Self Medication of Methotrexate | Arthritis Information

Hi i live in Greece where methotrexate is available over the counter 100 tabs 6 euros I moved from Uk a couple of years ago and was diagnosed with RA before I moved.....long story but now I have no GP so I have kept up my meds ..... yes I know I should have blood tests and I am sorting that at the moment...... I also take Folic acid but I am not sure if I am taking enough...... I take 15mg of Methotrexate with 5mg of folic but is that enough????? any Ideas would be helpful cheers........ for those in the US I guess the price is good and might be an Idea to try order over seas!!

I would never self medicate with mtx.  It has too many side effects-some that can't be felt until too late.  I'll use myself as an example.  Last lung CT I had showed fibrous areas.  This can be caused by RA or MTX.  Time will tell.

This is a lifesaving med, but it does need to be monitored.
Never, never, never self-medicate with MTX.

Don't assume that you'll know when to stop because you will start feeling badly. Not necessarily true. You may feel well but might be having lots of problems with the liver that only the liver function tests  can tell.

Get yourself on 1-2mg Folic Acid daily.
Sam12342009-12-28 15:22:08Many thanks for the feed back... I am at this time trying to sort a GP to get my LFT done but on a very small Island so it takes some time to deal with..... will keep you up to date :-)Hey just an update ........ had LFT done and all seems well  little high on GGT and ALT but not too bad.In my experience any elevation in liver functions should be investigated and sorted out by you and your physician.  There really is no "all seems well" if the liver functions are elevated, even a small amount.  Lindy
