I am supposed to start on Methotrexate tommorrow. I will be taking the SQ injections. Anyone on this? stupid question...alot of you are, so come on, dish...I need to know side effects. I read the insert and I talked to my doc. and I have a drug book that tells every possible nasty effect that could scare me off...but  I want to know how it really is. Is it going to make me sick? I am kind of scared....

HI

I've been taking the stuff for 8 years.   Nothing.  I'm lucky.
I tolerate it very well.  Never had the nasea...never had the mouth sores... nothing.  Well, the ony thing it has done to me is changes my periods... I skip a lot of periods now... (NOT complaining...)

Just make sure you take the folic acid every day ....   that will help you not get the mouth sores.

Hope you're lucky like me...... and it doesn't do anything to ya.  Don't be skirred from reading the inserts.. they have to tell you all that - to cover their butts.

The shots don't even sting.

GoOD LUCK!!
woobie

I hope so too...I am pretty nervous about it---esp the nausea, I hate feeling that way I didn't like it. Sorry to tell you that..  It made my face all dry, the skin was just so flaky gross. I kept getting yeast infections you-know-where. No mouth sores, thank goodness. I did take folic acid daily. Mostly, I was just exhausted all the time. I look at pictures of myself and I was just a ghost. I looked so sickly. PdxLiz38769.5532060185

HEY CRUNCHY, I'VE BEEN ON MTX FOR QUITE AWHILE NOW AND I'LL GET A HEADACHE ONCE IN AWHILE AND SOME THINNING OF MY HAIR. I'M AN OLDER GUY SO I'M NOT SURE IF IT'S MY AGE OR THE MTX THAT CAUSED THE HAIR THINNING. I COULD HARDLY WALK DOWN STAIRS AND I ACHED ALL OVER BEFORE TAKING IT, BUT I CAN DO THE STAIRS LIKE A NORMAL PERSON NOW. IT TOOK 2 TO 3 MONTHS BEFORE IT KICKED IN FOR ME. I'M NOT ENTIRELY PAIN FREE NOW BUT I DONT SUFFER TRYING TO GET OUT OF BED AND I CAN CLOSE MY HAND INT0 A FIST.

I'M IN THE PROCESS OF MOVING RIGHT NOW AND I'VE PACKED 82 BOXES SO FAR AND I'M NOT SUFFERING THE NEXT DAY SIDE AFFECTS.

WOULD I TAKE METHOTREXATE IF IT WAS OFFERED TO ME TODAY????.........HELL YEAH!!!!!

GOOD LUCK TO YOU,

                             DON

I've been on MTX for about 14 years and haven't really had any problems until the last few months.  MY white blood cell count has been low off and on during the last year, but other than that, I've not had any problems with MTX.  I was very worried about taking it in the beginning, but it's really helped me over the years.

Mine are pills though...25mgs

Good Luck!

I AM ONE OF THE ONES WHO CAN NOT TAKE IT THEY TRIED THE ORAL I WAS NAUSEAS EVEN AT A LOW DOSE SOON AS THEY UPPED IT MOUTH SORE DIAREHA EVEN ON 5 MG FOLIC ACID THEN THEY TRIED THE INJECTION I HAD A TERRIBLE STOMACH MOUTHSORE LIKE A BAD HANGOVER ANYWAYS THEY TOOK ME OFF IT ABOUT 6 WKS AGO AND NOW WE ARE TRYING NEW STUFF PS I STILL HAD FLARES AND PROBLEMS ON IT.....TERESA

I've taken MTX orally for I guess 4 years now. I have done very well on it. I can't remember what my starting dose was; but it was much lower than I take now. I'm not at 25mg along with Humira weekly.

I've had to increase my dose over the years to get the desired effect...but it's been a positive experience for me. I'm usually very tired the day after and as I increase my dose I may experience some nausea; but nothing too serious. Certainly nothing to make me stop using it. It did take several months to get the full effect for me though.

Hope you're experience will be as positive as mine.

Have to agree with Lovie, (which I usually do) my exp. with mtx has been great.  no problems except for being tired the next day.  Almost refused to take it because of the side effects.  (sometimes the net tells you too much!)  It has really worked great for me.  Although, I have gone on remacade (2 mo.s ago) it was only because my RD really felt I should.  I think that mtx alone (with plaquenil) was doing a really good job with me.  Good Luck.

Hey guys thanks for all of the input. I started the MTX yesterday, I kinda wussed out though, I only did half a dose (6.5 mg injection). I think I will do the other 6.5 on Friday and then start the regular dose weekly on the following Friday. Tuesday is not  a good day to take it. It made me a bit nauseated so I figure I should take it on Fridays just in case I feel bad and want to sleep in. I have already missed out on enough work as it is.

Taking MTX for 4 years, continually upping dose about every other visit to doc, now 20 mg.  Also on Plaquinol and now doc suggested humira, but I called today to talk to pharmacy and they say Humira cost is 00.00, which my insurance company said It would cost me about 5.00, i don't think I can afford that so we will need to find another med.

I have been in really bad shape for the last 6 weeks, need to find something to work to get me through till sping time.

Crunchy

Taylor has been on it with subq injections for a couple of months.  Only thing she has had is mouth ulcers which the folic acid helps with and a mixture the pharmacist makes up called magic mouthwash.  Great stuff! Good Luck

Jackie~Maybe you could ask your doctor to try plaqenil like Mary takes? I did pretty good on plaqunil alone for years before MTX but I've never tried them together.

I'm on 25mg MTX & Humira weekly now. Humira has been good for me....but I HATE the injections every week. I chose Humira verses Enbrel due to the bi-weekly schedule; but that didn't last too long for me. After 6 months I had to increase the Humia. Doubled the dose to weekly. A little more than 6 month later and I feel like I need to do it again. I've felt this coming for the past several months...but I hate to admit it. It's a pattern for all of us I think.

I wish now that I had gone with MTX & Plaquneil for a few more years before starting these stupid injections. I'm not sure at this point where I go from here.

Just a thought.
