Not bragging, just saying........... | Arthritis Information

So anyway,

I have just gotten to the point of walking three miles at one time. I would like to do that every day but it all depends on many things. How I feel. Am I tired or full of energy. Am I sore in one or more places and so much depends on the weather. If the wind is blowing hard, it takes my breath away when walking into it and I find myself having to stop, put my back to the wind and spend 30 seconds or so just catching my breath. So............., somedays I walk one mile and some two miles and some now, I actually walk three miles, and some days, I don't walk. When I do walk, I carry an assortment of unshelled nuts to feed to the begging squirrels. They know me now and are quick to come and sit on their hind legs and beg. One more thing. I can't believe how long it is taking to get rid of my spare tire looking belly fat. Anyway, I'm certainly not bragging, maybe trying to give encouragement to those thinking of gitting up and gitting going. I remember that some time ago, Phatgirl started an excersize thread for all of us. I looked for it but couldn't find it. Maybe Phatgirl can bring it back up. Anyway, I am hoping to continue, but as always with our disease, nothing in the future can be depended on.

levlarry2010-01-26 09:34:53Went on one of those longer walks just yesterday with my daughter and grandson.
The pace was faster than I am comfortable with and was fair nackered at the end of it all.

The bakers cysts on the back of both knees gave the most grief.  Bodak and All,

Fortunately, my bakers cysts have gone down considerably, whether because of the rituxan or some other reason, the pain isn't as bad. The cysts are still quite large, maybe the size of golf balls but, the tissue and the tendons and the ligaments have all been so stretched out, the pain is quite lessened from when they were painfully stretching them all out. Unfortunately, the cysts have stretched the ligaments and tendons so much larger, that they now do not hold my knee in place very well, rather, I must be careful not to let the knee seperate. I can easily hold my right foot steady on the ground and turn the lower leg inwards and seperate the knee to an extent. My right leg cysts used to get so large that it would explode, sending the synovial fluid down my leg between the tissue all the way to my ankle. It would cause a very burning feeling down my leg and make my right leg look as if it had elephantitis. After a few days, the burning pain would subside and i would have some relief for a time until the cyst would completey refill itself to the bursting point. Fortunately, that hasn't happened for quite some time and i certainly don't miss it. I meant to take some pictures of my cysts when i posted my last ra pictures but forgot, maybe in the near future I will to show those with out the cysts, the joy they are missing.

Three miles?! GO, LEV! GO!! You are rockin'!
I'm glad you were able to make it out with the grandkids, Stephen.

Whoa, I'm impressed and slightly jealous!!  I'm having my hip bursitis injected in 10 days and I can't wait.  You know it's pretty sad when you look forward to having long needles injected into your hips.  I'm hoping that I can start walking once the pain is eliminated from those 2 little puppies.  Good work, Lev and Stephen.  LindyGreat job! I love to walk but not in this cold weather. I do shorter walks lately. Well done Lev and Stephen!

I know what you mean Lindy. I get so excited about having my shoulders injected, you'd think it was my birthday!Good job, Lev...you too Stephen.
I get in some form of exercise every day no matter how I feel.  I just feel better when I do and I seem to have more pain when I don't. I always enjoy walking outside, but lately have not.  Maybe when it warms up a bit.
Keep up the good work, guys!
For those of you who enjoy walking when you can, there is a solution for those foul weather days - indoor walking programs!  Your library may have some to try out.  Leslie Sansone has a ton of walking DVDs.  My personal favorite is the Weight Watchers Walking Kit by Ellen Barrett, it includes a home walking DVD and a CD for when you go outdoors.

Most of these are low impact, gentle but still get the blood flowing.
Awesome Lev and Stephen!  I just found out that I have asthma, so I am laying low for a while until I find out what I can or cannot do.  Oh well........... Thank yous all for your encouragement and kudos. I certainly hope to keep on "rockin" so I don't end up "rockin' chairin". I also have a solution to most of the foul weather days. Long johns and thermals. Some times by my second mile, I'm actually getting a little sweaty. The city keeps the walking path cleared and salted. I do however have to buy a face mask. I got rid of mine when I quit robbing conveneince stores. Just kidding. Don't call the police. And yes Kel, me too, I feel much better when i exercise and actually sleep better. Also it's a fact that using our bones and muscles actually helps to grow strong bones. It is a little spooky listening to yous that are so looking forward to your next injections. Strange what pain turns us into. So many of you members keep me humble. I realize that I am so lucky compared to so many of you and truly I feel for your pain and struggles. Yous are the reasons that i very seldom complain and i wanted to be sure that you all understand that no, I am not bragging, just very thankful.

