Med Relief -How Soon? | Arthritis Information

Hello again.   I  posted a question to you a little while ago and got lots of helpful replies so thank you and once again, this is a great site. Probably more helpful than doctor's advice!! (from a personal experience anyway).  Another question, I was at the doctor's office yesterday, my own G.P., and when we discussed Plaquinel/Meth, which I will be taking (I am already on Plaquinel,(about three weeks), she intimated that they take a long time for them to offer relief so to speak.   I would like to know if anybody can remember, or knows how long they felt they were waiting for the meds to kick-in?   I live in Canada, any Canadians on this site???   It would be nice to check up on things from a Canadian perspective, i.e cost of meds/insurance etc.     Thanks again, I am away for a week so will check up on any replies on my return.

Hi Gillian,

When I was on meds before, I remember the doctor saying that it could take a couple of months for them to start working.  But I think it's different for each individual.  Some take less time, and some more.  Usually, if there's no improvement after about two months, they'll try something different.  At least that was my experience.

Cris

Plaqu. is a 6month build up.  I started it about 6 months ago and notice some relief with in a month or so but you do not get the full impact for about 6months from what my Dr. told me when I started it.  MTX is a 3month build up if I remember right.  Again you will see relief before the 3 months but you get the full impact of it at that point.

Like Cris said everyone is different as to how quickly you get relief from the drug and if you don't notice any improvement after a certain time I am sure your Dr. will look at something else.

Hope that helps a little.

I agree. It takes a while...just when you feel like you're ready to give up on it; it starts to work!! MTX took a while for me and so did Humira. I've been on MTX and Humira now for six months and I've just with in the last month started to think I like it and I'll stick with it.

Cris is right though; if they don't see some improvement with in a couple months they'll either switch you or increase your dosage. I slowly increased my MTX for more than two years before they finally decided it wasn't working well enough alone. It's all a process. A long one at that!!

Everyones different; but no doubt it's going to take some time.

Good Luck!!

Hi Gillian,

I've been on both those meds for over ten years now.  I found it took about 6-8 weeks to feel them starting to work.

I live in Ontario...nice to see another Canadian

Kelly
