This really has me bugged. I have a order to have a mammogram and a bone density test. I planned to have it done by end of year because I have met my copays with insurance co...but now these new guidelines come out!!!

Does this mean they won't cover the test? I think I will call my insurance company again and run it by them. I wonder why the 360 on the whole early detection program...to now the "don't bother until 50 program"....who are they kidding?

Is it me or does this whole deal just smell bad?...is it $$$ motivated?
Those are GUIDELINES. And only GUIDELINES. And the Secretary of Health, Sobelius, has advised that you do as you always do.

Oncologists and other providers are going to follow the guidelines that THEIR professional group puts out......not some study done by a research group funded by the government.

It's not likely that the insurance companies will change their policies in mid year. In fact, I would think the insurance companies would do some risk and mortality studies and conclude that paying for annual mammo's, starting at age 40, is cheaper than paying for surgeries, etc., for breast cancers found too late because a mammo wasn't taken in the past two years.

I like to learn about new studies........but it's unfortunate that this one went out to the public so soon without all the caveats, etc., etc.

Sam12342009-11-18 19:31:10Takes a lot to get me outraged about edicts like this but this one has me in arms! A dear friend of mine - my son's first love - died January 2, 2009, at the age of 35, leaving two children 1 and 4. Her cancer was misdiagnosed in hear early pregnancy as a hormonal cyst. My sister is a breast cancer survivor.   I have a daughter and two daughters-in-law who I hope never miss a mammo, although they probably do not get them annually. We have proven that mammograms save lives. We have proved that mammos save money on long term treatment for breast cancer. It is beyond my comprehension that any medical study would not encourage earlier mammograms rather than later! This is one we all need to fight! So sorry to here about your friend Mary. That is really shocking. I can not believe a biopsy was not done.I agree Mary... I have many friends who are survivors today because they were mammo'd often and yearly......
I cannot believe these guidelines have even been discussed as changing....it's ridiculous!!
where are the stats of the women who have survived breast cancer by having a mammo??
I also have several friends who are under the age of 50...It would of been tragic if they had never had their mammo....I agree babs ...were are the stats of the woman who survived because of early detection?...Breast Cancer isn't some "exotic" cancer woman get, it is the most common...
