plasma vs LCD TV | Arthritis Information

Hi guys, I am purchasing one on Weds - would like to hear your opinions if you feel like giving it, thanks Janie. Hey Janie,

I just had to replace my tv and I got a plasma- absolutely love it! The reason I chose it over the LCD was because we noticed  the LCD tv's unless you upgrade to the 1080p & 120Hz, the picture was not as good when watching things with a lot of motion. My husband watches a lot of sports so it was a factor. Those tv's are more expensive. I love my picture but the downside I heard about plasma's are that they do not last as long as LCD. You only get something like 60,000 to 100,000 viewing hrs. out of them. LCD's are not much better. This is truly a throw away world we live in.  :(
Hey Janie,
We have an LCD and Plasma. Now days, I can't really tell a big difference in the picture, esp in the 1080s. I do know that the bulbs used to be very expensive to replace in the LCDs, but they are much more reasonable now. The LCDs last a lot longer also, from what I have been told. If I am not mistaken, when the Plasma goes out, you have to buy another tv, but the LCDS you can replace the bulbs (someone correct me if that is not right.) Hope you find what you are looking for. Good Luck!
Plasma tv's have a glass screen as well so this makes the weight of them greater than an LCD plus adds the factor of glare at different viewing angles in there as well.  I also believe that most manufacturers are beginning to phase out plasma tv's in favor of the cheaper lcd screens.  I have a 52" Samsung lcd in my living room that is 1080p with the 120hZ refresh rate that I love.  It weighs only 60 pounds!   I don't watch much sports on it but that is another thing too.  Plasmas will have a better look with fast moving programs because of less motion blur but all in all I'd recommend the LCD.

We have two plasma monitors that are terrific, however the weight is a factor and as Bob points out they are slowly going out of production.

Both our monitors are wall mounted and we have talked about replacing both with LCD monitors. We do not have tv receivers, so our monitors are for watching DVDs (and the monitor in the bedroom uses a computer for watching DVDs, when I am bedbound that 50 inch monitor becomes my computer screen. Gotta love it!)

Whichever you decide on I am certain you and your family will get great pleasure for it.
We just bought a 42" LCD after comparing it with everything on the market and love it.  But then we're looking at it through 60 + year old eyes and those differences between LCD and Plasma we don't really notice at this age!!!  I do love the LCD and have watched more movies in the last 6 weeks than the last 6 years.  LindyOne thing for sure, neither seem to last very long.  My husband repairs these TVs and it's nothing to see them needing repairs after 2 years...certainly not like the old crt tvs that last for years.
We have 1 plasma and 2 LCD...I prefer the plasma.

Interesting post! Hubster and I were just out looking at TV's today. I'll share with you what I was told. Plasmas do better with the fast stuff like sports and racing via the refresh stuff Bob was speaking of. Plasmas suck ALOT of energy compared to LCD's. Plasmas have a beaUtiful picture. LDC's are excellent to but just can't replicate the color of LCDs. Plasmas don't last as long. Plasmas are heavy and have glass vs the matte LDC screen (is that bad though? my current TV's have glass) With LCD's you need to look at the processor, need at least a 120 (this is what gives you your quicker refresh rate) there's a 240 processor that's even fast than 120. Pixels, need 1080. Also, the guy at Best Buy did say that you can get screen burn on the plasmas if your TV is left on too long on the same station and it has like a Fox logo steady in the bottom corner; is this true? Or did the guy not know what he was talking about?

CheeseTVWe bought a 42 inch LCD tv about four months ago and we LOVE it.  Pay attention to the numbers though they are important.  Pay attention to the Dynamic Contrast Ratio
that is important too.   We bought the LG brand and the picture is just brilliant, be sure to stick with the 1080.  Have fun!

We have done a fair amount of research and I think when we can afford to buy one, we are going to get the Panasonic Viera Plasma.  The posted reviews are fantastic on it.  we have a 42 inch samsung plasma and my daughter has LCD in her room, I prefer the plasma, it seems to have a lot more definition but it is a very heavy tv.
Kel, my uncle repairs them too and also says the same as your husband.
I work with a techie engineer. We had this exact conversation last year when our old tv died.

He said. LCD always. He's had both. Despite the weight of the plasma, if one of the little dots goes black that's all you can focus on. Apparently the pixely things (sorry I'm not at all technical) often goe in the top right hand corner first. They cant be repaired.

We bought a 37 inch LCD Phillips with big numbers, hubby and son wanted to go the full 42 inches, but after the old tv we'd had before, I'm still thinking that 37 is too big, oh yes and the bigger the numbers the better.

After an analog tv anything digital is fabbie.  Good luck.
it is a very heavy tv.
Yeah, they're pretty heavy.  My husband ended up making the wall mount for our 52" Plasma...saved us 200.00 plus that tv isn't going anywhere...the mount he made is strong and solid...much better than what we could ever buy.
IDK compared to our old CRT tv the plasma doesn't seem heavy at all to us. We have ours on a TV stand. We prefer it after watching TV at homes with mounted tv's. It seems easier on the neck.

edited to say ours instead of out- what is my problem?
wanttobeRAfree2009-09-07 20:05:06Hi guys, well, thankyou for allyour input, I took it all on board and we decided on the plasma as the price was too good to pass up, 0 for a 42 inch Sanyo!!!  We have opted for extra warranty for an extra 0 for 4 years more, so total warranty period now 5 years!  I am very pleased with myself and hubby is pleased with me and the boys think they are at the movies!  Hugs Janie.
We just bought a 42 inch Panasonic Viera Plasma.  1080.  We love it, it is the best picture I have ever seen.  High def is truly joyous, especially football and golf.  In my opinion you can not go wrong with the Viera Plasma.
