Aqua-therapy anyone? | Arthritis Information

I remember a few folks had suggested aqua-therapy and I was wondering who currently participates and what type of experiences you have had. My friend who is in her mid 60's has OA and osteoporosis, as well as Polymyositis and anti-Jo-1 syndrome. The latter is heavy stuff that many people die from. She is lucky to live near a place that has 3 indoor salt water pools.  Her biggest problem has been inflammation in not just her joints, but her lungs. The swimming, which she does for about 45 minutes 7 days a week, has been a godsend for her. She doesn't go for speed - it's all about endurance. Her pulmonologist said that she's got the best breathing of anyone with a lung condition in his practice. They believe the swimming and deep breathing are responsible for her recovery.

If I lived closer I'd do it.

So I say go for it. The trick is to go during a time when the kids aren't there [germs].

Too bad these things are not tax deductible.
Sam12342009-11-12 13:51:47I am so interested in pursuit of this once more... I loved it when I did it.. but pool time is expensive...and hard to get in when the place isn't jam packed when you work....
this is another "check it out" thing on my list.

I was to have started aqua therapy 3 weeks ago but always manage to find a way to procrastinate.  It is every Mon., Wed., and Fri. at 8:30 am and there are not too many attending at that time.  I have a punch pass so if I don't like it I do not have to go.  Should be interesting.I did aquatic physical therapy last year for a few months (as long as my insurance covered it and then some time after that on my own) and I had mixed feelings about it.  It did help my back a bit, and I was happy to be able to do some kind of exercise.  However there were plenty of times it made my ankles or knees worse (not just for a day or two).  Because of the warm water, I didn't always know when to say when it was too much.  I've been thinking of trying it again if my insurance will cover again in January.  I'd recommend that anyone who has the opportunity to give it a try, just be careful not to overdo.I don't do a therapy program but an aqua exercise program a couple of times a week and I absolutely love it.  I flounder around, exercise, kick up my heels, laugh at myself and actually have a good time while increasing my stamina.  Give it a try, you might really enjoy it.  Lindy
