helicobactor pylori | Arthritis Information

Hi guys, I have had lots of tests just annual checks mainly, I have severe anaemia and regular iron infusions as I am not absorbing it.  Endoscopy showed helicobactor pylori, but it can't be treated successfully as I am allergic to penicillin, erythromycin and Klacid, there are no others that are successful and I have lots of little holes losing blood, GP is afraid they will get bigger as it has been untreated for 2.5 years, we have tried treatment with just the other 2 meds and natural herbal remedies before but nothing worked, her hubby is gastroenterologist and he said try without the penicillins but we have done that, they have told me to standby while they work something out - any ideas appreciated???????  Regards Janie. Janie,

I have no ideas, but I want to offer my support and I will say a prayer for you.

Thanks Lisa, just wanted to say how lovely your photo is, you and your grandson are very photogenic, he is gorgeous. Cheers from JanieJanie. I'm sorry you are having to deal with this. Try to get this corrected as it does increase your risk of gastric cancer. I know we treat it here with Biaxin and PPI's.

History of GSE
The grapefruit is a sub-tropical citris tree grown for its fruit which was originally named the “forbidden fruit” of Barbados. The fruit was first documented in 1750 by Rev. Griffith Hughes describing specimens from Barbados. All parts of the fruit have uses. The fruit is mainly consumed for a tangy juice. The peel is expressed into an aromatherapy oil and is also a source of dietary fiber. The seed and pulp as a by-product of the juice industry is sold as cattle feed and is manufactured for use to make an extract. Discovered in 1972 by Dr. Jacob Harish, a physicist, GSE has been used all over the world for the better health of people, plants and animals. Grapefruit seed extract is used as an antibiotic, antiseptic, disinfectant, and as a preservative in food and cosmetics. GSE is also non-toxic, environmentally safe, and quickly bio-degradable. It causes no side effects and is often dramatically less expensive than existing treatments or chemicals for similiar applications, whether human, animal, or agricultural in scope.

About Grapefruit Seed Extract
In the years since its discovery, grapefruit seed extract has been tested and validated by the FDA, USDA, the Pasteur Institute in France, and numerous physicians. The active ingredient of grapefruit seed extract is non-toxic and is synthesized from the seed and pulp of certified organically grown grapefruit.It is available as a concentrated liquid from several different manufacturers, and it comes in different size bottles at most health food stores. It is manufactured using a bio-technical process that isolates all the natural protective elements from the seeds and pulp of the fruit Citrus Paradisi, which is commonly known as grapefruit. The process converts the grapefruit bioflavonoids (polyphenolics) into an extremely potent compound that has been shown to be effective in treating hundreds of different organisms including: Shigella, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Giardia lamblia, Diplococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycobacterium species, Campylobacter, candida albicans, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Proteus, Cholera, Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Legionella pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, Herpes1, Influenza A2, and measles virus. It has been know to help with osteoporosis. GSE has been shown to kill both gram-negative and gram-positive strains of bacteria

GSE has been proven in laboratory tests to be 10 to 100 times more effective as a disinfectant than chlorine, colloidal silver, and iodine. The United States Department of Agriculture tested GSE and found it effective against four animal viruses: Foot and Mouth Disease, African Swine fever, Swine Vesicular Disease, and Avian influenza.

GSE contains phenolic compounds, bioflavonoids, amino acids, fatty acids, tocopherols, saccarides, ascorbic acid and dehydroascorbic acids. The phenolic compounds are unstable but are chemically converted into more stable substances that belong to a diverse class of products called quaternary ammonium compounds. Standardized GSE has the chemical name diphenol hydroxybenzene and is used by prescription in Germany. The chemical structure of the compounds produced by GSE is not fully documented; so much more investigation of GSE is needed in this area.

Different products may vary in strength so you should follow the label or your doctor’s directions for any particular product. As concentrated solutions, they almost always require dilution, and a different dilution for different forms of application. Its bitter taste may be avoided by mixing it with carrot, vegetable, orange or grapefruit juice, or by taking it in capsule form usually just after a meal

GSE liquid is available in tablets, capsules, powdered concentrate, spray, and ointment. There also is an insect repellent made of it.

 I have no helpful info but waht to wish you the best in finding a solution.

Hoping for a good outcome. Back in the day they gave my Dad Mylanta for bleeding ulcers. He nearly died had to have blood tranfusions. Well they told him not to take asprin. I realize you have to take your pred. So that may make it difficult.

Seriously that is how they used to treat ulcers years ago. They did not know of the causes and they had no fancy meds. So I have a great respect for Mylanta and keep it in my cubbard.
Hmm, not good Janie...
I have no experience with this so cannot offer any real advice, but to say I wish you well.

