Vitamin D, depression, fatigue, calcium | Arthritis Information

Hi,

I noticed that on a few posts that problems with being 'down' and fatigue were mentioned.

Right at the onset of starting Prednisone, my Dr. also wrote out a prescription for 50,000 units of Vit D once a week. Even though my level was normal but on the low end, he stressed that being on Prednisone and taking calcium, that a high amount of Vit D would help with absorbtion of the calcium needed to maintain bone mass. It also helps with fingernail thinning and hair loss, which was also a problem for me. However, one of the main reasons was depression, especially during the dark winter months. I always had the blues during this time, but am totally opposite on Vit D.

Vit D can be toxic but only in very high doses. Even though the amount I take is high, it has only brought my levels to the midline. I would have a way to go before toxicity would be a problem.

Our bodies are so deficient in so many minerals and Vitamins these days from many chemical contacts that we have, via foods, environmental, etc.

Anyway, it's a thought for some of you who are suffering.

Just Google Vit D and fatique and see what you come up with!

Good luck,

Hopalong

hi hopalong:

How do you take the Vitamin D? Do you divide it in daily doses? My doctor recommended 800 units, daily with 1200mg of calcium.

Hi Selkie,

As I mentioned, I take 50,00 unit of Vitamin D a week. It's one pill that I take once a day; usually I pick Sundays. This was written by my MD. There is some Vit D in my Calium which I take twice a day. that's in 200 unit doses, and comes out to twice a day also, making a total of 400.

You know Citrical is dosed with vitamin D because it allows the body to absorb the calcium.  It is very good, and I take it twice a day.  It was recommended by an RD to my mom.  I have been using it ever since.
