RA in Jaw? | Arthritis Information

Hi All......My right jaw is swollen and painful AND I have lost my hearing in the right ear.  It is not my teeth, so I am blaming RA.  Does this ring a bell for anyone?   Rrrrriiiiiinnnnnggggggggggg. My personal encounter began with an increase in the stiffness and dysfunction of my jaw, a problem that seemingly started after being intubated for a surgical procedure. The stiffness evolved to the point that it is nearly impossible to open my mouth wide enough to adequately brush my teeth. I had an appointment a couple of weeks ago with the pain doctor and had the left side of my jaw “injected”.

There was GREAT and nearly immediate relief of the stiff-jaw symptoms after the injection. According to the physician, this initial injection is expected to provide relief for 2-3 months.

Our rocckyd has have surgical intervention for RA in her jaws. She bravely detailed the procedure start to finish, well maybe not to finish, but through some of the aspects, positive and negative of the surgical procedure.

The hearing loss is a concern...maybe a visit to your ENT is in order.

Best wishes, Shug
I also get this in my jaw.  It's hard to even get a toothbrush into my mouth when it's acting up.

I've never had the hearing loss though.
Yes, I get it in my jaw, one side or the other  frequently. Mine usually lasts about 3 days and then disappears. But, it is painful enough to where I cant close my jaw to eat food...usually stick with soft stuff on those days. Sorry you're feeling so bad, I'd definitaley call your doctor about the hearing loss. I visited a neurologist last year about dizziness...he asked if i got ringing in my ears and wanted to refer me to an ENT . There are autoimmune diseases that can be serious and cause hearing loss he said if you get frequent ringing in your ears. (sorry not to scare you, just FYI)Hi....Thanks for your responses!  I also received a PM message as follows:
Yes, when I have swelling in my jaw, even just a little bit of swelling in my jaw... I have loss of hearing in my right ear. It's not really lose of hearing, it is that everything is muffled really bad to the point that I cannot hear well. And most times the only thing I can hear in that ear is the inflammation moving around when I talk or move my jaw around.
I have been to the ear dr before when I kept having a hard time hearing, but that was way before my RA got really bad. This was a couple of years after I had my daughter, when my RA was working on getting to the point I am now. They did a lot of hearing tests and I passed them all. But I still could not hear out of my right ear very well. Ear Dr never could figure it out.
But now, that is what my RD says it is from and I believe her as when my inflammation is down I do not have the muffled sound in my ear and can hear well.

[/QUOTE]I sure have had the jaw thing but never lost my hearing. Hope ya feel better ...

Big yes to Ra in the jaw.  I have had hearing issues and been dizzy as well.

A regular dentist won't be able to help with real jaw issues.  You are going to need to see an oral maxillofacial (spelling?) surgeon. We'll just call him an OM.   Ra has pretty much eaten both sides of my jaw.  I have had numerous arthrocentesis (where they flush out the joint) and a bilateral arthroplasty.  The OM went in and removed diseased tissue and scar tissue.  You really want to do as little to the actual joint as possible.  Still having problems and a very limited opening.  I go down on the 30th to get a consult from a OM at Duke Medical Center.  He is supposed to be very good....we'll see.  My rheumy and the rheumy I saw at Duke both feel that a jaw replacement may be necessary.  This is apparently very uncommon.  Glad to be special!

If your jaw is bothering you, find someone who can help you out.  You don't want damage to occur.  You don't realize how much you use that joint until it hurts.
I get it in my jaw a lot. I can't close my mouth all the way to chew(hate that). But never any hearing loss. Hope you get some advice on that soon!
