Running/jogging | Arthritis Information

Hi!

I am curious if there is anybody with RA who is able to run or jog on a regular basis, iregular basis or just any basis

If you are can you tell me a little about your running/jogging and your RA?

Thank you!
are you joking?Nah........ not since I had surgery for my deteriorated knee cap...... the jolt just kills me.

I can walk...... ;)
I don't think it's completely out of the question... in theory. My RD has a patient that is doing so well on humera that he has come out of retirement as a competitive rower. I was an avid runner before RA, but too much damage has been done to return to it. I hope that is not the case for you.

Babs! My kneecap is completely jacked as well. What kind of surgery did you have? Has it worked well?

No, I'm not joking. When discussing exercising with my RA doc he says I can do what ever I like as long as it doesn't hurt.

Now I do understand that if your RA has progressed a lot and made a lot of damage in hips, knees and feet you will not be able to run.

But I also understand that you can go into remission for example and maybe some people have been able to run or jog at that time?

I'm told by my doctor and from what I've read that exercise is very important. Of course you shouldn't overdo things but I'm curious to what levels people have been able to take it.

I read in Arthritis Today about a girl who used to be a professional runner now is a professional biker and actually won an olymic gold medal. If I remember correctly she had osteoarthritis.

Since exercise is so important I'm curious about what you do for exercising and if someone has been able to run/jog.

Initally I was pretty active when diagnosed.  I was a teenager when the ra/jra began.  But, I did play rugby and showed horses through college.  Now I am 33.  I have had this for long enough for some pretty major damage to occur.
Exercise is very important.  It is proven to improve pain and function.  It's just a matter of finding the right balance.
Keep up the exercise-it is the best thing you can do for yourself.  I have surgery next week and quite a bit of rehab to look forward too.  But, I hope to return to a higher level of activity when all is said and done.
Thanks Rebecca!

I'm newly diagnosed so this is also why I'm asking these types of questions. I am currently able to do biking, eliptical machine, yoga, walking and so. I can't run since my toes still have inflammation. I used to run a lot so I would of course like to be able to do it again. I realize that might not happen of course.
But instead of thinking "I can't run" I keep thinking "I can't run right now". It keeps my mind more positive to have that type of attitude.

Oh and I hope your surgery will go well!!![QUOTE=Sky]

[QUOTE=Sky]Hi! Hi Jasmine!

I undestand if you don't enjoy it but it is positive to hear that you could do it! Thanks for sharing!

Can't run, but I could walk a good clip. The less weight bearing exercises [in my case] the better.I have only been diagnosed for two years and I am only 23 years old... but I can still run!  I love to workout!  I know that there may be a day that I can't do it as much anymore, but for now I'm taking one day at a time, praying, and taking my meds.
I realize many people with RA aren't able to run/jog because of joint damage, but for some people, it is possible.

This is kind of cool.... One of the winners from the reality show Survivor has RA...  http://arthritis.about.com/cs/inspiration/a/tinawesson.htm

As my rheumy says... no case of RA is the same as the next.  Some people may go into remission at times, etc, etc.  Exercise is indeed important... so if you can do it, go for it!
I have 2 friends both with RA who both run...barefoot no less.  One has had multiple shoulder replacements didn't start running until she was 50 and in 2009 ran her first marathon.  She'll be running a half marathon in about a month or so.  If you go over to the about.com arthritis board and start a post with the title running she will see it and be able to give you more information

You also need to realize that generally a message board will be made up of people who are generally having a harder time.  That is why they joined a support group.  Each case of RA is different and I know that there are RAers out there exercising daily.  I was one and hope to be again.  But, I have had a really hard couple of years.  I come to the boards to find support, and offer it as well.   When things were going really well, I never even thought about joining an online group.

Very true Rebecca!   Hi Sky, do what you can while you can, I was a runner ever since I can remember and very athletic, into all sports, now can barely walk due to too much pain everywhere and fractured feet from osteoporosis due to steroids for 10 years!  Good luck.  Janie. I run regularly; I recently completed a 5 k run at Disneyworld. I am not fast, but I am improving. I can run 4-5 times a week if I listen to my body. I find that running helps my RA. At this time (3 years after diagnosis) I have not shown any bone issues at all.
I take methotrexate and folic acid. Used to take Celebrex, but got stomach issues with that.
Good luck!
