Sore toes, how do you handle pain | Arthritis Information

This is the 1st time I've had very sore toes for an extended period.  I asked my RD about it and she she said it was active disease.  I mentioned prednisone, she said no, perhaps because I was adverse to it in the past.  She wasn't helpful.

I just started ebbrel and have been taking MTX for a while.  Do you think the enbrel could help?  I guess it could, I've read great things about it.

In the meantime, do you think this could be consudered a flare and do you have any remedies for the discomfort.

I'd really like to be able to exercise more and shop of course!

Thanks.

Also do pain and swelling equate damage?   I did present with swollen stiff hands so I have experienced a flare before.
Heat, ice, just a little clue!

Heat and Ice!...try both. Comfortable shoes.
I like to wear my fur lined Crocs if the weather is cold and regular Crocs if it is mild weather. For some reason they comfort my feet. It is just about the only time I wear them is if my feet hurt. Try to keep moving, it is hard because of pain, but for me if I keep moving it helps the pain. As soon as I sit down for a bit and get back up. I start all over.
Your Doctor should give you pain relief, If the Rheumy does not want to prescribe it, (they tend to prescribe on a short term basis) Talk to your general Practioner. My General Doc prescribes my Vicodin and my rheumy and Neurologist like this...( there is paper work involved with prescribing vicodin)...he gives me 120 ..the prescription is written for a month but it last me 2 1/2 months..
My Rheumy gave me a prescription of Prednisone to keep and fill in case I have a really bad time, like can't get out of bed. I have not used this. ( prednisone is a wonderful drug for some) I am not a fan, for completely different reasons.
I hope you get to feeling better. You are not alone, try not to over do it this holiday season.
Best wishes,
Lisa

You are more likely to get pain relief from your general practioner. I take vicoden. My toes are an issue. Also I get tendon problems as well as swelling so i take a muscle relaxer Flexeril at bed time. It helps me to be able to get my shoes on in the morning.

I also get fishoil from my general practitioner. In high doses you should always ask your doctor. I take two 1000 mg in the morning and two at night. For me it is a good anti inflamatory and does not upset my stomache. I take Natrol Omega-3 fishoil it is lemon flavored. I get it at the drug store near my house. I replaced my prednisone with fishoil and I am feelling alot better than i was on the prednisone.

You could of course take an anti inflamatory also. Sometimes I take them also if I am really bad. For me the swelling and pain have to be pretty bad for me to take them as the stomache upset bothers me.

Are you taking an RA med? You need to get the RA under control also. Your feet are important.
Thanks so much for your replies.  I also have tendon issues.

I don't think I need pain killers at this point.

In fact my main concern is exercising.  I think fresh air is really beneficial and in the winter it's hard to just sit outside.

I like to walk and it hurts, even the stationary bike hurts my toes a bit.  But I'm going to keep it up, maybe fewer days and a little shorter time.

I do take Enbrel and methotrexate.  I just took enbrel for the second time tonight so I have high hopes after reading a lot of people's experiences here.

Again, thanks for your responses.

I also have toe pain.  I was checked for a possible circulation problem but that was OK.  Neurologist wanted to check for nerve problems but since he also said he thought it was RA related, I skipped the nerve test.  Every moment, night and day, my toes are sore and stiff feeling.  Now my little toe has turned inward under the next toe.  Yesterday I had more pain, almost a blister, from walking with that toe turned sideways.  MTX has been helpful in keeping my fingers from turning, but apparently it doesn't work on toes???  Weird.

I also wear Crocs flip-fops as they seem to be the most comfortable shoe for me.  Sneakers seem too heavy and make my feet tired or swollen.

Great ideas, thanks so much.  The flip flops sound really comfortable.

I do wear Thurlow socks.  They are really thick and comfortable.  They used to be available in stores, but now they're easier to get on the internet.
Dotty, I have aching toes too. I am a nurse so I'm on my feet a lot at work. I had been wearing Danska shoes and didn't think about how long I've had them because they look so new. I got some Merrell slip ons and my feet and toes feel much better. I get Thorlow socks at TJ Maxx and Marshall's from time to time.
