weight gain help | Arthritis Information

As many of you I was really concerned about the weight gain being on prednisone.  And the increase in my Blood Pressure.

I have found - for me- that cutting out sugar and flour has been the answer.  No more craving and eating way too much.  I have lost 8 pounds in the last month and generally feel better.

Eating good protein and all the vegeys and some fruit is working well.  Seems that on prednisone the sugar /carb cravings were awful- I was always hungry and thinking about food.  Since cutting out the simple carbs I feel sooo much better, and the weight is coming off.

My BP is down as a second blessing.

Hope this offers some help to others.

Rosey

Rosey,

You are a courageous soul! Do you cut out all sugars and flour? Can you give my pea brain an idea of what you do allow yourself for some kind of treat? How soon after you do have the forbidden foods did you note you felt crummy? Hey, are you surrounded by food at work with lotsa pot lucks and the like?

I admire you for 'just doing it' and not looking back! I need to quit talking about it and join you..........but right now I hear a Lindor Truffle calling......

I did lose some weight going off Prednisone, but have quite a bit to go.

Hopalong-

Yes- I am abstaining from all flour and sugar.  White flour- allowing maybe one piece of high fiber ww bread in the morning or noon and no high glycemic foods after that.

I recently was hospitalized with a heart 'scare'.  My 'wake-up' call.  It becomes much easier to eat right when you have one of those.

I am basically following the South Beach Diet- phase 2.

When I get hungry for sweets I have been having the sugar free jello with a dallop of whipped topping or a n apple or pear.

After you stop sugar - and it isn't easy-you actually stop thinking about it and are satisified with an apple.  It's just that getting it out of your system that's hard.

I am addicted to sugar and need to realize that and abstain if I want to be free of it's power over me.

A friend gave me the book: WHY CAN'T I STOP EATING.  That book changed everything for me and really helped me clean up my act.  She talks about food addictions and it's power over us.  I was on every page.

Eating this way I havelost 2 " off my waist and being on prednisone you tend to add belly fat.

I'ma  home health/hospice nurse so am not in the office too much to be tempted thank goodness.  But have to say now that my mind is set I am not having trouble being around 'bad stuff'.

I recently tried Weight Watchers but was always hungry because I was using my points to eat the carbs that I craved but that didn't relieve my hunger- so I was always feeling hungry on that program.  But it does work for many.

Good luck-Rosey

Rosey,

Thanks for your suggestions. I may try to give it a go. One thing I want to be careful of, and avoid altogether, is eating anything with Aspartame. I find it interesting that there is a warning on the 'Equal' boxes that say not to use if prone to migranes or have a seizure disorder. I  know some people who have had problems with it, especially Diet Coke addicts. They just don't want to give it up, however.

The warning on the box leads me to believe that this product is NOT good for the nervous system! I guess you could liken it to the warning on a cigarette pack!

What do you think? And anyone else who reads this?

Hopalong

I agree!  It is a stimulant to me.  I have been drinking diet sodas with splenda instead and find that works fine for me.

Diet rite has a new white grape diet drink and it's sweetened with splenda.

Rosey

Rosey,

I think I'll keep an eye out for that soda......is it pretty tasty? Many diet drinks always left a metallic taste in my mouth, anyway.

I sure hope Splenda doesn't have any side effects. It sure does cost lotsa $$$$$$$$ if you just want to bake something with it!

Thanks again for the tip!

Hopalong

Diet Rite - White Grape drink is very good- no metallic taste but is is pretty sweet tasting. I found it at Target.

As soon as I mentioned The White Grape drink from Diet Rite, I no sooner turned around and my husband brought home a 12 pack!

I will have some tonight and let you know what I think!

Hopalong

Rosey,

The Diet Rite Grape Drink is great!! Thanks for telling me about it...it also doesn't have the sodium and caffine which is just as helpful!

Hopalong
