me and old meds- compulsive or brainwashed? | Arthritis Information

Ok, so I just told my DH that I asked you all about how you dispose old meds. He was happy to hear I said I don't flush them or toss them in regular trash. But theeeeen, he got all up about me throwing our meds away... that it's a ploy of the drug companies to get us to pay them for new ones, that if we were in a poor country, wouldn't we want them....  I told him I feel like I'm compromising, that I only get rid of them if over 1+1/2 year past expiration date. Also, when my dad died, I couldn't find anyplace -at all- who would take his morphine... not even a charity for poor countries! I don't know how to donate meds!

Those are actually 2 separate issues:
--the safety of keeping drugs past expiration(and how long past) and
--how to get meds to the needy who would value them at only partial efficiency.

Then, I already posted the topic about how to environmentally dispose of meds, if I need to because there's no choice.

Is my annual med checking compulsive and unnecessary? I thought I was being careful and considerate.

Snow,  thanks!
That was very useful!  I think I'll revise my plan and keep my meds longer than 18mo-2yrs and not worry about it so much.

I'll also read that website about how to donate drugs.
You are very good at Googling!
Ask your family doc re disposal of drugs. Mine physician once took my husband's drugs to distribute to poor patients (quite illegal in all likelihood) but many doctor's offices WILL dispose of old 'scripts in a safe way that is also friendly to the planet.
