Vitamins, supplements, etc. | Arthritis Information

Hi, everyone!

I have my RD appointment next week and I've already picked up vitamin D,
fish oil and biotin at our last grocery trips.

I am waiting to start them until after I have spoken with my doc. I'm sure I'll get the green light since a lot of you guys already take them, but I also wanted to have labwork done prior to starting (like a baseline.)

I know a lot of you take OTC items in addition to the treatment of your choice and I was wondering if maybe you could tell me
A) the name of the vitamin, supplement, etc., you are taking;
B) the purpose of said item;
C) results you have seen; and
D) any side effects you may have experienced.

Hope you're having a superfantastic and extra-comfortable day!

Just started FISH OIL OMEGA 3
I take it 3 times a day

I like the Idea of the OIL...sounds soothing to my joints....lol
Oil does sound soothing! lol

Have you found a way to avoid fish burps? I remember someone said they put their capsules in the freezer. (??)
Hi Mel, besides the ones you listed I take:  Magnesium, Zinc, Calcium.  My pulmomologist and RD put me on these.  You're going in the right direction.  Everyone needs to remember not to take vitamins and minerals without talking to their doctors.  LindyAnd IF your physicians prescribes supplements, get him/her to write out an Rx for it or give you the name of a company that can be trusted.

I would NOT buy anything online or from a vitamin shop.....you have no way of knowing where they got the pills from. Don't forget, vitamin supplements bought over the counter are not FDA regulated or checked.
Lin, are they all seperate or do you take a multi-vitamin?

Sam, I knew you could get prescription vitamin D, but do they also do fish oil? (I picked up the ones above at Walmart. I thought it would be ok?)

FISH BURPS?????????????

Oh my gosh...no way...please tell  me not true

I don't know about fish oil. I don't take it so never bothered to check. I'm sure if you look at the container it will say it was packaged in the US......however, that doesn't mean it was prepared here. Very likely it was prepared in China where they have many such companies.......and who knows what they put in their stuff since they don't have to follow US regulations and have been widely reported to toss everything but the kitchen sink in the mix.

Reminder: people with low blood pressure should not take fish oils without consulting their physicians.

Make a friend of your pharmacist and ask him. In the absence of that, go catch your own fish............

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Omega 3 Fatty Acids can not be talked about enough when it comes to helping out your entire body as well as dealing  with arthritis pain. They reduce inflammation, increase blood flow as well as promote the reduction of Coronary Heart  Disease. Omega 3 (EPA and DHA) should be taken everyday even if one does not have arthritis. One should take  special note to avoid Omega 6, as there is anecdotal evidence that extra amounts can aggravate arthritis and the  average diet is saturated with Omega 6 already. Omega 3 however is generally in short supply.

Mel I take fish oil. My RD recommends it. I don't know if it helps my arthritis but it gives my skin a lovely sheen. . Naw, just kidding. I take the trader joes brand and have burped nary a fish. Not even one!

I use the enteric coated and no fish burps for me.  Magnesium is an RX.  Lindy

Howdy, Mel!  I use enteric coated fish oil (from Sam's club) and I freeze them!  This works pretty well.  Do remember that high dose for inflammation control is total Omega3 (EPA,DHA), not just total fish oil.  My pills are 1,400mg fish oil, but 900mg total Omega3, so I take 4 for 3,600mg total Omega3.  As far as side effects, the possible bleeding is the issue for me.  Find that balance with your RD, you may want to work up slowly.  I had to go off fish oil prior to my recent surgery.  But, all that said, fish oil has worked great for me.  I can't take NSAIDS, and this has been a good substitute.  Also, not only has my RD recommended fish oil, but my CD and OD (for eye health).  Jasminerain (thanks Jas! The ones I'm currently taking contain 750mg omega-3 (EPA: 500mg; DHA: 250mg)per enteric-coated gel capsule.  I take 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening.  I also pop a 2000 IU vit D each day in the winter months, and every day I try to remember to eat a couple of Rolaids (calcium + magnesium).  I take a B+C complex 2 or 3 times a week, just to cover all bases. I need to write these dosages down! :)

I found this link through Prevention magazine re: fish oil products:

Good information, CO_Mel, but I still wonder about the processing and the additives that go into this.

After that pet food contamination event from a couple years ago, I am not very trusting of anything that doesn't meet best standards.

Was really surprised to see the bad marks for Rite-Aid.
Thanks Mel!  I was glad to see the ranking on mine!
