Sleep study and exhaustion | Arthritis Information

All I can say is DOH !  I was told I never go into a deep sleep and that I am in pain all night long.  It was interesting that they can actually can detect pain in your brain waves.  I thought I got a halfway decent night sleep but they said I am sleep deprived.  AGAIN - DOH Wow Roxy, this opens up a whole new can of worms for all of us!   It makes so much sense that it is scary!  Why don't our rheumy's tell us this?  Should we all be on pain killers and sleeping pills?  I am anxious to hear others replies to this.  Thanks Roxy...And I am sorry for all of us with this GD disease.

Luv, Justme

WOW! WOW! SO that is why!!!!!!!!!!Get this ..... I was considering posing somethig similar to the board here about such a thing.

I got to thinking the other day when I was flat on my back in a severe number 10 pain index flare,  lethargying all over the place. ( is that a word? If not let's make it one!).

When we are in so much pain and in the deep lethargic mode in a flare, is there an enzyme that produces this feeling? Now with Roxy's dx on the sleep study that in fact her brain  displays pain, could there be a chemical exchange ?( must be, obviously because it shows up)

Annnd could this be causing this lethargy? We all know about the chemical messengers for pain ....right? so it would only make sense especially with the sleep study reveal.

(Can you tell my main area of focus in college was Neurology or what?) lol. THis is truly phenominal to  me.

Consider this, when we are in a deep sleep our body self paralyzes ( a chemical released by the brain..I am thinking it is an enzyme but would have to check my notes on that)so that we do not walk ect. all over the place. It is a very complex set of phenomina that takes place when a person falls asleep and remains asleep, and all the sleep stages and all. SO it makes sennse to me that maybe if we are not getting  a restful sleep ( which ...sorry folks, compounds the problem of pain and especially fibro)then perhaps there is a neural chemical in our brains that is more abundant or missing??????????? Any ideas?

Thanks for the input Roxy!!!!! When will you know more info?

This is why I take something to help me sleep every night.

What did they suggest you do Roxy?

No suggestions yet.  The results have to be "interpreted by a specialist" and my gp will give me the results next week.  It was also interesting that they said I stopped breathing TWICE.  Then they said that it was not that unusual Wow, that is so interesting.  Surely tell us what the specialist interprets.  I would love to hear about it. Hmmm the stopped breathing thing is a bit worrisome, would be for me anyway......I am anxious to hear your results......I hope they have a solution for you. Kind of scary huh?

My husband was in the hospital a few years ago and was hooked up to a pulse oximeter (the little thing that goes on your finger and measures your oxygen level). He fell asleep and every few minutes his O2 would drop and the alarm would beep. The noise would cause him to awaken just slightly and his level would go back up. As a result, he had a sleep study done and was dx'd with sleep apnea.  The treatment is a machine that helps you breathe at night. He hasnt gone and taken care of it---dont get me started on that one! But I know other people who have it and say that their lives improved dramatically once they got on the machine because they were finally getting rest at night.

About your pain during the night...I couldnt believe my eyes when I read that. Get this, just last night I had this awful dream that I was stiff and crumpled and in pain. I was alone in the house and could not open my medicine bottles. In my dream, the only bottle I could open was my Flexeril (mild muscle relaxer) and I just dumped about 4 or 5 in my mouth. I remember thinking that I wasnt behaving rationally, but I was in so much pain I didnt know what else to do.  It was a really bad dream and it woke me up. My body, as usual, was stiff and sore. My right hand was really killing me. It has been pretty bad all day. I know I was hurting and it affected my  dream. For the past 3 nights I have bad dreams that woke me up. In one I was getting radiation therapy for cancer (really bad!) and the other was about my sons dead fish coming back to life, getting really big, and swimming around by my feet (funny and stupid now, bizzare and scarey at the time!).  I think I am having these bad dreams b/c of pain at night. I had to cut back on the NSAIDS since I was getting some gastric reflux and I am weaning  Prednisone right now too so pain level has been higher last couple of days.

Well...so when we say we are tired all of the time, we can honostly mean it...we are tired ALL of the time even while we are sleeping!

So True Crunchy.  I haven't been having dreams because I have not been getting to that "dream state".  I would rather that than a slimey swimming dead fish at my feet

I am concerned they are going to put me on more painkillers.  I have also been taking less and less of them.  I am so tired of feeling so stupid all the time.  They really numb my brain !  So far, I have only taken Soma (muscle relaxer) to sleep.  It helps me go to sleep but it does nothing for the joint pain.  I was talking to my husband and I am going to try acupuncture.  I am sick of all these drugs and so many people swear by acupuncture.

This last couple weeks have been very hard because I am determined to wean off the pred. and we have had storm after storm and mtx really messed me up so I am not on any NSAID.  In fact, I am only on Enbrel.

The technician said they might recommend sleep apnea machine for me but she also said it would be difficult because I move around so much in my sleep

Did you guys see the story on Ambien - the sleeping pill.  I think it was in California but 150 people this year alone in serious accidents had Ambien in their blood.  The technician at the hospital who obviously works nights used to take it and one time she got a call, had to pick her kid up from school and I guess she scared the heck out of her mom and kid the way she was driving.  Then she went back to bed and didn't remember any of it

Who knows, what to do, what to do.  I know lately I have felt weaker than I ever have.  It is because I have laid around A LOT.  Now I have a really hard time getting off the couch or out of bed or for that matter, out of the car.  Today I am getting the yoga schedule at the gym and force myself to go to the "gentle" yoga classes.  This is not good.  I truly feel like an old lady Roxy, I saw the report on Ambien and it's scary. When I was working, it was the swing shift or graveyard and there was times when I had to do doubles then drive home in a half asleep state. I couldn't remember the drive home.
I do belive what we do feel pain in our brain when we sleep as I will be in a deep sleep and start dreaming about being in pain only to wake up in very bad hip pain.
Roxy, hang in there and if we lived close by, I would pop in to make sure that you were okay when hubby wasn't around.
   Take care,
MarisaHey Roxy, what problems were you having on the MTX? Was it the pill or injection?
