Women only question... | Arthritis Information

Sorry if this is a little graphic but have any of you on prednisone or methotrexate had problems, irregularities, or extra heavy periods? I just started low doses of both drugs and have had a heavy period for what I usually have and has lasted literally 10 days ( normally only 4 days for me)and now it's just stopping.

I wondered if any of you women have experienced anything like this?

Not sure if I should mention it to my dr or if it's just another annoying side affect.

Thanks      About 15 years ago I was on several short courses of methylprednisolone and finally an injection for a harsh case of tendonitis.  It stopped my period for about 6 months - my OBGYN finally gave me a 5-day course of Provera to "jump-start" the plumbing.  When I was taking pred regularly a couple of years ago, my periods weren't extra heavy, in fact they were extra light but went on for days and days and days.  Seemed like they would never end.Not sure how old you are but when I was 45 my periods began to get so heavy I became anemic. It was due to fibroids and I don't know... age?

I had an endometrial ablation and myomectomy which did the job until now I am 49 and it seems to be happening again.
I am on MTX and just recently got completely off prednisone after being on it for almost 2 years but I don't relate it to that.

I was thinking the same as wanttobeRAfree.  I was about 44-45 when my periods started becoming longer, heavier or just didn't come at all for a few months.  I had one that lasted 4 months and also became anemic.  I've been told that most likely this is all age related for me.

I'm taking mtx...no prednisone.

In my early 30's I started having extra long, heavy, and very painful periods. Eventually I got to the point where I bled continuously for 10months. My OB/GYN tried all kinds of hormone pills and shots to get the bleeding to stop. In the end he decided I needed a hysterectomy. It turned out that I actually was experiencing a uterine prolapse.
I know this has nothing to do with mtx or pred... I just mention it because we RA gals can also get 'girl problems' separate from our RA problems. Thanks girls   I did end up calling my Rheumy, she said it could be due to prednisone or could be stress and I sure have been under tons of stress lately. Jeeze, the things we girls go through!  I guess I'll just watch it and bring it up at my next GYN appt. Everyone seems to kind of have their own unique story. I'm 34, I did read something about right before mennopause your periods can get heavier and more irregular but I hope I'm way off from that for now as my husband and I still one day want to possibly have a child.

thanks so much!
Kelly, I am on prednisone (only 5 mg now - started at 20 mg about a y ear and a half ago), 15 mg methotrexate, plaquenil, and blood pressure meds.  I have always had heavy periods so that is why I am on birth control pills.  I haven't had any trouble being on the pill and taking the other meds.  If things don't get better you might see if you can try a birth control pill.  Good luck.

My period became scant and long when I started MTX and when I went off of MTX. When I was on Methotrexate I had an almost constant, heavy period.  After stopping it because of other side effects, my cycle went back to normal. I know it was the Methotrexate, even if the Dr wasn't sure.
