I am considering asking my RD to change my NSAID.

I am having high BP and my NSAID (Daypro/Oxaprozin) can create that affect.

What do you take as your NSAID and do you like it.. and what are the bad things about it.

Thank you so much.
Hi Babs!  I couldn't  take NSAIDs pre-surgery because I had taken them so long they caused GERD and my When I was on the standard NSAIDS my RD immediately put me on Aciphex.  I would have to get off the NSAIDS about 10-14 days prior to surgery. I was miserable for those two weeks and a real misery to live with.

When Celebrex came out I switched over and fell in love with it. I don't have to take Aciphex. Also, I've had several surgeries while on Celebrex and not once have I had to discontinue it prior to surgery [whereas you must discontinue the other NSAIDS].

Downside of Celebrex:  for me it's mild edema. Also, I found that after a couple years the Celebrex seems to stop working as well. A pharmaceutical rep told me the magical secret:  get off Celebrex for a month or two, then resume it and it's like you're starting from scratch.....it works efficiently once again. I've done this for several cycles now and it works like a charm.

I swear by the Celebrex. With other NSAIDS I've had lots of stomach discomfort. Not with the Celebrex.
I took Ibuprofen for years before it quit working.  I'm taking Relafen now and find it works better for me than the Ibuprofen.  I was already on Prevacid for GERD before I started the Relafen, so I don't know if it's easier on the stomach or not.  The bottle doesn't say "take with food" so I'm guessing it isn't as bad as the Ibuprofen.  I've not had any side effects with it.

hmm...interesting points, ladies.  I really appreciate your input.

I can't take Relafen..I am 1 in 100,000,000 who develop tunnel vision on that med.....

Celebrex...  I seem to recall it having heart issues?  or am  I wrong?

I would LOVE to just take the fish oil.... love to ....  I'm going ot have to check on that.. though I will venture to guess that my RD will not be thrilled.

Is there anyone else with any ideas or experiences??

Thanks!!

Babs, there are some cardiac issues with Celebrex but for me it's been a life saver.  It really helps and does cause mild edema but it certainly helps with inflammation and pain.  Lindy

Rx-dose naproxen (5-6 OTC tablets per day in divided doses) works well for me.  I've also used meloxicam (Mobic) in the past, which worked well too.  Celebrex didn't do a damn thing for me; neither did Bextra (now off the market).  Ibuprofen sometimes gives me a few funny palpitations if I take too much for too long (2400+mg/day for more than a couple days).  Everyone reacts differently to different NSAIDs.  You may just have to go trial and error. I have salsalate 750 mg tablets I take two twice daily. I am allergic to alot NSAIDS. My RD prescribed them for me.
Also I take fishoil. Sometimes my tummy can not tollerate NSAIDS. I can tell if I skip taking them. I get some 1000 mg with lemon oil. I take two in the morning and two in the evening. It helped me ease off of the prednisone. Actually I skipped them for a day and woke up in the middel of the night in pain. Had to take pain meds and also took the fishoil when I took the pain meds because normally I do not need pain meds in the middle of the night. Just for me they work about as good as NSAIDS also good for my cholersterol.

I was just looking up anti inflamatory foods. Guess I will try some green tea. LOL That is all my son ever drinks. He just likes it. He gets the orange passionfruit and jasmine. I will have to try some different flavors and see if it helps any. LOL I will take all of the help I can get.
I have a prescription for Mobic and like it; but I don't take it all the time. Don't need it right now like I have in the past. I like to just use OTC IUB if possible. I feel like I can control the dosage better with that. I can use as little or as much as I need. Well, as much as 800mg if nessesary.....which lately, it has not been!!
I had asked about thundergod root because I read about it in an arthritis magazine, but my RD said no because it would have the same side effects as regular NSAIDs. I'm with you on trying fish oil. (I'm just not looking forward to the fish burps! hehe)
I'm currently taking Relafen, but I've tried quite a few over the years.  Some of the better ones for me have been Voltaren (Diclofenac), Clinoril (Sulindac), and Lodine (Etodalac).  Since I was already on anti-GERD meds, I can't really tell you how they affect the stomach.  But like Jas said, I think it's got to be trial and error for each person.I have to put a vote in for celebrex. I didn't think it was doing much but when I backed off of it, I experienced pain for the first time in months. Babs, I was worried about the cardiac issues too. For what it's worth, I asked my RD about this and she said that the cardiac issues are a risk with all NSAIDs but celebrex has lower risks to digestive tract and kidney functions.
