Mail order medications and recycling of cooler | Arthritis Information

Does anyone know if the coolers that your meds come in can be recycled or ideas on where to search for  recycling ideas?  I've tried googling, with little success.   I called the mailorder vendor and they don't take them back - told me since meds are shipped in them, they can't reuse them.    I can see their point a little, but don't quite believe it as the meds are pretty well sealed up.   We checked with the local historical society to see if they could use them to store items donated, no luck either.     I don't want to just toss them in the garbage, but at one cooler per month, they are piling up.

Cathycheck and see if you have a charity pharmacy or home health service that may need them. I know our local St Vincent de Paul Pharmacy can take and reuse a lot of things that commercial pharmacies can't and they have patients that can't afford a lot of items to keep their meds coolThanks for the suggestion.   I have to think that someone could use them.
My husband has been breaking them up to insulate the attic  I only get one every 3 months or so and I use them for storage around the house.  They hold my jewelry making supplies, my art supplies and now that Christmas is here - my Christmas ornaments and lights.  I've given them to friends to use for their crafts.  I always find a use for them.  Try the second hand stores and see if they can use them for storage.  Lindy
My husband has been breaking them up to insulate the attic
not a good idea styrofoam coolers are not fire resistantWhen I changed Pharmacy where my Betaseron comes from they started sending my meds in the coolers. I called and asked why, because I do not refrigerate them, I have to mix the injection before use. They really had no answer. I use to get them every month, and yes they piled up, then I went to 3 mos...the cooler got bigger!

We used one in the car last July on a trip to Florida, not a great idea, it kept food cooled but by the time we got to Florida the thing leaked all the ice...,yuk, they are def not water proof.

I throw them out now. I can not take clutter.

I think you can use styrofoam for insulation...but it needs to be done in a certain way.

stryofoam specifically made for insulation is totally different from styrofoam made for coolers.  Most importantly coolers are not fire retardant which at least in most US cities would be a major violation of the fire code
My med comes in a cooler too.... Man.  I wish mine came in a cooler. No you don't Linn. The cooler is obnoxiously large, as are the two giant ice packs that come inside it. At first you think "oh cool. I can use a couple of ice packs and a disposible cooler". But as the months go by you realize you are going to need another freezer for all those ice packs. And the coolers seem to multiply faster than rabbits. Right now my kids use them as play furniture. They even created a little "stage" for their guinea pigs. Apparently the pigs dream of becoming pop stars. Who knew?

Hey Leila - I think you need more furniture for the guinea pigs.  Can I send you my coolers?

Cathy

Leila, your story made me laugh.  :)

The pharmacy that used to deliver my meds shipped them in the perfect size box for sending packages to my sons while they were deployed.  The envelopes I get now are SO hard to open, I hate them.  Bet they could use them in an airplane in place of the black box.
I get the coolers too.  I did keep one in the garage.  In the summer, I use it to put my iced drink in while I mow my lawn.  It keeps anything from getting into the beverage and keeps it nice and cool and I don't have to go back into the house to cool down.  I was keeping the cool packs too but they do multiply like rabbits.  I kept a few, gave a few away and now they are thrown out.
