hip replacement | Arthritis Information

hello everyone. iv got a few questions about a hip replacment if anyone who is still active on here can answer. im 21 so im hoping my healing time will be fairly short but ya never kno. anyways after surgery how long will it be before im able to drive again? i only drive a 5spd and would like to be able to resume that as quickly as i can. will i be able to sit indian style? its something iv never been able to do so doing that would kinda be an accomplishment to me i guess. what should i expect after surgery as far as range of motion?

thats all i can think of atm but if i have anymore ill post hereI'm 28 and have had both knees and hips replaced as well as both ankles fused. I was 14 when I had the left hip replaced and 15 when I had the right one.  From what I can remember, the healing time was fairly quickly, the only thing that took some time was the physical therapy and getting used to moving it after surgery.  When I was able to drive, I had no problem with it at all. There are only a few things I can't do, like, I can't sit indian style, ride a horse (due to spreading the legs apart that wide can cause dislocation), and squat.  For the most part, I'm pain free and haven't had any problems with my hips. My knees on occasion however, will still build up fluid and have to be drained.  Hope this helps and if you have anymore questions, let me know!!   Hip replacement surgery requires relatively prolonged immobilization which can lead to deep vein thrombosis. I didn't mean to scare you. But wanted to highlight the importance of getting out of the bed as soon as possible.

madu2010-06-24 23:30:23Hi there,

The first two weeks after the surgery will be most delicate, however in most cases, normal everyday activities will resume in 3 to 6 weeks... You will probably still feel a bit of discomfort and fatigue at first. These are normal after hip surgery.
