We are starting our flu vaccination programme today ...

First cab off the rank is health care providers, pregnant women, people with respiratory health issues & people who are obese.

Note ;  the Australian Vaccine is still not considered safe for children -- so no child under 10 will receive the vaccine until all the testing has been completed & approved.

Maz-aust2009-09-29 20:28:00I was wondering whether it worth it to have one myself. why people who are obese..being fat does not put you in an at risk group for the flu.  Some people with comorbidities may be at higher risk for complications but that does not apply to the obese population as a wholeHow would I know Buckeye ---
I am just reporting what is !!

Hi Stephen,

I can't have one anyway but my guess is now that our flu season is over we have time to think about it and maybe target next winter!  ???

I'm assuming you're talking about H1N1 and not regular seasonal influenza.

Buckeye - it seems that obese folks seem to be hit harder by H1N1:

"Obesity a Factor

Obesity has been observed to be one of the risk factors for more severe reaction to H1N1--something never before seen, Kieny said. It's not clear whether obese people may have undiagnosed health problems that make them vulnerable to this stain of flu, or if obesity is a risk factor in and of itself.

On Friday, a team at the CDC and the University of Michigan reported that nine out of 10 patients treated in an intensive care unit there were obese. They also had unusual symptoms, such as pulmonary embolisms and organ failure. None of the patients has recovered and three have died."

Thanks Jas, yes I was talking about Swine Flu Vaccinations

Thanks for the explanation though, I haven't been following any of it.

Hi Maz-

Have you heard anything on how those h1n1 imminizations are going near you? Any problems with the shots?

KellyOnly released to medical providers on 30th Sep --- too early yet for any reporting to come through.

Will keep you posted though!

H1N1 vaccine has been in trials in this city for a couple months now targeting infants and children. Pregnant women can get the shots in Australia, but not approved for kids? Sounds strange (but I believe you!)Yes it is true ... over here it is still not approved for children under 10, & I think I heard somewhere that the foetus is protected intra-uterine.

My guess is it depends on who's vaccine you are using, they do differ.

As I said it doesn't directly affect me because we can't have it (my family).
