The site, http://www.nature.com/nrrheum/journal/v5/n10/abs/nrrheum.2009.182.html , requires registration to read the article in its entirety, but even the abstract has some heartening information:

and unmet medical needs remain. The quest for better therapies for this
potentially devastating disease is still as important as ever; research
in this exciting area is ongoing, and it is reasonable to hope that,
during the next decade, developments will lead to improved, rationally
designed, targeted therapies for RA.[/quote]
That statement could have been made in 1988 when I got this. I remember seeing statements just like that. Sad part is we will see the same thing probably in another 10 years.
