I have noticed that there is a lot about Vitamin D on the boards lately.  I recently found out that my levels are very low (9) and was wondering if anyone else had low levels and what those were.

I am taking Rx Vit D 50,000 per week and getting more sun in hopes that my levels come up.  My Dr. said that a 9 was Osteomalacia (soft bone) levels.

Thanks for your help.
Hi, Bonny,

I just went through the same exact scenario. Ironically, my TSH levels started going haywire about a year ago for no reason at all. They were well controlled for 20 years and then suddenly they were all over the map. My endo tested for Vitamin D and sunofagun, I was in bad shape like  you. So I got the Rx for 50,000IU which I took weekly. After a couple months it brought it up into the low normal. Retested and it's a bit more improved but we've decided to go with 50,000 IU every other week. I'm told the goal is to get it between 50-80.

The labs use roughly 30-100 as normal range. When I was first tested I came out with a score of 18. After a month of Vitamin D I went up to 28 and now, after more Vitamin D, I'm up to 45. So it takes a while for the body to absorb the pill.

Surprisingly my TSH levels went back into the normal range once I had enought Vitamin D under my belt. I can't find a lot of research on a connection, but I'm betting there is a direct relationship because, after all, Vitamin D is a hormone.

As far as the sunlight - am sure this helps. But I live in a warm climate and am outdoors constantly getting full sun........so I am clueless about what happens.

I'm beginning to wonder if one of the drugs I take blocks the absorption of Vitamin D. HIgh on my list of suspicion is Methotrexate and Aciphex. But I haven't had time to research.

Also, just as a reminder to everyone else: If you're thinking of taking Vitamin D supplements, do not do so without a doctor's Rx after a blood test is done. Too much Vitamin D can boost Calcium to the toxic level [which can cause cardiac anomalies].
Sam12342010-04-03 08:26:27Am glad that your D levels are going up.  Have you had any symptoms or tests showing that you have soft bones?

Thanks Sam.
I have not had any testing done [short of standard blood work and Vitamin D levels]. Come to think of it, I'm probably due for a bone density. But that's not definitive of a osteomalacia diagnosis. As I understand it, a solid diagnosis of osteomalacia can only be made with a bone biopsy.

I will say that it was amazing how much of the general body/bone/muscle ache went away after I was just a few weeks into the supplements.

Incidentally, I understand that Vitamin D injections are very painful.