Lev, Never knew about the benefits of grapefruit other than I never liked the fruit.
A Gp told me to drink grapefriut juice for thrush years ago.Hi Janie, I am so sorry!  Both Lev and Snow gave excellent advice, may be worth a try.  I will keep you in my heart and hummmmm loud enough for you to hear me down under!  I wish I could offer more...   I am so sorry that you are feeling so rotten.  I don't have any experience with the problem, but it sounds miserable.

Please let us know how you are doing.
Ouch, that hurts... I know.
Back in the 1970s-mid 80s when I was having so much GI trouble like that (many endoscopies-learned to ask for heavier sedation), I had a gastroenterologist who was way ahead of his time... quite brilliant.  He told me it wasn't caused by my mind, that he was positive that someday they were going to discover a bacteria was the culprit of most stomach ulcers and treatment would be a specific antibiotic. I bet when that happened, after he had retired, he was thinking "I told you so" to all those docs who thought he was crazy.  He made me feel better that it wasn't my fault, something about my personality or that stress caused it.  Of course everyone knows that stress can make many illnesses worse, anti-inflammatories especially like Prednisone can cause trouble, but for the vast majority, we can blame a bug.

---Grapefruit caused pain so I wouldn't have been able to take that.
---Oral Prednisone needs to be taken with food for this reason. Is there an injectable steroid you could be given instead of Prednisone?
---I have no idea about your unfortunate antibiotics allergies... what a challenge.
---Eat small meals and frequent. Pay attention what hurts and avoid that.
---I had to stop coffee and switch to herbal tea. I still carry one in my purse... I can always get hot water and have my tea when others are drinking coffee or alcohol.
---I still have Tagamet (cimetidine) on hand and thank God that it and Imodium were invented and finally made available OTC (I double the dose so closer to my previous Rx).
---Keep your MD informed... this is serious. I hope you have a Gastroenterologist.

Having GI pain and difficulties on top of RA pain and challenges is the pits.  Just don't go getting colon issues with fierce diarrhea too... you'll really be stuck at home.
I'm so sorry you're in my club.... a club nobody wants to join.

Thankyou everyone for your advice and concern.  I am not too worried as I get fed up with worrying about all the co-morbidities I have, the GP did say that there must be little holes everywhere as the amount of blood loss is concerning and HP causes this and stomach cancer in some cases so she will endeavour to find something to help in due course, we hope.  I will do my best to take on all your advice though.  Cathy, my GP is wonderful and her hubby is my gastroenterologist and he doesn't charge me any excesses just accepts medicare and health fund which is a blessing and he fits me in for the infusions whenever I need them, he doesn't usually perform them but does it to save me travelling 2 - 3 hours for it otherwise, I am extremely lucky.  I do get bad tummies, sometimes needing to stay in the toilet for approx 3 hours on and off, usually from MTX, this has slowed down though as I had to reduce the dose again due to unwanted side effects.  Thanks again, especially Cathy for such a long, caring, informative reply.  Janie.XXJanie I have the abx allergies that you do. Some meds are worse than others. A med simalar to clarithramyacin is clidamyacin. When I get knee surgery they give me a dose by IV and I usually can tolerate that. It takes me up to day eight with biaxin to get a rash. I understand that is just me. For some reason I seem to tolarate the clidamyicin when I can not take zithramycin or erythramyacin or any of the other myacins. Tetracycline makes my skin peel off and is really a bad reaction as is penicillin and sulfa. So if you have not tried clidamyicin you may want to ask if it may be helpful? I also took it for an abcess tooth a few years back. It can have bad side effects for some people and cause a gut infection for some. I have been lucky and not had that problem but my brother got that infection trying to get rid of H-pylori and then had to get rid of the secondary infection caused by the abx. I wish the best of luck and will keep you in my prayers.Hi Milly, I will check on that one thanks.  I get blistery sores on the throat and roof of my mouth on the 2nd day.  Quite scary!  Janie.  So sorry you are suffering with this on top of everything else. One of my clients had it but she was successfully treated and feels so much better. Best of luck to you in finding a resolution.Janie.... it sounds like you have diarrhea issues too. I have a great suggestion for you;
take your MTX by injection!

Before Plaquenil stopped working, I lost 30lbs from the extreme diarrhea during the year I took it. So when she started me on Mtx, my RD ordered it to be subcutaneous injection, once a week. Result is I am like I was before the Plaquenil.... bad, painful, hours long, diarrhea 2-4x/week but not so bad I can't keep a calorie in.

Don't worry;
-tiny needle like for insulin, goes just under the skin, doesn't hurt  ....easy peasy.

Cathy
Guess what Cathy, I already am!  I kow, I am hopeless!  I switched about 2 years ago and the diarrheoa has improved definitely so good advice, thanks again, Janie.