I've got to exercise 7 days a week. For me it's limited to walking, but during really bad weather I get on the recumbent bike. I feel lousy when I don't exercise. Gotta' keep those joints working!

Good for you!  Before the jaw really started giving me grief, I was doing jazzercise 3x a week.  I modified it, but it was still great exercise.  My friend was the instructor so I had to go...otherwise she would call and harass me and threaten to pick me up the next time!

Right now, I have been told not to do anything.  You don't hear that much.  There is so much inflammation that if I move fast or turn to fast I the whole room spins.  Not the safest situation.  I am hoping that one positive of taking the month off from work will be less inflammation.  I miss breaking a sweat!

Exercise is so important and it is good to hear that so many are trying to exercise as much as possible.
YAY, Guys!! That's great!!

I try to do 15-20 0n the treadmill every day. and some days I don't.

I use to walk 3 miles in 40-45 minutes every day.. and I hope some day to be able to accomplish that once again.. it is a goal of mine.

Keep up the good work..and as was said... you are inspirational.
I'm obsessive about walking...3 times a day (twice with Joey...once at work) and I practice yoga.  It really does make me feel better, less stiffness and pain.  I keep my walks to the same duration and vary the speed depending on how I feel.  Lately I feel great.  Orencia is really working well for me.

Good job on the walking. I use to walk 4 miles a day. Then I got plantar fasciitis and a morton's neuroma which sidelined me for 3 years. I put on weight and I felt depressed and sorry for myself so, despite the pain I've started walking again 15 -30 minutes a day and 30 minutes on the elliptical and when the weather gets better I'll be bike riding again for an hour a day. My mood is so much better because I'm doing something for myself. I'm determined to keep moving in some way, God willing, no matter what.Wow, thats really good Stephen and Lev!  Maybe I will get on the banwaggon and try to get some walking in too!  I have "heard" exercise does make you feel better with RA, but just keep comming up with excuses why I cant fit it in!  Hey Lev, if you miss walking one day those poor little squirrels will miss their daily meal..then what will they do!?Klynn,

Funny you should mention the squirrels. Yesterday I went for my walk. I checked the temperature and it said 25 degrees. Okay, I can live with that. I remembered that i had bought some vanilla outside/chocolate inside oreos and couldn't stand the taste so I thought, okay, maybe the squirrels will eat them. So, I put a big plastic baggie in a coat pocket and unshelled nuts in another coat pocket. The squirrels have gotten to know my car and so soon as i get out, I have about three squirrels. I pull out the oreos and toss each one of them one and they grab them and start chomping away. Weird. The squirrels are kind of terroatorial, so that they each keep in certain areas of the park. So, the wind is blowwwwwing and I've got my knitted hat on and my hoodie and my coat over that and so my vision is kinda limited. I hear this squirrel noise and look and there is about five squirrels behind me. I stop and feed them oreos. They take them and just stay on their haunches and chomp away. At that moment i thought wow, what if one day i forget to bring the squirrels nuts or oreaos. I could imagine being killed in the park by a bunch of angry squirrels. Gave me the chills. Oh, and i only walked one mile. My nose froze, seriously, froze. I was afraid to rub it, afraid it would break off. The wind was 15-25 mph and the wind chill was like zero. Think about it. A bunch of angry squirrels. Have you ever seen their front teeth and sharp claws? It would probably be hours before anyone found me on a cold day.

Good post Lev

Just started walking again this week.  I did a mile on Monday and Wednesday.  I have to go slow and be careful not to overtax my hip, but exercise definately makes me feel better....Powerful even This is too funny! I could totally see this in a movie.  Lev, You must have names for your squirrels by now and know which ones to watch closely? LOL!Gosh Waddie,

I walk a mile in 20 minutes. I guess that's pretty slow. Three miles an hour. And Klynn, yep, I do keep a close eye on that "gang" of five. I'm pretty sure I caught them flashing gang signs. The leader is a very large male. They are like park "thugs". I went so far as to put a package of oreos in my car just to be safe, in case I forget to bring some with me. Snow, I don't think I will be hurdling anything for quite some time. I certainly wish that for the future but probably not likely. Miles, I know what you mean about gaining weight. I hate looking in the mirror. This is the first time in my life I've ever had an ounce of fat. Prior to this disease, I weighed about ten pounds more than I do now and was 3 inches smaller in my waist. When I see mysef in the mirror, I automatically pull my belly in the best i can. Wow Lynne, you are already walking this soon after your surgery? That's impressive. Anyway, I'll keep you posted on the squirrels. If you quit hearing from me, tell the authorities that it's probably the big male squirrel with a part of his left ear missing that's responsible.
