Any Thanksgiving plans??? | Arthritis Information

Once again, the holiday season is upon us. Anyone have any special plans this year? Gonna try any new recipes? This is the last year we will be in this big house. Putting it on the market in early spring. So I'm going all out and decorating and having a big dinner for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'll miss it but what lies ahead is exciting. I would love to hear what others are doing this year. This is the first holiday season in 4 that we've been in the states and both holidays will be spent with our families.  We're off to Boise, Idaho for Thanksgiving with my son and DIL.  Christmas will be spent in Las Vegas with my DH's family.  We should be having some fun times with family but we're really missing our tropical home, especially since it was 28 degrees this morning.....way too cold for my poor old bones.

I love to cook Tday dinner and since we're settled in our house I decided that we'd cook Thanksgiving dinner next weekend for just the two of us.  All the fixings:  turkey roasted with apple/sausage stuffing, mashed potatoes with turkey gravy, brussel sprouts with pancetta and shallots, pear salad, fresh cranberry sauce and pecan/cranberry pie and maybe a pumpkin pie.  No special recipes just my old Tday standbys.

I just ordered a wreath and garland for the house.  My decorating is pretty understated, lots of pinon pine greens, silvers, a little red here and there, a tree decorated in red and silver and a beautiful centerpiece in the dining room and lots of candles.  Not too much trouble to do and take down but enough to be festive.  DH always puts up outside light on anything that doesn't move and I guess he'll do that again this year.  Our RV had lights outlining it when we were in Mexico.  One year he even put Tim Allen to shame!!!!  We have to trade off years, one year it's white lights and the next it's his colored lights.  Compromise you know.  Lindy

Lori, am glad you've go some exciting things happening in the future.  Life should be exciting and adventurous.

Your thanksgiving sounds like fun.
We are having a busy christmas as usual. Lin I laughed when i read about putting Tim Allen to shame...my husband is the same, if it stands still he puts light on it..lol...
We have all the traditional things at christmas, turkey, stuffing, roast potatos, yorkshire puddings, roast vegetables, with christmas crackers  and lots of bad jokes..

YUM, Yorkshire pudding.  I miss my grandmother's.  Yes, we'll have the bad jokes, the usual family drama and laughs.  They're are a ton of nieces and nephews in Las Vegas so they'll be lots of kid's noise and laughter.  I think we have 16 nieces and nephews between the age of 3 to 19 years old.  It's always fun, I have a great time with the kids but it's does mean I have to shop for each of them for Christmas gifts.  Not going to get their mom and dads gifts but will get each one of the children gifts and cart them all to Vegas.  I see lots of girly girl purses, jewelry boxes and books in my future shopping.  Lindyit will be a quiet one this year..i'll go over to my brothers but he is having serious neck surgery next week so we are keeping the holiday low keySuch wonderful plans!
What is Yorkshire pudding?
Buckeye, I'll keep your brother in my thoughts and hope his surgery goes as planned and his recovery is swift.
My FIL is coming to CA to visit and we will be going to the desert for Thanksgiving Day. I've already informed my DH that the day we get back or next day at the latest, Christmas decorations are going up! I've been waiting all year!! hehe

Mel , yorkshire pudding is a traditional british side dish that goes with a roast dinner

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yorkshire_pudding

Buck eye, I wish your brother a  safe and speedy operation and recovery

Lin I have 4 nephews and 3 nieces, 3 children, hubby, myself & my mother for xmas dinner and then in the evening we have DH family coming for a buffet...7 uncles and their wives and 4 of their children and grandchildren. We only see them once a year because of distance, and as we are the closest to London we all meet up here...i dont mind as everyone brings a plate of something and a pudding, i just have to provide the seating....lol
Thank you..I'll pass on the good wishes

we have yorkshire pudding every Christmas with our standing rib roast
So it's the doughy things in the picture? I envisioned more of a bread pudding type desert.yorkshire pudding is very similar to a popover if you ever had thoseSpending the Holiday in Florida....with guess who?.....................
yes GAVIN.
Honestly I am so excited. My heart aches at times, I miss my daughter and Grandson.
My parents who also live in in Florida as well as 2 sisters. So I will be seeing them all.
So excited.

My parents are in their 80's. My father is 82 and he has a FB account. He set it up all by himself. I was so proud of him. I got him started on the FarmTown game and he now is an avid farmer. It is a hoot. He will call me and say Lisa can you harvest for me.

Anyhow that is my plans for Thanksgiving.
Everything sounds so tasty!   Waddie, yes, you do have lots to celebrate and you should.  He'll get in the spirit once he sees how happy it makes you.  It's contagious!!  Here's the recipe, not the amounts just the contents.  I don't know the amounts I just put it together.

