MS, iron overloading and autoimmune | Arthritis Information

Long, long time no post, but the news is so intriguing I'd just like to share.

A dr. in Italy has found that MS may be related to constrictions in veins, and, by opening the constrictions, the symptoms disappear. He's also shown that there might be an iron overloading issue related to the whole thing. He thinks this disease has been misdiagnosed as an autoimmune disease.

The thought is mind boggling. My biologically cousin (adopted brother) has MS. My father (my adopted brother's biological uncle -- following this?) has hemocromotosis -- an iron overloading disorder for which I am a gene carrier. My brother's biological dad has diabetes. I have RA.  So one family has MS, RA, diabetes and an iron overloading disorder.

As my husband said "do you think that this could fix RA too?"  I somehow doubt that constricted veins cause RA, but I think I'll throw it out to my rheumy at my next visit.

My brother is overwhelmed with hope right now. How I truly hope that a breakthrough has been made for MS.

Thanks for listening to my musings,
- Joy

That is phenomenal about the MS. Just unplug the blocked veins.

No, I don't think this will work for RA.........but what it shows is that more and more solutions for treating diseases are being found. And with that I believe there's more hope that a "cure" for RA is not too far off.
Joy that is very interesting. I am always encouraged when new studies are being developed.
I hope your brother is doing well. Men with MS usually have a more active form of the disease. I often thought there is some key to that, I mean why do men progress faster?

My Doctor explained it to me in terms I understood, he said it was like wires running from a electrical box and the coating on the wores get stripped off in sections and cause things to run faulty. Eventually if the wore loses it's coating it breaks, causing permanent damage.

The body is a wonderful thing, it starts to repair and try to rewire it self as in  relapsing remitting MS. Eventually the scares become to numerous ans so bad that the signal can no longer get through cusing disability.

Multiple ( many) Sclerosis ( scares) = Multiple Sclerosis

I hope your brother is doing alright. I take Betaseron Injections (every other day) it is a Interferon drug, and is working for me.

What I find interesting is that I started with Hypothyroidism, got that under control with synthroid
Then started having problems vision, walking etc, got MRI and was DX with MS, got that under control.
Then I started having joint pain and swelling and recieved DX of RA...I wonder as I get this RA under control what is next?...It seems as soon as I one disease managed another stacks up. I wonder if my immune system just moves onto the next thing it can cause havoc with.
Intersting post, thanks for sharing.
