I sort of follow the Atkins diet.  During the week I stick to it pretty good.  Weekends I splurge on what ever I feel like.  Today I had an appointement with my GYNO and I had to pee in a cup.  So anyway my DR an older indian dude (i think) starting questioning me about my diet, if I was dieting and what I ate.  It appears I have ketones in my urine which he says is poisoning my blood?  He told me to eat every 3 to 4 hours and sent me off on my way.  I googled it and understand the whole process of Ketosis which is the object of the Atkins diet,  burning fat for energy instead of glucose.  I'm just wondering about the poison in my blood thing, and if this ketosis is a smart thing to do to my liver on top of the MTX?  I've been taking over a year now.. Wouldn't posion in my blood show up in my labs?Hi Bonnie, these are really questions for your doctor and/or rheumatologist.  I can post all kinds of articles with the pros and cons of the Adkins diet.

I personally don't believe that strict dieting in any form is good for us, especially since we're already stressing our bodies with dmards and biologics.  I do believe in portion control and the Mediterranean diet.  I don't adher to this way of eating in hopes of losing weight but for it's anti-inflammatory properties and how it makes me feel.  I feel much better eating this way; no added sugars, all fresh and grain fed meats, lots of vegetables, fruits, lean meats, olive oil and spices.

You need to discuss this further with your doctor.  Lindy
LinB2009-10-13 20:33:54I had to google this one. I did not realise that the Atkins Diet could cause this. Everyone is different. Sometimes in life we find out that something we want to do does not agree with our body. I would still want some further testing after you stop the diet just to make sure that was the cause. milly2009-10-13 21:01:19Answer to if it is a smart thing to do to your liver. No. Not everyone that is on the Atkins diet is going to get this same effect in there urin. You are more sensitive. There are certain people that have to eat every three to four hours to prevent poisoning themselfs. That is why the doctor suggested that to you. It is not good for your liver and probably not so good for your kidneys. Give your regular GP a call and talk it over with him. Well I guess it depends on what you read. LOL Some say it is alright. Usually only at the start of a low carb diet after switching from a high carb diet. Maybe the fact that you are going off of the diet on the weekends is adding to the problem. It sounds like you have been on this diet for awhile. I tend to be a worrier. Really it probably best to check with your GP and make sure it is the diet causing this. Ask your GP if it is safe or not. I am just surprised that they did not not order bloodwork like bloodsugar and thyroid to make sure that it is from the diet.