1 package of good pork sausage, cooked and drained.
2 medium apples, diced in small dice.
4 or 5 shallots roasted till nicely browned and cut up.
Celery diced.
Onion diced but not too much because there are shallots in the recipe.
A loaf of dried bread of your choice, bought or homemade.
Melted butter.
Seasonings of choice.  I use salt and pepper, thyme and sage.
Lemon zest of 1/2 lemon

Mix all together, add stock to moisten and stuff the bird or put in baking dish.   Enjoy, it's really good.  Lindy
sounds wonderful lin..i have put that into my recipe book

My friend gave me a recipe for a throw together chocolate cake, i posted it on here before but i have now substituted the malteasers for a mint aero ( a mint chocolate bar) it is so yummy
8oz marg, mixed with 8oz castor sugar, add 3 eggs beaten and mix with electic mixer. Add 60gr instant hot chocolate powder, 6oz self raising flour and 10 ml baking powder and mix again with electric mixer. Crumble 1 large aero chocolate bar into the mix and stir. pour into cake pan and bake on gas mark 4 for 1 hour. I serve mine warm with vanilla ice cream
My 85-yr-old father has had a rough couple of months...bullous pemphigoid which required pred which led to heart and blood pressure problems, which caused a fall where he broke his foot (and his urethra!)...and those are just the "highlights".  Six weeks ago I thought we were going to lose him.  He just got home last week and is in a wheelchair, so we're all coming to him and to make things easy on everyone, bringing one of those supermarket thanksgiving dinners.  My mother will still make a pie and my husband will make some other dishes to go with everything, but sometimes it's better to just take the easy way and be thankful we're all together. Suzanne, its the being together that counts the most.xxJust got word that my stepbrother will be in town for Thanksgiving, and that it will be hosted at my house this year. Yikes!  I guess I've got some cleaning to do!!! pinnie..what is malteasers and castor sugar?? [QUOTE=SnowOwl]Everybody's plans sound wonderful.  <drooling>

My husband's napping now, of course his night at the hospital wasn't exactly resful.  I think I'll be joining him soon, I'm starting to feel like a puppet with its strings cut now he's home and snoring

For Thanksgivng, right now I have extra reason to be thankful and to prepare to research tasty food that's lower salt and lower carb and lower sugar and it will taste like manna to me because I still have the #1 reason for loving life.

Any good, healthy recipes suggestions?  I'm all eyes and ears!

I was just looking at this site this morning

The usual.
DH, me and the kidlets.. then our son  (the kidlets dad) his ex wife, and her mom.. at least.. maybe DD and her guy.  Son and  X's  relationship is...odd to say the least. I never know if shes staying over night.. Oh well...anyway.

Turkey, stuffings (2 kinds) mashed potatoes and gravy, salad, 2 or 3 hot veggies.. ( green beans, peas, squash and apple casserole, relishes,  dinner rolls, appetizers for the early part of the day.. cheese board, bread bowl, fruit tray, deviled eggs. olives mustn't forget the olives. Cider, coffee, milk, koolaid. ( secret revelation here. We drink Koolaid at nearly every meal, and always at supper.) Pies.. apple, pumpkin, mincemeat, pecan. ice cream, fruit, jello, pink fluff.

We eat buffet style since the table only seats 6 and then there is no room for the food.
I have a new folding table that I will set up in the LR or the front hall room. its too big to be called a foyer, but it doesnt really have a name.

 yum....
Kathy, I think I want to come to your house! Sounds like enough food for an army! My oldest son, wife and three kids are coming down and I'll be cooking the turkey for the first time in several years. I'm really excited about having them because they haven't been here in ages. That son is building a major addition on their house in Seattle and they are constantly working on that. For Christmas, I'll take the train to Seattle - in case we have a blizzard like last year - and stay with my daughter, her hubby and two kids. She'll be doing the Christmas dinner for all my kids (3 + spouses) and their kids (7), my sister and her son. It's a great group when all together and I just love it! I especially like that my kids all really like each other and get together just for the heck of it sometimes. Makes me feel like I did something right in raising them! They are special. I might try the apply stuffing that someone posted - sounds good. We do a very traditional dinner - and, like Kathy, we don't forget the olives! Hope everyone has a wonderful time! We'll be heading down to NC to have Thanksgiving with our son's and their wives and extended families, plus our little granddaughter.  It's a change, we always do it at our house with my brothers and sister and their fams.  We'll do a second Thanksgiving here after we get home, just cuz we'll miss continuing that tradition.

