Joint injections | Arthritis Information

Hi I am new to the forum but in need of some quick advice>

my daughter age 13 received 8 joint injections(knees, ankles, thumbs, big toes) on 3/7(tues) and is still having severe pain at the injection sights and is running a low grade fever.  Her doctor said she should be up nd around feling much better in 24-48 hours but that is not the case.  Has anyone else had a reaction such as this and should I be concerned abuot this? Thank-you

My heart breaks for you that your daughter has to go through this.  From what I have read on the boards, the injections are effective for some and some they are not.  Low grade fever is common with RA.  I would suggest calling your doctor since he told you she would be better and say "What's up with this?"  Welcome to the board and I hope your daughter feels better soon.  She must be very brave.

No good advise here....but welcome.

Really can't believe any dr would give 8 injections in one day.  I was told to wait a week between shoulders, and the ones in the hand are really horrible.  Isn't there another dr. you could try?

OMG, what an ordeal for your child.  I agree, you need to call the doc and say what's up with that.  Additionally I also agree about the number of injections all at once.  You child is very brave and you should be proud.  My heart goes out to you, this must be very difficult for you.   Fevers do  go with RA but one must be careful not to assume the fever is from RA and not from another source.  If she is immuno-compromised from taking RA drugs, this could be a real concern so I would most certainly follow up on that.

Perhaps another doctor might be in order here.  Obviously her symptoms are uncontrolled.  One who specializes in Juvenile Arthritis?   I'm a little different, and I hope your daughter is like me. I had 3
injections on Monday, and was begging for more. The local injections do
the most for me. I can never get the doctor to inject everything at once,
so I never feel right. They really work (and yes, they do hurt, and I turn
purple and green). She says, I can't just inject every joint. But the general
injection & the pills don't work as well. I'd rather have a little bit of short
term misery to get a week of relief to be able to walk & type & play the
piano all at once. She is a brave girl, but you're doing it to help her, just
remember that.

THank- you all for your advice.  Her doctor is a pediatric rhuemy at Duke University.  She is also on naproxen, methotrexate, folic acid, amytriptalene, and previcid.  I was worried that she may have infection from the injections.  She is very brave and hopefully will eventually get relief from this ordeal. From what you are telling me all I can say is Thank God they put her to sleep for this.

Cindy

They put her to sleep? I've never heard of that....but then I've never heard of that many in one day; so I guess that would make sense.

You're right about her getting an infection. Just keep a close eye on her. Do't let it go on too long without further investigation.

How longs it been since she was dignosised?

Hope today she'll begin feeling some relief.

We have been chasing a diagnoses for many years.  I think she has been symptomatic since she was five years old.  Hospitalized at age five with "unknown or possibly mono" and again in fourth grade "unknown possibly chronic fatigue/fibromyagia".  Now I know that these were just flares of the jra.  Her ped rhuemy agrees with the fibromyalgia and chronic fastigue but now has diagnosed her with poly jra also.  I am sure all of this sounds very familiar to all of you.  I am so glad I found this forum.

Cindy

We're glad you're here Cindy. We have several here that have grown up with JRA and several others that also have children with JRA. You'll be in good company.

God bless, Cindy,  but it's so good to know that a mother is so caring as to search for aplace to find help, understanding and caring from others who know as much as possible what she's going thru.  She's my granddaughter's age and it kills me to read what she's going through.  You might have her check out the forum too, it might be a great  help to her to read and know answers to things she might not have understood about whats going on with herself.

My heart goes out to your daughter.  I hope she gets some relief, and you too.  You have to be so strong to deal with this. I wish you well, and am glad you found this place.  It is such a great place with good people.

I was going through similar things at 13 too, frequently being put out to have joint injections all over, it's really tough and I'm sorry she is going through it.  Are the doctors happy with the drugs she is taking? It doesn't sound like the condition is under control at all - I was having joiunt injections every 4 weeks until the age of 19 when I finally found a drug that worked well enough to avoid them.

I hope she is feeling better today, if not you should contact her rd sometime this week. I remember a few times I had some sort of reaction to the injections (something to do with gout/crystals?) which led to pain and low grade fever.

Say hello to your daughter from me, I hope her pain passes;

best wishes to you both,

Moonie x

Hi and welcome. If she is not better today I would recommend calling your doctor. Anytime anything invasive is done and fever follows, it is worth checking out. Esp when it comes to kids. I hope she is better though. I am so sorry to hear that your family is dealing with this. Good luck to all of you!
