Finally, after 15months since application and 2 years since I've been able to work, I have been officially informed that I have been approved for permanent SS Disability!!!

Oh, Cathy...I'm so very happy for you!  What a relief it must be to know this is all over with for you!!  Congratulations!! Congratulations and thank you for posting about your strategy and experiences. I dont know about california but in florida they back payed me all the way back to the day I applied for disability and actually back to the last day I worked because of the vocational counseling and other things I did to try to be retrained for a job so I got like 3 yrs worth in a lump sum and then what my kids would have collected in a lump sumback pay is determined by the date of disability as decreed by Social Security.  It is generally the last day you worked but it can vary based on other factors...The total amt they pay you will be less the 5 month waiting period.

I stopped working 9/1/06 applied for Soc Sec  the end of Sep 2007 and was approved the end of Nov 2007.  My date of disability was my last day of work so I received 10 months of back pay.

It all ultimately comes down to documentation and making sure what you are saying is backed up by your medical records.  I think mine was helped by the 7 joint replacements I have had....
Hi Cathy, this is fantastic news, well worth all of the effort, while it is very sad when we have to apply, I am sure like all of us it was a no-choice situation, I am still frustrated with not being able to work and if I ever get two good days in a row I start looking at the vacancy ads for jobs in the paper etc and get very excited about my possible remission (yeah right!), my hubby just laughs and says I admire your persistence but honestly, would you employ you?  I know that the answer to that question has to be a no unfortunately.  Anyhow, now you can use your energy which is very limited to worrying about other things and be thankful that we both have such a good welfare system to look after those of us who need it.  God Bless and gentle hugs, Janie.

I am happy for you.

Good for you.  That should help take some of the stress off of you.Congratulations on being approved.  It took me almost 3 years to get SSD.  I also wrote to my senator for help-but it was to get my money after being approved.  I was told at the hearing it would take a month to get it.  After waiting for 2 months I called Soc Sec.  They told me the decision for my case wasn't even logged into their system.  That waiting for that to be done and then the info being reviewed, sent to and having it  set up at a payment center, could possibly take anywhere from 6-9 months more before I would finally get a check. I emailed my senator, she sent me a slip granting permission to have access to my file.  I got my retroactive check in the mail 1 week after I mailed her the paperwork.  If I hadn't contacted her who knows how long I would have waited.  I would keep the addresses or phone numbers of whoever you contacted close by just in case.Congratulations on getting your SSI but isn't it sad you have to fight so hard to get something you have paid into and are entitled to?  Something is just wrong with the system.  I am so happy for you.. I hope that this will help with any financial burden and give you an easier mind set for the future......

Best to you.
Congratulations! I hope you can breath a sigh of relief now.hey congrats!!

Thats wonderful.. i have to add a note, of caution.. . be really careful of working at all, under
Disability!! No matter what "they say".. you can get punished.. i tried working for 2 months... and got a years worth of hassle for it.. and that was part time..  less then 20 hrs, a month, as a waitress!! ( this was  before i had ra.. i got disability for bipolar)..

Anyway congrats, but if you work at all, try for it to be under the table.. and yes back pay is nice.. but also remember you're only allowed to have "2,000.

sigh, i should pm you, lol.. be really really careful of how much you keep in your bank acct.
Get CASH..  any and i mean ANY extra money or checks from friends, etc... can screw you up.. i'm just saying be careful.. thats all.. You need this money and deserve it :)
Just know the govt does not play fair!
the cash rule is for SSI not SSDI...SSI is income based SSDI is employment based.  There is no limit to how much in assets you may have for SSDI.  You are allowed to work under SSDI but may only earn up to 0 per month. Anything over that is considered substantial workhi buckeye, yep
"supposedly " you can earn up to a certain amt..... but .. they WILL find a way , to take it away from you.. thats just in my own experience.. and having dealt w/ the beaurcrazys, for over 10 yrs!!

I know what they say.. and what the reality has been like... shrug
I would just hate , for someone to have gone thru, what I have w/ them and all their unbelievable rules and things, they do Not tell you!!

i rather say , to someone , be really really careful.. instead of seeing them get hurt..and losing money, they can't afford to lose, bc of some arcane rule, that no one mentioned to you.

Also, start checking to see if you can get housing, sec 8,  help for bills, theres a lot of help.. for the disabled and a lot of rules!!  Its a game.. .. working .. imo.. isn't worth the loss..
and i can't work now, anyway..  what i'm trying to say, lol, is i'm trying to help!