Snow, I'm so glad you fella's home now.  It's always so easy to count your blessings isn't it.  Probably something we should all do more of, huh?
Well, we've gone from a turkey to two small breasts to roast.  We only eat the white meat so why buy a big bird.  Everyone's dinner sounds so good.  Lindy Small turkey
Stuffing (NOT cooked in the bird - ICK)
Some sort of salad
Green beans
Corn
Mashed potatoes
Biscuits

Apple pie
Ice cream

Rol-Aids

Coca-cola Tums makes those extra-soft melt-in-your-mouth ones, right?  Those rock.  The main reason I stick with rolaids is because they have calcium and magnesium, so it's a two-fer-one.  But I agree, Tums usually taste much better! [QUOTE=Mrs Pincushion]sounds wonderful lin..i have put that into my recipe book

And that sounds good to me Pin! I am a sucker for chocolate.

Here is a wonderful recipe for a hot chocolate fudge pudding...easy to make and ideal for cold weather.

Chocolate Self Saucing Pudding

50g butter,1 cup flour,2 teaspoons baking powder, 2 tablespoons cocoa, ½ cup sugar, ½ cup milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla essence, ½ cup brown sugar, 1 tablespoon cocoa, 1 ½ cups boiling water, Icing sugar. Melt butter in large saucepan. Sift flour, baking powder and first measure of cocoa into butter. Add sugar, milk, vanilla and beat until combined with a wooden spoon. Pour into a pre greased four cup oven proof dish. Mix brown sugar and second measure of cocoa together. Sprinkle over batter in dish. Pour boiling water over back of spoon onto surface of pudding. Bake at 180c for 35-40 minutes until pudding springs back when lightly touched. Dust with icing sugar ( optional). Serves 4-6.

You can add 2 tbsps peanut butter to the batter if you wish! The cake rises to the surface with a lovely chocolate sauce underneath. Is easily doubled. I have been known to eat leftovers for breakfast.

I have allrecipes on "speed dial" Lynn.  It is a great site for any time of the year!!

Nice topic.... We will  get together with my mom and dad, my sister and her family, my brother and his family, my son, and my kids and hubby.  My oldest son, his wife, and my two grandsons will not be there (they live out of state)    Their absence will surely be felt and missed terribly.   I love Thanksgiving but I like Christmas even more.
Teedoff:  why do you celebrate Thanksgiving in October?
Lori
Nice topic...   we get together with  the whole family except my oldest son, his wife and my two grandons will not be there, they live out of state.   Their absence will surely be felt.

sorry for the duplicate

Lyndee, I could have done without that recipe but since you went to the trouble of posting I may have to force myself to make it.[QUOTE=tinkster42]Nice topic...   we get together with  the whole family except my oldest son, his wife and my two grandons will not be there, they live out of state.   Their absence will surely be felt.

In Canada we celebrate Thanksgiving the second Monday of October.  Once upon a time I knew why that was but brain fog has taken over.  I'll have to look it up on Yahoo.

Lindy...if you love this pudding, I have a gorgeous Butterscotch one that is similar and a Lemon one that seperates into a souffle type top with lemon sauce underneath. I have a surfeit of Meyer lemons always, and they get made into lemon syrup, marmalade , curd and this pudding. Just delicious!! And easy to boot! Lyndee...carry on posting those recipes....yummmmmyLyndee, I'd do just about anything for a big basket of Meyer lemons.......please post your recipe for the lemon type souffle.  I may make that for Thanksgiving.   I can get Meyers in Reno at Whole Foods, maybe next weekend when I go in to shop.  I had several Meyer trees when I lived in California and I could eat them right off the tree.  I love sour.  When I moved from Ca to NV one of the things I missed the most were the Meyers.  LindyHere ya go then! I usually double this recipe and use a larger baking dish. ( same for the choc pudding above, it will overflow if dish too small)
I have C&P'd this recipe from Allyson Goftons recipe site here in NZ. It is the standard recipe I use, just saves my fingers today.
Any type of lemon will do, but Meyers do have heaps of juice and are not as bitter as some lemons.
Hope you can find some Lindy......some of mine rot on the ground there are so many, and nearly everyone has a tree so no giving them away .

50 grams softened butter
grated rind two large lemons
1/4 cup Self Raising flour, sifted
1/4 cup lemon juice
1/2 cup caster sugar

2. Gently stir in the flour, milk and lemon juice.
3. Put the egg whites in a clean bowl and beat until they form stiff peaks but are not dry.
4. Fold the two mixtures together and pour into a well-greased 3-4 cup capacity oven-proof dish.
5. Bake at 160°C for 30-40 minutes in a water bath until the top is golden and firm to the touch. Serve hot.

ETA: PLEASE NOTE I HAVE AMENDED THE FLOUR...IT NEEDS TO BE SELF RAISING.
LyndeeNZ2009-11-17 01:57:31Thanks Lyndee, on my menu for next week.  L Ya.....once we had been out in spring season & took many clothes & favors for our beach children's gifts we found lots of accessories too & our trip were also enjoyable.
