My son? | Arthritis Information

Just thought I would feel you out here...my son, who is 14, recently has had 3-4 bouts of joint swelling. 3 times his knees, and once he had a sore hip. This has all been in the last three months. He is a very active competitive hockey player, so there is no doubt he could have been injured, (except one time when he was off hockey for 10 days and it happened). He has been seen by the doctor twice and there is swelling, inflammation and lots of pain in the joint.
The doctors all think this is tears to a tendon. I ask about my RA and my Father's reiter's syndrome and the doc says, she doesn't think so. She gave me a blood work requisition anyway, but said it's just to please me. We also had XRays done. What concerns me is every time, the pain completely disappears within 24 hours and he is back to playing high level physical hockey. One day he cannot get into the car or go up the stairs, the next he is fine. If this is an injury, how does he recover so quickly and without treatment?
I am having trouble with the blood tests because my son is fearful of needles and refuses to get it done. What can I do? He is 5 feet 10 inches tall and 175 lbs. There is no forcing him. My blood work is completely normal anyway except for anti-CCP. This doc didn't order that test, even when I asked for it (I think she doesn't know what it is) I will take the requisition to me rheumy and check it out there.

Any thoughts?
I appreciate anyone with experience with this
Carol < id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall;" id="jsProxy" ="">Hi, Carol! Welcome to the group! What you are describing sounds a lot like palindromic rheumatism, with the way it comes and goes. I'm not sure of what joints it affects, but we have several members here who are diagnosed with PR that should be able to provide some insight for ya. Your doctor doesn't seem to be too concerned about your son's symptoms, but I can totally tell you are. Maybe it's time for a second opinion (for both of you)?

I know I am concerned, but afraid as well. I know what it feels like to have arthritis every day and I hate the meds I take. They are messing me up!!
I have plans to take my son to a physiotherapist (someone I really trust) next week and see what his thoughts are.
The doc we saw is not our usual doctor, and with H1N1 in our community, it's almost impossible to get in right now. I think there's not a huge rush, but we will continue to watch this.
If anyone has experience with PR, I would love to hear about it.
Thanks!
Carol
< id="gwProxy" ="">< ="jsCall;" id="jsProxy" ="">Hi Carol
I'm so sorry you and your son are going through this! Can you go directly to a rheumatologist or do you need a referral ? I think a second opinion is definitely in order.
Good luck and let us know what happens.
LeilaSorry to hear about your son.

Definitely, a second opinion......that of a rheumatologist who will examine and order the appropriate tests.

As far as a 175 pound son refusing to get tested, remember, YOU are the mom and a simple ultimatum  [i.e., no test, no hockey] should resolve that problem.
Bear in mind that over-use and sports injuries (especially to still-growing tendons) are far more common than rheumatic illnesses in teens.  Especially when they're competitive athletes.
